Hidden Gems #82: Up And Down by Ye-A

On this series we remember songs that have been forgotten or were never even given the attention they deserved. Today's Hidden Gem is Up & Down by Ye-A

In 2014 there were tons of girl groups debuting that showed tons of potential, but didn't go anywhere. One of them was Ye-A. The song is nothing revolutionary, but it gets stuck in your head.

You might recognize one familiar face in this MV. Thats because one of them went on to be a megastar, Kwon Eunbi, the solo artist formerly of Iz*one. Her stage name in this group was Kazoo which I think is a cute stage name. All the members of Ye-A supported Eunbi when she competed on Iz*one, so that goes to show you how nice she is irl. Ye-A disbanded after their debut, so the fact that they still cheered her on meant something. One of the members used to be in GP Basic before she debuted with Ye-A. Finally, one member, Pier, re-debuted as the leader of Geegu, who sadly disbanded last year. It's refreshing though to do this series and finally talk about somebody who was successful later on.

I legit don't remember this one at all. It's crazy how these companies invested so much to release a rather sizeable group with honestly a serviceable song -- it's not amazing, but it's not bad -- and then seemingly don't plan for how the hell they're going to fund the song after that and after that until the group is stable enough for comebacks to generate money.

I call it the "all eggs in one basket" strategy. They invest everything into the debut, probably debut the girls fast without too much training, and expect the group to blow up. 95% of the time they don't even get moderate attention and the company is brokity broke. The members start dropping like flies cause they see the writing on the wall, they add new members but it's basically a new girl group at this point, and then they disband after their first comeback, if they even make it that far.
