as an observer since my bias in SM (I refused to be called company stan cause I spend more time hating SM ) :
Yes I agree that they wanted Western Breakthrough but I think you guys forgot one major thing . SM wanted to do it with their 'own way'. Instead of giving in like the other company (giving their acts mainstream sound to make it in the west). SM took different approach, they are giving their acts : SM Experimental Music aka SMP. Let's take a look at the group that Kpop fans said are getting 'pushed' in the west: aespa, nct 127 and Super M latest title tracks. Their music style all has the same SM experimental signature sound/melody. Do you notice it? This genre by nature is less popular picks so the results was expected really. By now you guys should realize that the acts that SM selected aren't the problem, the songs that SM gave for them are. It won't make any difference if let's say SM giving exo or rv US label, if they still getting the same experimental SMP music too then the results will not change .
SM could giving in with what the public actually wants but matter of fact is they want to be the Trend. They insist to try until somehow someday their music finally be popular and will be palatable to international audience. However they need to balancing experimental sound with public friendliness in order to be accepted because looking at the music charts even SK public listeners are growing tired of whatever SM put out lately.
(just a hunch) Maybe just maybe SM stubbornness would change seeing that NewJeans is entering BB Hot100 which their acts has never do so. I predict in this year they will give Hit Song to at least one of their acts. Knowing that SM is a petty ex, they will absolutely hate losing the gg market to one of their ex. So that's why I think SM more likely to give it to aespa. Moreover, aespa is taking too long to comeback and there're no comeback news until now.
Yet they went very safe with aespa's english single....it this point its simply complacency and incompetence
