In this series we remember songs that have been forgotten or were never even given the attention they deserved. Today's Hidden Gem is Cushion by Sonamoo
Sonamoo were one of my favorite third gen groups. They're also one of my favorite groups to do the girl crush concept ever. In 2015, girl crush was essentially nonexistant. It wasn't until Blackpink debuted a year later and it got popularized. One of my favorite things about Sonamoo was their choreography. They were super good at dancing and in their practices they were very synchronized. Cushion was one of my favorite songs by them. People made fun of the lyrics but I've heard way worse. The la la la la la part is sooo catchy.
Remember how I said Sonamoo did the girl crush concept well and how it wasn't popular at the time. Well, Sonamoo wasn't gaining traction with that concept so they switched to the popular concept at the time: cute, specifically a Gfriend-esque cute concept. It's hard for a group to switch concepts from girl crush to anything else, especially cute, because it really turns off the fans; they view it as not genuine. This was definitely the case for Sonamoo, fans were confused and kinda moved on. Girl crush got popularized again so they switched back, but fans kinda moved on. After a few more comebacks, Sonamoo went on a very long hiatus. During this time Euijin promoted on The Unit and literally got first place! She was the centre during the launch of the TV show and basically held that #1 spot the whole time. Nahyun and Sumin sued their label for contract violations (TS is among the worst and if I'm not mistaken nonexistant today). They did win! The remaining 5 released an OST for a video game and disbanded silently after 7 years. Euijin is a solo artist called Hezz. Some of the members are pursuing acting or lowkey solo careers. Minjae was on a couple vocal contests: Girl Spirit and V-1. She is doing musicals. D.ana was on Idol Drama Operation Team and promoted with Girls Next Door as a part of that show. Sumin was recently in a stage production of Othello. Nahyun is acting. HighD is still trying to pursue a solo career; she debuted last year and does mostly ballads. NewSun is also pursuing a solo career while doing acting as well.
