Acting is where the talentless idols go to earn their income

All I know is that acting is way more respected than idol music in Korea. And most idols use kpop as a steppingstone for a much stable career in acting or television industry

Do kyung soo and IU would disagree with you - both talented as musicians and actors.

Saying that though - you have a bunch of other examples of talentless (at least musically) visuals who use kpop as a stepping stone to an acting career

There are exceptions like D.O, IU and Suzy (but Suzy is more popular than her group and I don't see her as a soloist).

I suppose there are some idols that might thrive more in acting than music. Doesn't make them untalented in music of course, but acting just suits them better.

Acting takes talent, if you have ever watched a low budget film you will know what I mean.

Also some of the biggest idols in the industry are actors for example IU, Jaejoong etc.

I dont mind them playing side characters but most of the idol actors in main character are pain to watch.

there's plenty of idols who wanted to go into acting first but the company puts them in idol groups to gain popularity. Jisoo, Minju, Yoona and plenty others.

I honestly agree. I find the four of them (Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, Seohyun) to be quite decent. They improve in each new role which is important. They're the only idol group I know where everyone who went into acting is doing well. Yuri's last drama did well and brought more attention to her. Sooyoung is now starting to get more exposure and roles, Yoona's last few films have done very well and have shown tons of improvement, and Seohyun is starting to pick up more roles and diverse her filmography.

I know right, pretty amazing.

Tiffany is also going to have a debut in acting with a small role. Who knows maybe she might be a full on actress too. By then SNSD will be more of an actress group then an idol group lol.

Depends, if they are your typical visual I would say yes, but some idols just use kpop as a way to get popular and become actors.

How many actually succeed though? I dont see very many Idols in the cast lists for the top dramas or movies. Probably thousands of idols have tried to transition to acting over the past 25 years....how many of them have actually achieved the same or higher level of success as actors than they achieved as idols? Arent most of them barely hanging on, struggling desperately to cobble together a viable and respected career, relegated to bit roles and D level projects and webdramas and commercials?

Dude most of the best actor idols are also excellent artists? D.O, both Jinyoungs, Seungyoon, Krystal, Siwon, Sungjae, Taecyeon, Sooyoung, etc etc

if you're talentless the worst choice ever is to start acting.. there's no amount of camera work, makeup, clothes or visuals that will save you

idk about talentless but some of them really should not act. Like i cant take Jisoo seriously with that talking voice of hers

Let’s talk about how a lot of idol actors get away with mediocre acting cause no one seen their acting projects

u can cultivate a longer and more lucrative career if dive into acting and are actually good

soloist rarely do that well, they could underperform easily and not all can sell well physically or sell out concerts

If u can built a good career thru decent acting u will always have jobs

Even most actor-actors need a few projects to be decent.

Idols because of their pre-existing fame are harshly judged from their very first project.

Idols - are at a junction between singing, dancing, modeling and acting.

They aren't the best singers, dancers, models or actors, but a package with each leaning a bit more into one of the skills.

Given that a lot of idol content is consumed through camera/screen, than live. They do need skills with managing expressions. I recollect someone analysing Rose- On the Ground with IU- Lilac.

Music, dance apart, IU has mastered micro expressions very well to romance the camera, Rose is lacking in that - yet.

Besides acting is better for a longer term career and if successful pays far better, when compared to "idol" at similar levels.

So it is a good career to shift to, successful idol or not.

Well, they earn money for each episode so still a win for them.

Acting is hard. Bad acting makes a film unbearable to watch.
