Is NewJeans as popular now as Twice was in 2016?

Twice didn’t have competition in 2016 the same way NJ do. In sales. In digitals. In every sphere there’s competition among GG’s. While 2016 was firmly Twice’s year. So it’s hard to gauge. Korea seems to be loving all things GGs in the past year or so. We’ll have to see about a year or so to gauge what their impact really is.
But they are certainly extremely popular right now.

Did people forget about IVE?
Lol what's IVE? A beverage brand or something?

This was Korea in 2016

In Korea i assume?
Peakwise, No. The only song released after Cheer up which had higher peak was dynamite.
Longevity wise, hype boy is still top 3 in charts which better than CU and TT.
Impact wise, twice hands down.
So it's 2-1. What sets Newjeans apart is that no other GG in history had simultaneously occupied top 3 in all the charts. The only group who was able to do that was BigBang and that's it. This is the scary part about NJ.

This is Twice a year after debut.
Do you have the 2020-2022 numbers?
-
-
-
We'll never know.
Times are different back then. Currently, kpop is much larger internationally and digital consumption is different vs 7 years ago and many other factors.
Take for example, albums sell alot more now than before, it used to be hitting 100k was a huge milestone, heck, just couple years ago, 100k was the threshold from a nugu group going to mid tier.
Chances are, whatever metrics are you are planning on using to compare to Twice will not be good measures now. With data, you can only make objective statements for what is true at the time. You can't make any accurate comparison statements between two groups of two different time periods.

It is not that hard to search it up urself

I really want to know what competition NJ has that Twice didn't.
GFriend and Mamamoo released the biggest hit of their career in 2016. BP debuted with a PAK and PWF was released the same time as TT. Red Velvet released Russian Roulette which is one of their biggest hit.
Who are NJ competing with? IVE, Idle, and LSF.
TWICE's competition was: GFriend, MMM, RV, BP.
Album sales were weak but all these groups scored #1 hits in 2016 and digitals matter more than album sales. They both had a lot of competition.

NewJeans as popular now as Twice was in 2016?
nope
reason
after SNSD on hiatus and already a senior group not including some other 2nd Gen GG already disbanded or tailed end
TWICE at that time 2016 perfect timing for a new Nation GG in the making
pre 2016
2013-2015 GG era rules by sexy concept (AOA ,EXID, Sistar, Girls Day etc)
a fresh young GG debut on 2015 TWICE - Like Ohh Ahh
and comeback hit Cheer Up and TT on 2016
fresh and young concept (same as IVE and Newjeans) w sexy appeal
TWICE dominate that year 2016
backing GP popularity
they also had strong competitor BP and I.O.I
Cheer Up and TT unanimously top song of 2016
No one say Newjeans as the Nation GG (only by their fans/hybe marketing)
compared to TWICE in 2016 as the next nation GG
Newjeans popularity or recent comeback
is back by massive HYBE and Newjeans fandom
their comeback song popularity
result of recently bias hype due to debut song popularity
and media play marketing -

The only valid argument is NJ charting multiply songs in the top 10 but there’s not point comparing the longevity of a 2022 songs to 2021. Years ago charting a year in melon was rare only the mega super hits could done it. If you think songs like fearless or eleven are bigger than cheer up well you know nothing about charts.

Twice was still ahead of them in every metrics NJ competition is much harder despite having less.
RV was inconsistent, BP wasn’t considered a real competition until 2018. MMD was rising later, Gfriend faded quickly.

Like some people said the comparison should be with Ive, the hits they've released in their first year and how fast they've blown up (also with physical sales) is really similar. As a whole group Twice was probably a bit more popular but Ive has Wonyoung who is more popular than any Twice member back then.
New jeans should not be compared yet, they debuted 5 months ago and they've broken records left and right, they already have like 3 big hits (maybe 4 if OMG's performance improves a bit) and other song with a good performance, 5 months into their debut Twice didn't even release Cheer up yet, Like ooh ahh was being succesful but not even close to NJ's debut, it was more similar to Eleven. Also Twice had Sixteen to build hype around them the months before and we all were aware that they were coming, they had the Jyp hype after all the previous super succesful Jyp ggs debuts, we already knew the members... NJ's debut came out of nowhere but it still smashed, New Jeans kind of popularity right after debut is probably something that has never happened before, the question is if they will continue like this and keep growing or not but their roof is way above the rest.

i don't why you're suddenly comparing fearless and eleven to cheer up. It doesn't make sense. Cheer up is more comparable to next level or love dive.
-
That’s not my point.

Obviously they did “better” looking at the numbers, you have to keep the generation shift in mind. Kpop in 2015 did not have the popularity it does in 2022.
The way charts work have completely changed and physicals have increased drastically.

