They debuted at the very beginning of the 4th gen and also right when the 3rd gen ended.

To me they are like AOA
Timeline is fuzzy

Agreed. Although I have an easier time saying (G)i-dle is 4th gen than AOA being 3rd gen. Like I refuse to acknowledge them as a 3rd gen group it just sounds and feels so wrong. At least with (G)idle most of their competition has been against 4th gen groups. But AOA was competing against Apink, Sistar, Girl's Day, all 2nd gen groups.

yes and i don't see why is still a discussion 4 years later, the industry counts them as 4th gen which mean they are, i can see why people question Loona looking how they started to promote the group back in 2016 but Gidle make no sense, nobody question Stray kids which debuted before Gidle (and had a survival show in 2017 and a pre-release in jan 2018)
It doesn't matter when you want 4th gen to start, the industry chose it, if i'm gonna count how i want, 2020 should be 4th gen start because covid changed everything about promotions, which also make sense for a generation change, there is no difference between 2018 and 2019 for a generation change.

They are labeled as 4th generation and because I am not an expert on this argument then I will consider them like that lol

Yeah they’re both 4th gen

I guess so since the Korean media does
-
Gidle is 4th gen.
I mean, how can u group then as 3rd gen with Twice, BP and Red velvet. It doesnt make sense.
-
I mean, their contemporaries are basically 4th gen groups.
They've done the most collab stages with Itzy. On Queendom they were the rookies and "maknae", commented on as the "new generation" against groups like MMM and Oh My Girl which are 3rd gen.
Other times Korean Media has said they are 4th gen. To me their basically the female version (or SKZ the male version, whatever floats your boat), if you like, of SKZ. Debut around the same time, self-producing in all aspects, and basically just given free reign for creativity. So if SKZ are 4th gen, so is Idle. If SKZ are 3rd gen, so is Idle.
And since no-one wants to spent the next 10 years fighting with stays, SKZ is 4th Gen, therefore so is Idle.

Yes.

To me, they're the poster child of the 3rd/4th gen cusp

No. I would say we can't hardly say a 4th generation really have begun, at least anything debuting before 2021 is 3rd generation or let say Aespa at the end of 2020 is among the first "4th generation". Why do I believe this? Let say the 2nd genaration for girlgroups started with Wonder Girls and Girl's Generation in 2007, I think a lot of can agree with that. Let also say that the 3rd generation started around the debut with Red Velvet (2014), Twice (2015) and Blackpink (2016). Let's say around 2014-2015. That is about 7 years from between the start of 2gen to start of 3rd gen. Add seven years you have around 2021. Seven years are also the longest legal contract time a company can sign with a group I think. When did Loona debut, 2016? Make no sence at all to call them a 4th generation group when the debut the same year as Blackpink. Gidle? 2018, getting close but still no. And it's not only about the years is about making impact and taking over from the older "generation". As long as you have Twice and Blackpink still being at the top it's hard to say we have a change in generations.
But I think the talk about "generations" have more or less have lost it's meaning now. It hade some kind of meaning when talking about first generation girl groups and second generation. But after that the border have been become weaker and weaker. -

So Big Bang/Super Junior who debut in 2005-2006 are in the same gen as BTS who debut in 2013
BTS are 2nd Gen I guess?

either way their style looks more like early 4th, late 3rd. I've never bothered to do gens in detail because there is no standard, just what's widely accepted.
