Side Effects is an art, and an experimental one at that, yet it got backlashed to heck and back. No idea how well it charted though since I don't keep up with charts, but since their fandom was much smaller back then and the song was so polarizing, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that it didn't chart all that well.

i think SM’s motivate has always been, release good music, and success would follow.

SM has always seemed to be following their own path musically and trying to push boundaries of kpop.

So yes and no. They obviously want success but they want success without compromising what THEY believe is good music/interesting and not just following trends.

This is such a bleak outlook about kpop. Look at something like Next Level. SM bought a song and their in-house producers completely changed and added to the song.

CEOs don’t care about art, but the people actually tasked with producing and creating artistic direction of groups do. Some of you look at companies as single units, when most are made up of failed singers, choreographers, who love music and have passion.

Red Velvet and SHINee as a group. I think SM groups in general. They try to make quality and different music. Yes they buy songs but they try to differentiate and modernize it. As a Soloist I think Taemin because his music is so different and artistic. Rather than presenting something that belongs to Kpop, he's creates him own artist identity.

I've noticed that this is true of many rock and band-based music, whether it's Day6 or my local faves. there are no artists who are 100% for art within the kpop mold

even small companies aim for profit because if they don't they go bankrupt

the closest to that are groups that are part of your entire creative process and even these groups will somehow want profit to survive

All the experimental music is cool and all, but let's not pretend these companies and artists aren't trying to make money at the end of the day. They have employees to pay.

Taking a risky musical path =/= for the arts. There's no correlation whatsoever.

They care to a certain point and depending on the company, companies care about money but charting is just a part of digitals, which isn't even the 2nd most important money source for most K-pop companies. I'm convinced SM for example doesn't care that much abour charting or music show wins since like 2015. The fact NCT struggled to chart for years on Korea and SM hasn't changed the type of music they do knowing damn well how divisive it is tells you enough about how much they care.