Yeah Gfriend was strong in 2016
But not red velvet, red velvet was still consider as an underwhelming GG who continuously get hits and flops and were inconsistent until they drop Red flavor that's the moment they started looking like a real threat
Mamamoo ?? they were doing great in 2016 but were never seen as a serious competition because everybody was thinking it was just luck when they became successfull thanks to you're the best, it's when they start releasing decalcomanie, yes i am and finally starry night that they were seen as serious competition
and BP just debuted
Newjeans is facing a lot more serious competition and much more competition than Twice did in 2016, with Aespa, Idle, Ive and Lesserafim who are 4 groups who show that they are consistent in getting top 10 hits, and gets a lot of recognition in korea among the gp, and have already really big fandom
and the shadow of Baby monster, and iland gg, just waiting to debut
and even if they flopped hard lately itzy is still a competitor and show with sneakers that they can still continue to get hits here and there
-
Just a little over a year ago, Aespa was the proclamied winner of 4th gen girlgroups, then came gidle, then ive and now its newjeans...
in their first three years twice released ten singles, nine of them (consecutive) reached #1.
People say twice had a short peak, but looking at the average hold of girlgroups today, its an eternity in comparison. Id wait a year or two before starting to compare

but you're still wrong.
what made you think charting on melon before was rare compared now? because for me it was the opposite.
if you look at the number of kpop idol songs that charted in gaon year-end digital chart from 2015-2021, it keeps on decreasing.
in 2020 melon had their major change to their chart system that made idols to chart even harder

I had no knowledge of charts back then but I honestly don't remember these groups other than gfriend making any noise in 2016 (obviously besides twice).

We have provided more information on this in our privacy policy.Tbh, whether its easier or harder to chart now can be up for debate but one thing that's absolutely true is that the charts have changed a lot since 2016.
Not just the reforms on melon but also the fact that melon has been bleeding users and doesn't have anywhere near as many as they used to. Nowadays the #1 song getting 1 million unique listeners and maintaining them is almost unheard of. Most Koreans have been moving to other platforms like YouTube music.
That's why it's just not practical to compare the charts now to back then. Same with album sales and YouTube views, the kpop landscape has just changed so much in the last couple of years.
-
To answer OP's question, it's difficult to compare for reasons already mentioned. But also twice were the undisputed #1 gg in every metric, not just of their generation but overall at the time.
Right now Newjeans has too much competition with Ive as well as other groups like Aespa and idle in their own generation. Then there's Blackpink who are the biggest gg in kpop atm, and then even 2nd gen gg like snsd and kara are having big comebacks.
-
-
I don't how you guys still don't won't to get it 4gen has a lot of competition in few months Aespa, Ive and Lesserafim will comeback and you guys will change narrative all over again, each time one of these groups comeback you guys start naming them as the ultimate number one like aren't you tired ?

If we're solely talking about Korea, NewJeans is bigger. Rather than having that one huge hit that sends them off to stardom like with Twice, they have a hit debut album. People keep on talking about numbers and how many weeks x song stayed in x chart. What people aren't bringing up however is cultural impact. In terms of cultural impact in korea I would say New Jeans is bigger. People seem to like their music as a whole and not just their title tracks. There are people in their 30s and 40s that regularly listen to New Jeans and enjoy their music. Twice's peak, as many have been saying, is more akin to what Ive has done in the last year. People in their teens and 20s loved Twice but when you got to the 30's and up it was more like they had heard the name but aren't interested in idol music. They liked them for their catchy titles but weren't interested further than that. And I think the type of cultural relevance that New Jeans is reaching is the closest thing we've got since when Girls generation was the nation's girl group. I'm not saying that New Jeans is anywhere near the peak of GG's cultural relevance just that they are the closest thing since them.

No, because TWICE was the indisputable #1 GG in 2016, so all eyes were on them. Yes, some female groups had hits here and there in 2016, but when you looked at the big picture and analyze all the metrics, TWICE was ahead any of them by a landscape.
And It was like that until 2018 when BLACKPINK dropped Square Up era and they started looking like the threat. You know, the REAL threat, in all metrics, not only getting a smash hit and calling it a day. Digitals, streaming and impact wish they washed out everything TWICE released that year and even physical sales were matching when you compared individually album per album. On top of that, they proved their individual force with Jennie's successful solo.
NewJeans digital force has been ahead, but physicals they are not the biggest, their international popularity can be comparable to IVE and LSRF and touring other girlgroups in their generation has started, so they have the advantage right now.
It doesn't mean NewJeans can't be the indisputable #1 GG in the future and be even more popular than TWICE, cause maybe their trajectory and the challenges they face are just different.
-
The difference is snsd and twice where they biggest in everything until they weren't
That's not the case for 4th gen GG's, I've has digital, it girl and physicals; NJ has digital and Spotify, aespa ha physical sales. No gg has all, none of them dominate everything and very few had members the gn recognize just for themselves (ex: WY, so just Ive)
