Hidden Gems #498: Monday Blues by Sunny Hill

In this series we remember songs that have been forgotten or were never even given the attention they deserved. Today's Hidden Gem is Monday Blues by Sunny Hill

I know it's not Monday but yesterday's group got me thinking about Sunny Hill who I haven't done on this series in awhile. Like I said before, no girl group could escape the sexy concept in 2014. Sunny Hill have always had unique quirky concepts. This is their most general public oriented song.This was a controversial comeback not because it was too sexy but because people thought they were selling out. They had just officially lost Janghyun, the male member who produced lots of their music, so people thought their new direction was just any other girl group. Sunny Hill still did their ballads and quirky concepts afterwards, but it was too late. And it's not fair because this is such a good song. And the song itself still has Sunny Hill vibes, it's mostly just the video that looks like other girl groups at the time. As a music person, the song production is still higher quality and more complicated than your run of the mill girl group.

This lineup of Sunny Hill stayed together until 2018 when Jubi and Misung officially left the team. They were replaced by Eunju and Geonhee. That lineup released comebacks in 2019 and 2020, just with much less of a budget. They used to be affiliated with IU's label and now they're independent. Those two new members than officially left the team, Kota and Bitna continued as a duo. Kota became a member of the project group WSG-Wannabe. The group was a massive success in Korea well-known for their incredible vocals. I think unfortunately it may have caused tensions between her and Bitna who have been groupmates since 2011. This year Eunju and Geonhee appeared out of nowhere with Bitna. They had some concerts together super recently and Bitna was saying those girls were her family. Meanwhile Kota was like "I'm hurt, why wasn't I informed about this?" Kota still hasn't been seen at Sunny Hill schedules but hasn't officially left the group. Very sad that these ladies who have been together for over a decade through multiple lineups have had a sorta falling out (allegedly). Also Bitna got married recently and just had a child, so I think it's cool a mom is an active girl group member still. Misung is a songwriter now and she does mostly B-sides for groups like UP10TION, Rocket Punch, Gfriend, and Astro but she also did Cool by Weki Meki.

Just like yesterday's entry, this is another one that hits right in the sweet spot of concepts I enjoy. First of all, who doesn't like the sexy receptionist/businesswoman look? Maybe someone, but all I know is that I absolutely love it. The shirt, skirt, and heels in classic black and white is pretty close to the top of the all-time list. The classiness of it just makes it hotter. Love the blue skirts too. And also just like the entry yesterday, it's really nice to see them showing off their confidence.

I'm not really a music person, as in I don't know anything about composition, but I can tell a lot of effort and care went into this song. I don't think it sounds like a generic girl group song in the slightest. It's very much its own thing. I can't get enough of the beat. You can hear it really well at 0:42, and I could listen to that part on repeat all day. They all sing really well, and the voice of the member with the shortest hair really stands out with its slight squeakiness.

I checked out a few other songs, and I guess I can see the point about the concept change. They have some of the most creative and impressive videos I've ever seen. Pray is honestly a masterpiece. The song itself it's so beautiful, but that video is like Oscar type stuff. It's too depressing to be a regular watch/listen for me, but bravo. The Grasshopper Song is also super interesting.

I wish fans would've supported them more, but I'm excited that there are still songs with this concept out there that I have yet to discover. And it was cool to see such creative concepts I didn't even know existed.

Also that girl with the short hair and kinda squeaky voice, that's Kota. She is the member in WSG-Wannabe and she's the main vocal. She's my bias and I think she's a super charismatic performer.

Pray is amazing isn't it? The video was based on The Elephant Man by David Lynch. The song and video for Here I am is based on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Grasshopper Song is based on the fairytale of the ant and the grasshopper. Just a super super unique group and a very talented one too, one of my favorites in all of Kpop.
