I once wrote a very detailed answer on a Q&A-website some years ago to someone who wanted to know how KPop was made and I said for 1st gen H.O.T, Seo Taiji & Boys, S.E.S, Shinhwa. For 2nd gen I said SNSD, KARA, Big Bang, f(x), Apink and SUPER JUNIOR. For 3rd gen I said EXO, VIXX, TWICE, NU'EST, BTS, Day6 and since I made it in 2017 or so I didn't had the 4th gen yet, but if I would re-write the exact same thing, than I would use for 4th gen ATEEZ, Stray Kids and ITZY.

"Finally, There is one group that needs a thorough separate section in kpop history (with MDR in the background)" - the chills i feel everytime i hear this..

I would write about TVXQ, K.Will, Wonder Girls, Brown Eyed Girls, SNSD and S.E.S
They are all essential parts of kpop history.

Groups or soloists? Because you said groups but have BoA in your list.
If including soloists, Psy, G-Dragon, Rain and CL.
Girls Generation
H.o.t.
TXVQ
Shinwa
twice
Psy
Rain
G-Dragon
CL
There are very few groups that have charted in the US billboard non-Kpop or international charts, but in addition to several of the groups listed above, these have on the album charts, which speaks to the globalization of Kpop:
- TXT
- SuperM (whether you think they failed or not, they entered two albums at 1 and 2 in BB charts when many groups with more longevity haven’t ever cracked it. After BTS, they are the highest charting BB act.)
- Monsta X
- Loona
(If you’re interested, EXO, BTS, Blackpink, Twice, Bigbang, 2NE1 and GG are the ones to crack albums. BTS, Blackpink, Psy, CL, BoA, Jonghyun, Taeyang and Wonder Girls cracked the singles charts.)

Seo Taji and the Boys - blueprint of kpop
H.O.T. - first idol group, massively successful
g.o.d. - first huge JYP group, last group to sell 1 million + of an album for over 10 years
TVXQ - started hallyu wave in Japan, started 2nd generation
SNSD - had the first kpop m/v to break 100 million views, first girl group (and so far only one) that at its peak was the biggest group period
Wonder Girls - big hits, first korean act to chart in billboard top 100
Big Bang - huge international fanbase for the time and extremely popular with the GP, perhaps the most ever. Made YG what it is today.
EXO - first group to sell over a million copies of an album in 12 years, first group to sell 10 million albums in Korea period, massive breakthrough into Chinese market, kicked off the 3rd generation
BTS - obvious, the most famous group ever, the most popular group ever, and when all is said and done probably the most important group ever if they aren't already
remains to be seen: Twice and Blackpink, Twice took the crown from SNSD as biggest gg and then BP took it from them, both huge international fanbases, charted on billboard top 10, numerous PAKs etc. But It could be in the wake of BTS taking kpop global that follow-up groups from JYP/Bighit/SM/YG do the same thing but are even bigger as kpop gets more global.

SHINee, they were one of the first groups to compose/write their own music, and the reason we have dance practices, and the Kpop norm changed as a whole
Kpoppies do not put enough respect on their name, and it's enraging. Like actually do your research. Not to mention Jonghyun got a solo so soon after debut.

I'd add SHINee here, but other than that, I support this.

Well, depends on how long the essay is gonna be.
I think def. look at chaesoo's list and whittle it down to pick a few main groups from each "gen" to hone in on and show how they moved the K-Pop genre as a whole forward in SK, other parts of Asia (esp. SEA, China, Japan), and then the rest of the world. I say hone in on specific groups so you can give specific examples of cultural movements rather than fanning out and being too general.
InceptionMovement(s)
Cultivation
Growth
Adaptation
Musical Inspirations
And, though folks like to crap on YT/YTers, there's plenty of people who do videos on the inception/growth of K-Pop (like to loved or hated DK people). I'd definitely look at a few of those for direction, at the very least, on what points to hit.
You can end it with talking about the 4th Gen (inception and where it looks like it's going/taking K-POP now.)
