Why do girl groups sing so high in kpop?

I think that some of them naturally have high pitched voices. But in particular, a higher pitched voice typically gives a brighter sound, which is synonymous with alot of pop.

Probably due to their register. I have had my voice trained and I was a natural soprano and didn't have a good low register.

Probably. If you listen to most female pop singers, you can hear that most of them are in the upper range vocally.

Any pop singers in a lower range (at least in the west) are regarded as more soulful.

I don't think it's as prevalent as before, is it? Newer groups sound nothing like IZ*ONE.

You not alone, that’s one of the reason I don’t really listen girl groups. I’m very picky with female voices, I don’t like high note battles. I wish female groups would sing in normal range. I remember listening a girl group from Japan and some of the girls had deeper husky voices. It sounded great and they didn’t try to sing high at all. It created a nice balance between them and the higher toned girls.

Flashback to my shock after I heard Lee Youngji singing voice. Beautiful, but she mostly raps.

I also prefer lower voices, I remember what drawn me to BTS at first was Yoongi and Tae's voices in Dope

This is where good vocal technique helps. Singing with all the style you like hinders/hurts at the upper range. Typically you would hear singers pull back their stylistic flairs as they belt in the upper ranges.

I'm not a great singer so take my knowledge with a grain of salt.

I feel like 4h gen GGs have been forced less and less to strain their voices and sing unnaturally high as opposed to 3rd gen GGs who had that as almost a default sound with plenty of groups. Some girls have naturaly cutesie and high voices, but for a lot you could tell they were told to sing like that. I don't doubt some have damage.

It really depends on the song IMO. For example that Baekhyun high note in that one super m song what’s it even called I forgot, it just wasn’t it. And it’s the same thing for lower registers. I really find it hard to listen to some stray kids songs because of when that dude comes on with his baritone voice.

I feel like very high notes and very low notes have their place when it suits the songs.

Generally tho high notes are much more pleasing than very low notes for me at least. But it would all depend on how it’s incorporated really at the end of the day.

i guess that's why BP songs are more well liked cause they're easier on ears.

Though personally I do like certain songs with higher pitch e.g. AOA heart attack, most of Sistar songs where only Hyolyn can sing, Aespa's songs (this is personal preference as I like Winter's vocal)

I though best 4gen vocalists is probably aespa. Which is good. Similar to twice jihyo or Brave Girls minyoung. But to me its not that 4th add something in the vocal department that 3rd Gen didnt deliver. For me 4th.gen is more about adding a lot of performance. Like doing 5 backflips through a ring of fire while hitting the high Note.

But im curious. can you explain where you see the recent development in vocals?

U didnt follow doesnt mean there is no good 4th gen vocalist. Winter and Ningning (like u mentioned), Lily, Haewon, Monday, Sieun, Yunjin

I knkw Soyou is decent but she is so much less stable during performance. And her airy-styled vocal is very hard to project / find support during live performance, unlike Hyolyn.

Imo Lily is better. She has more control and range and also super stable even when dancing. Plus her vocal is rich.

As a whole, i think NMIXX is one of the group in term of vocals alongside aespa

Ah thanks. Thats interesting. I havend seen much from nmixx. Maybe because of me. I didnt leally liked their debute song. What activities are they doing since debute?

It feels like they went unser the table compared to Lesserafim, ive, gidle and newjeans.

Yeah, I prefer normal (lower) voices. I really hate high cutesy singing.

The is why I vibe with Aespa's ICU and not their TT. No straining voices (screeching), just nice music from talented singers.

Just usual idol activities. The major one were K-CON premiere Seoul and Chicago, KBS summer special, Dream Concert, and Seoul Music Festa. Also K-CON LA later.

You can tell Lily and Haewon are best vocalists in 4th gen just by listening to these live performances, without autotune or backtrack.
