Why are BigHit Labels boy groups so successful in Japan in terms of fanbase and selling ?

  • BTS and SEVENTEEN dominated the Japan market for Korean acts in 2020 and TXT is right now joining the top 3 best sellers at the moment there.

We can say BigHit is dominating the market for Korean boy groups in Japan.

  • Because they are the only company that is really trying

SM abandoned the market for some obscure reason. They release some cheap albums, make tour once in a blue moon and call it a day

YG always used Japan as low-investiment cash cows for touring. What surprises me is how well it works, iKon and Blackpink sells poorly and still manage to have very long tours

JYP is investing a lot since 2PM era, he's just choosing to promote girlgroups instead

  • This. I feel like if RBW, JYP, and YG invested more into Oneus, SKZ, and Treasure, TXT would have more competition from Korean acts.

They're not that big in Japan to be competing with the likes of JO1 or SixTones yet.

    Is he.....you know?

This is the craziest so far, considering its a Korean album of a 2 months old group.

  • If we are talking about groups without Japanese members, without having a popular and catchy music in their debut with organic growth, I agree. I have always seen that even the not so appreciated groups in Korea are popular in Japan but have a powerful fandom at the moment is TVXQ, BB, BTS, SVT and TXT. But it is true that BH prefers the Japanese market. and to respond to a user who mentioned SixTones before I will only say that neither J01 can sell like SixTones

  • To think that before SM had their group sing the opening for ONE PIECE aka the biggest anime of all time and nowadays they don't even try to get any ost at all. What was even the last time they released a japanese song. Seems like they don't give af anymore.

Seems they want to try this year

1st Japan Mini Album 「BAEKHYUNreleased this week

#NCT127 will release their 2nd mini album ‘LOVEHOLIC’ in Japan on February 17th

What I don't understand is why

JP is the best market for kpop and their last effort to break into it was Shinee some 10 years ago.

    f(x)? Never tried

EXO, released an album when the group was almost 6 years old, sold decently but it was too late

Red Velvet, released an album, flopped, never tried again

NCT... no sign of the japanese subunit that was supposed to exist

And Aespa doesn't look very JP-friendly either

  • it doesn’t even make sense why SM knowingly stopped trying to promote their groups in the Japanese market. Does it even make sense that EXO have exactly one Japanese album in their almost 9 year career lol.

You have to make a conscience effort to promote in Japan beyond a certain point and sell more albums.

SM seems happy enough with that concert money looks like lol and didn’t try beyond that.

Baekhyun had a japanese album (which is doing great btw), but no promotions. Sm released it and that was it.

Nct might get promotions though, Sm concentrate their efforts on them these past few years.

Right before he has to enlist lol. What was even the point he can’t even capitalize on it. SM only releases Japanese album so they can perform it at concert I.e Baekhyun performed it at his Beyond Live. Not with intention to make their group more popular in Japan.

Exactly. EXO barely released any Japanese material. Couple of singles and one album.

SM should have pushed in Japan in 2015-16-17 with multiple albums, Japan exclusive tours etc

    I love Pikachu.

    Always have, Always will.

Somehow people only know J01 and Sixtones, when a whole snowman and kinpuri exist :waterr: but I'm happy, sixtones is a little bit known even by non jpop fans.

Tbh, I'm kinda surprised seeing TXT heavy promotion in Japan. They perform in a lot of music shows, had their own variety shows in abema etc. Maybe if miss rona already gone, TXT might held some showcase (are they big enough to held concert in arena? My dream seeing them in Yokohama Arena)

  • But wait, ain't Dynamite doing extremely well over there?

Yeah. Dynamite is the biggest foreign hit in Japan since 2012ish with CMM by Carly Rae Jepsen and WWNGBT by Taylor Swift. It ended at #7 on Oricon year-end for streaming despite 4 months of tracking and top 20 on HOT 100. It has spent 23 straight weeks in the top 7 and will end in the top 5-10 on the year-end HOT 100 JP for this year as well. It is honestly a monstrous hit there at the moment.

  • Nct have had japnese releases from 127 and dream and at least rv japan promos gave this masterpiece

dunno why some are claiming sm abandoned japan when a bunch of boy groups had japanese albums. confusing.

    congrats to svt and txt!!

That's not a real release, it's a recopilation of their old koreans songs in korean language that wasn't promoted. Dream don't even have a full korean album, yet alone a single original japanese song (!)

127 despite having the first japanese SM idol, only released 1 mini and 1 album on their whole career there, loveholic would their third release

Suju, SHINee and TVXQ are old acts, they barely go there other than to tour and they rely on their old, loyal fanbase. Like jype with 2pm, they aren't catering to new fans, just using the old ones. While they didn't try with got7 and day6

  • The reason why K-pop has become more popular than J-pop is not at all because ""it's better."" Thinking this way is totally wrong because the music market in Japan is huge. If you think J-pop only bands like AKB48, then let me tell you that you are wrong. The music market in Japan is very large. The Japanese market has it all. EVERYTHING. Western music, K-pop music, cute concept, girl in love concept https://theporndudethefappeningblog.com/ , hip hop, ballad, rock, etc. Even some bands mix rock and traditional music. Yeap, this is crazy.

Edited once, last by kretiols ().

And even then, 127's "full japanese album" had like 6 actual new japanese songs, the rest was korean stuff they had already released, Regular english version, etc. Not to mention NCT Dream's mini that the only japanese thing It had was... The release. On almost 5 years, NCT as a whole has released less than 15 japanese songs, that's not really trying, SM only cares about Japan when It comes to touring since years ago and It shows, it's a secondary market for them when It comes to album sales.

    Neo got my back

  • people are saying about promotion?!

"Dynamite" made history in Japan. Was it in japanese? Nope.

Was it promoted on Japan? Nope.

Isn't Dynamite the one & only Kpop Artist's song in history to have been "Platinum certificate" by RIAAJ( The biggest Music certification platform of JAPAN)? -Yeap!!!
