actually, IVE didnt just have "an izone member". They have TWO, and one of them is Wonyoung the IT girl, the other being Yujin which is top tier in popularity too
Having good music doesnt guarantee success - Agree. But having someone in your group that attract stans + good music will get your there.
Everglow simply failed because (1) they're from Chinese-associated company Yuehua (2) their visual/center is a Chinese member (3) lack of stan attractor (4) too much lines to Mia (5) mistreatment of 3 other members with little to no lines. Everglow had a good start with BBC, Adios & Dun Dun. But eventually they got overshadowed cause good song can only get u so far

Well I did see a couple of teasers of the new sm bg and I thought wow this is the most bland BG I've ever seen in my life.

IVE is soo random. I mean good music doesn't always mean success look at groups like everglow, true they had an izone member but that didn't guarantee success for the other izone acts.. anyway some more will come to mind.

Wut? Every Izone member is successful. Yena and Chaeyeon are the only 4th gen soloists to hit top 30 on Melon Weekly, Yena hit top 10. Eunbi is appearing on every variety show in Korea and Yuri is about to star in Squid Games 2. LSRFM is a top 5 group, Ive is #1.
Shocked at Idle. I left them for dead after Soojin's scandal. Now they're only a bit behind Ive and NJ for top Korean act.
RV too. I thought they were finished after Wendy's freak accident and Irene's scandal but they def have firm roots in Korea, they can still chart decently.

Funny I actually had gidle in mind when I thought of making the thread.
But then forgot when I wrote it
Not that they're super successful, just when they debuted they gave the vibe that they'd be a super underrated group cursed into nugudom forever and disbanding after a couple years. It didn't help that they lost a member immediately after debut. But they've gone viral a couple times, had a pretty big sleeper hit in Korea, and have even won a music show.

iFans seems to like them a lot for some reason. They have hits that came from nowhere, unpromoted b sides that go viral for no reason
They also is by far the Hybe group with the lowest amount of support from their company, as they were formed by a joint venture with Mnet
I will never understand this because for me they were very unskilled, and their concept is just not visually interesting (their music and MVs is mostly just dark shades). Their music is not catchy either. Still they found their niche, which is remarkable

I think the hybe name was Just really strong at the time.
NJ, G idle and maybe Rize although I'm not sure if Rize are considered succesful yet but they are for a 5th/4th boy group
Newjeans and GIDLE. Idle because of the bullying scandal. I remember watching a solo song from Yuqi thinking how sad it was that I might never hear her voice again.
Then they literally came back like giants, becoming a top group. Amazing honestly.
Newjeans because their concept was so different from what was going on in K-pop at the time plus LSF had just debuted. I didn’t know who they were appealing too but they soared beyond my imagination. I recently watched their GDA performance and admired how good their songs were. I get why they’re so loved, good music is good music.
They really got my in a choke hold with Cool with you and super why.
Fifty Fifty success and downfall surprised me the most
A lot popular girlgroups from the last couple of years suprise me a bit, or at least how popular they are. The obvious one, NewJeans. I really don't understand what people see in them and their songs. At the same time i'm not suprised they did well because of them debuting from a big company, but suprised they have become so popular. Could say the same regarding LE SSERAFIM.
Also G-Idle and IVE also suprise me a bit. Aespa also, I thought their weak songs would hurt the popularity a bit more.
On the other hand groups like Oh My Girl and StayC maybe are a bit underrated, even if I'm not that suprised.
And the popularity of Jennie (BP) is also something I don't really understand.

If we're being 100% honest, NewJeans. What they did from their debut until now is literally unprecedented.
A K-Pop girl group releasing music with absolutely no teasers? No promo? Nothing? Just "Hi, we're NewJeans and here's our debut EP" and then just letting the public consume their music before they know anything about the group or its concept? That was actually insane to experience in an industry predicated on building as much hype as possible for absolutely everything.
And then once the shock of their debut was over, their almost instant ascension into K-Pop superstars was even more insane. They set and broke records at a rate that has never been seen, and suddenly Koreans coined the phrase "The world is NewJeans" and they're everywhere.
As a dedicated girl group stan, the whirlwind of NewJeans is still surreal to me. They're making incredibly difficult achievements seem ordinary. PAKs? #1 Album in the states? Billboard Hot 100? Spotify? Daesangs? Topping Gallup? It's been almost a decade or NEVER for so many of the things they've speedrun through, and the critical acclaim and widespread love for the quality of their music itself is undeniable.
If you took what NewJeans has done on paper, and presented it to me before the day of their debut, I'd laugh and say your creative writing piece requires too much suspension of disbelief.
But here we are.
probably stray kids. I couldn’t stand their music & I thought they were the first flops of JYP when they debuted. But they actually became more successful after some years have passed.
They have managed to build a big loyal fanbase that finally helped them to enter billboard hot 100 recently which is really impressive.
I’m still not a fan of their music and will never become a Stay bc at the end of the day music is what matters most to me but I still admire and respect their hard work over the last 6 years
