If they are debuting a new GG this year as promised with half a dozen new members they want to promote then there's no reason to believe that particular line up will come back again, if the backlash doesn't shelve the whole concept. There's no reason to point to Hybe for any of that.

Not SJ, they are popular in SEA and have big Japanese and Latin America fanbase. They have huge tours.

-NCT 127 and dream generate the most revenue for SM for the last few years due to album sales and touring (127 especially).

-Red velvet is still growing having recently reached 1 million sales for an album, is well respected in the industry and can always be relied on for GP hits.

-Aespa sold 1.6 million with the girls album

-Super junior sells well as a group + has a dedicated fandom that shows up to concerts, their individual activities such as variety also generate a lot of revenue. TVXQ also generates huge touring income in Japan and shinee is shinee. They aren't going anywhere.

The group with an unstable footing and least successful is wayv. This is due to factors outside their control but they are the only ones in peril of disbandment with new management.

Soloists is a very broad category - Taeyeon, Baekhyun are certainly not in the same conversation as Kangta for example.

Overall, It's probably The Grace - after S.E.S, SM tried to debut other ggs (like Milk), but they existed for just a few years, there wasn't a vision for them.

However, The Grace were marketed as the female version of TVXQ, SM tried to give them trendy music and all, but the timing was off (they started to promote in japan when they started to gain momentum in korea) and the group wasn't what the korean general public wanted anyways.

For the active groups It's very hard to say which group is less popular, after 2007-8, SM got too big to fail and every single group got famous overall

I’d say SNSD? I don’t think they’re making that much money as a group right. They don’t tour so they’re a liability. Currently they bring value via their individual promotions and not much as a group.

Sure solos from group members can also be seen as “less popular” liability but if these solos can be performed at the group concerts and improve the fandom of the group as a whole then it’s fine.

I think any act which can’t tour/sell albums is “less popular”. This doesn’t mean individual members don’t have other value but just that since the context is disbanding of groups, I’m looking at the profit avenues that can justify the existence of the group.

I don't really think Sm has a group that could be axed because they aren't that popular.

TVXQ probably has the least popularity overall but they can hold massive tours (biggest tour makers in SM?) if needs be. It'd be silly for SM to simply drop potential revenue. Same situation with suju too.

They successful had a CB that did very well outcharing almost every gg during a very competitive summer battle including Aespa, getting some of the highest ratings on every TV show they appeared on, their fastest selling Korean album (that SM didn't restock as usual) and sell out a fan meet.

That's a for group that that's been already inactive for 5 years prior and will be for as long as 3 members aren't part of SM, soa CB obviously won't be a regular occurrence at all. For all intents and purposes they're a disbanded SM group for years already. If a group can survive for that long without input/CB then how are they a liability? It's quite the opposite, it shows SNSD are so popular they're able to survive on brand name alone in a dormant state and don't need SM to continually invest in them meaning SM can put focus on newer groups or ventures instead.

They're not an active group so their group activities (oh!gg) costs are basically nothing (only season's greetings + anniversary merch). For their reunion they sold out KSPO dome (biggest venue for girl groups), and there were plans to tour but some of the member were too busy (basically the entire actress line was promoting or shooting for a project)

If you don’t tour you are a liability as a musical act. There’s no doubt about it.

“They aren’t active as group” thats why I said that in the first place. SM does not see their brand as a source of revenue while instead they capitalize on their individual careers and popularity.

I think ppl are taking what I said way too personally. Lol. I just pointed out SNSD don’t promote as a musical act since they don’t tour. It’s just a fact.

It would indeed be a PR nightmare.
