Stray Kids made their first appearance as a group in the pre-debut show of the same name. Its concept was trainees selected by Bang Chan working together to complete missions against JYP to prove their worthiness of debut, and ran from October 17 2017 to December 19 2017. Following the show, they released their pre-debut mini album titled Mixtape on January 8 2018, with the title track Hellevator.
They made their official debut on March 25 2018 with their mini album I am NOT. The album was released on the 26th, following their debut showcase titled Stray Kids Unveil (Op. 01: I Am Not) held the day before.
The official fandom name "Stay" was announced on August 1. The meaning behind it is that "stay" is "stray" without the "r", which stands for reason, meaning that stay make Stray Kids stay.
On August 6 2018 they made their first comeback with the mini album I am WHO, continuing the series centered around self-discovery and identity.
On October 22 2018 they released their mini album I am YOU, which marked the last album of the "I am" trilogy.
Their efforts earned them numerous rookie awards during the award season.
The showcase tour Unveil tour "I am..." began in early 2019, and had stops in Southeast Asia, Australia, Japan, Europe, and the US.
On March 25 2019, their debut anniversary, they released the mini album Clé 1:Miroh, with the concept of the new series being running into a maze without knowing what is awaiting one at the end. On April 4 the group received their first music show win on M Countdown with Miroh.
On June 19 2019 they released their first repackaged mini album Clé 2: Yellow Wood. The album included three new songs including the psychedelic trance infused title track Side Effects, and the four "Mixtape" songs from previous albums, which were physical only until then.
From November 9, Double Knot was promoted on music shows as a pre-release digital single for Clé: Levanter.
Due to the sudden departure of ex-member Woojin on October 28, the release date of Astronaut and Clé: Levanter had to be postponed. Their official lightstick, a minimalistic, light design with a spinning compass in its globe, was revealed on November 16. On November 23 and 24, their first concert, District 9: Unlock was held in Seoul. Clé: Levanter, the last instalment of their Clé trilogy was finally released on December 9. The title track Levanter earned them their second music show win overall, on M Countdown. As a part of a new project tiled "Mixtape Project", the song Gone Days was released as a digital single on December 26.
The digital single Step Out Of Clé was released on January 24 2020 and included English versions of Double Knot and Levanter, which they also performed in the US. The District 9: Unlock tour also continued, but dates after February were cancelled due to the COVID 19 pandemic. SKZ2020, a compilation album including Japanese versions of three title tracks and several songs from before Clé: Levanter re-recorded as eight members (in Korean), served as the group's official Japanese debut. On March 26, the Mixtape Project continued with the digital single Mixtape: On Track (바보라도 알아), which is also the latest song in the series as of now. Early 2020 it was also revealed that Stray Kids would provide the opening and ending theme of the anime Tower of God. TOP and Slump, respectively, were released in Japanese, Korean, and English. Meanwhile, the group also wrote and performed the song Hello Stranger for the webdrama Pop Out Boy.
On May 27, an enigmatic concept trailer titled GO生 was uploaded, and the upcoming first full album of Stray Kids was announced to be released on June 17. The tile of the album can be read as gosaeng, meaning hardship, however the character 生 also means life, hence the English title of the album, Go Live. The title track "God's Menu" earned Stray Kids the title "pioneers of the mala taste genre" from Korean media and is considered a turning point in the group's career. According to leader Bang Chan, the concept of the album is defined by its creation process: rather than choosing a theme first and writing the songs accordingly like with previous album series, this time they made everything on spot without a set concept, in order to express their colours.
The b-side song Easy also received short music show promotions.
The suspenseful concept trailer IN生 was released on August 24 to announce the September 14 release of their first repackaged album IN生, or in English, In Life. The album included the songs from Go Live (except the ones that were singles prior the album) and eight new songs (of which three unit songs were first performed at Unlock: District 9 Seoul). Stray Kids received two music show wins with the title track Back Door, and the song was also recognised, among many others, by Time magazine on its annual top 10 songs list – the first song by a Korean boy group, and overall third song by a Korean artist to ever do so. IN生 is also one of the few repackage albums to outsell the original in the first week.
On November 4 they released their first Japanese mini album All In, which included three original songs and the Japanese versions of their 2020 titles.
On November 22 Stray Kids held their first online concert Unlock: Go Live In Life via Beyond Live, since the Unlock: District 9 tour couldn't be properly continued due to the pandemic.
At MAMA2020, Stray Kids announced their attendance at Mnet's boy group competition show Kingdom with a special performance of Victory Song.
