NewJeans became the first 4th gen artist to chart on the BB Hot 100 and Fifty Fifty followed close behind after they released one of the biggest kpop hits in the west of all time. So looking back on it now, it's kinda funny how all the 4th gen girl groups from a few years ago that were made for the west opted for noise music. Ditto, OMG, and Cupid are all chill pop songs with catchy hooks and addicting beats. They're simple and easy to listen to. Thinking about it now I wonder WHY companies thought the way to break into the Western market was noise music when Taylor Swift is one of the U.S.'s top artists and her music is as simple as it gets.
I find it funny how 2/3 years ago companies thought the key to western success was noise music

well said.

Every kpop company wanted their own HYLT and Mic Drop so of course they would release music like that

I never understood K-pop Stans’ problem with 4G noise music. Did people also complained about noise music when big bang released Bang x3 ? There was always noise music. Get over it. NJ and FF being girls made it easier to be successful. I bet Enhypen singing those songs would not have charted on BB.

Bang Bang Bang is NOT noise music what are you talking about

I actually don't have that much of a problem with noise music, I like it when it's done correctly. One of my favorite songs is pretty noisy. I just think it's funny that companies were convinced that noisy music was the way to break into the West when the western market has always had a thing for classic pop.

mic drop barely classifies as the noise music most groups are putting out. i liked it from the get go and noisy music ain’t my thing. HYLT is a little edgy with the chorus but blackpink were big and popular enough to sell that at that time

I never understood this sentiment at all. Local music is 1000x more generic, more repetitive, more simplistic, more stripped down than Kpop.
Just listen to this trash, 2 minute ads masquerading as songs with -100 musicality. Compared to this collection of noise, a song like OMG or Cupid would be a 20 out of 10, not the 8 or 9 out of 10s that they actually are. I've already put up Heatwave a dozen times so here are some other noise sounds coming from the US.

I think It's just beyond music. It's
money, opportunities, marketing, timing, lucky, image, charisma, star power etc..For example, Stray Kids has the most well distributed and consistent global popularity in 4th Generation, including western market, doing the type of music people clarify as noise and what you think It might not be a good way to follow. But they did and successfully. It doesn't mean every group will reach their status doing similar.
It's the same for NewJeans and, to some extent, Fifty Fifty because of Cupid. Not every group doing simple pop music to bop to will be as popular.
-
-
I think it's because like in the early 3rd gen, the only concepts people could fathom were cute concept, sexy concept (which was dying), and girl crush. Obviously of the three, girl crush appealed to western audiences most. And then Blackpink got popular domestically and overseas so everybody wanted to follow their formula to become successful.

you're on to something here. kpop has a tendency to lock down on a trend and do it to death, cause idk, inertia? best a group can do is be the one to start trends and not get bogged down following them
the latency gap between western trends and kpop versions has dropped dramatically since girl crush started tbf
-
you may not consider it noise, but the noise music groups were putting out were heavily influenced by bts and bp, and still are. if groups like exo and red velvet were the predominant ones in the west, or twice and seventeen, the most common type of music released in kpop would be very different for groups that wanted to hit big in the west.

Glass Animals have a really solid discography and are skilled musicians and Heat Waves have beautiful, sad and relatable lyrics, it's like Cupid but even better sound. Generic maybe, but there's good reason why it was a hit.

the random Heat Waves trashing is so funny to me, like cmon dude those guys can cook
they're also from the UK...

Noise music is fine. The problem is when they push the wrong songs in the west.
The feels charted on BB because it’s a catchy pop song.
JYP started pushing Itzy in the west with their most controversial songs.
Boys like you is actually a catchy pop song but it’s not a good song at all. Some companies just struggle.

What songs do u guys even consider noise i genuinely want to know

It's called "noise music" for a reason. It's just noise. It's bad music.

NCT127's sound was always considered risky for both kcharts and international charts, doesnt really apply to op's definition of "noise music that wanted to succeed in west". Ateez is a bg obviously inspired by BTS. To me its pretty obvious the main groups responsible for the trend of noisy music where singers shout with heavy, loud instrumentals are BTS and BP, as they were the most influent at that time, Mic Drop and HYLT being prime examples of noisy music where the singers shout and the instrumental is loud af.

if BP and BTS did sound noisy for their time I accept that, but both broadened their sound and found more success.
OP talks about the other groups that doubled down on the noise and ALSO tried to pull a BP/BTS Western approach. It's about that dissonance in approach (pun intended). Does that make sense?
-
My fave Not Today is like underrated because its considered as noise music..Its rarely mentioned in discussions..
BTS solo projects Like Crazy and Left & Right have been on spotify global chart for months because majority of ARMYs rn are pop listeners...Dynamite wouldn't spend 2 years on Spotify chart if not for the genre.

you made sense, I understand what you mean. I think it's very understandable that other kpop companies tried to do the same with groups too though, even if they failed to do it in a proper way, it made sense they tried to hit big in the west by using a similar formula.

I think we only panic if top groups like BP & twice & skz & 17 suddenly do a U-turn with their next CBs lol

They make noise music to make it to the west? No, they want easy and safe cash grab, that's why they release noise music. You got this slightly wrong. Songs dont have to be coherent as long as the song has the beats.
List of some songs before 4th gen that make it to BBHot100:
Nobody WG
BTS songs
BP songs
2 Twice songs
2NE1 or BigBang might have one, but that's just YGE being good at noise music
Now you add Cupid and New Jeans songs, the trend of making it to the west is definitely NOT noise music.
-
Bro, in this day and age kids have grown so sensitive that anything louder than a mumble, a chant or an ASMR whisper is considered "noise" music. People want Old Town Road chanting with a basic trap beat and that's it.
The minute you try to make it interesting and layer in extra synths, extra percussion, extra bass, electric guitar sounds, anything that makes a song actually sound good and gives it, you know, real NOTES and CHORDS and CHORD PROGRESSIONS, anything with real musicality, the kids will turn it off and call it "noise".
By this definition, all the BTS songs you listed are "noisy"
-
If it all became boring nothing stuff like that I'd be out of kpop...

BlackpinkHouse tried to warn us of this
Imma support mah girl Natty but boy oh boy the entire comeback for Kiss of Life was a frame by frame rehash of New Jeans, from the rollout schedule to the MV concepts all the way down to the RnB inspired music.
Comparing Kiss of Life debut with the debuts of Itzy and Aespa for example, it's like the groups are living in two different planets Itzy and Aespa were Big 3 responses to DDDD, while Kiss of Life, Triple S, and multiple other debuts and comebacks were reactions to NJ sweeping success.

the form is similar but at least they sound different, thats what matters
