So Hobi finally released his first song to mark his official solo debut post mixtape
Wow there are a lot of things to digest from the music video to the music itself and to the lyrics. So I’ll divide my review into 3 parts.
MUSIC
J Hope really said he’s doing something different and he didn’t lie. This was far from what I expected. I honestly thought he was gonna do something similar to 1Verse. But this is different. It’s a sound I haven’t heard from BTS before.
First the song starts with this chill old hip hop beat, then the bass kicks in and Hobi goes into this deep grungy tone. This beat consistently hits heavier and louder then it suddenly fans out at the pre chorus where Hobi switches to this desperate eerie growl with his vocal fried at the end(That was so good!)
Then out of nowhere the genre changes to grungy rock. Wow! Hobi was taking me on a roller coaster and I was loving every second of it.
There’s barely anything to nitpick about the beat. My only peeve was that I would loved for the ending to be at the screaming chorus with the guitar and drums leaving a lasting impression as everything ends. But that’s alright. The production is still a 10/10
LYRICS
First of all, Hobi’s flow was sick. The first verse was simple and more punchy but the 2nd verse has to have my favorite lines.
Hobi talks about learning how to rap on his own, and we all know that it is true. He only got tips from the rapline but everything else, he soaked it up as he moved along. BTS are still as passionate with their music and they don’t let us ever forget this. J Hope also gives us a peek of how greedy he can be with his art. As he said he wants everything that comes with it. He also explained how he knows the setbacks and negatives attached to the accolades and fame but he still wants it. And his alter ego(which I will explain in the mv section) keeps hammering it in.
However at the end of the day, he still believes he hasn’t gotten there yet. He is not enough. He wants to evolve and this may be our first glimpse at Hobi mentioning how he said he wants to break out of a mold.
My only issue may have been the chorus. It fell a bit flat and empty but it’s ok. After listening to the song a few times, the chorus has grown on me.
Lyrics: 9/10
MUSIC VIDEO
A disclaimer that this is just my own interpretation so I may not be correct at all. Pardon me
So it starts in a walkway. Idk about everyone but the doors reminded me of an asylum or a prison. It gives me the impression of solitude. That whatever journey Hobi is about to embark on, he has to do it alone.
Then when he receives the box and opens it, his alter ego unleashed. The camera pans out as Hobi sings “eenie meenie minnie mo” and Jack pops out behind him standing next to the wall.
And just as we saw, Jack is reckless. He’s rowdy. He’s greedy. He’s raw. And he doesn’t care about what people think. He reminds me off a Nightmare. And since we already had Daydream, it kinda has a nice ring to it to see Hobi in another light.
Then at the end of the video, Hobi closes the box. And surprisingly the box contains all the rooms he rapped in including the office, the room with the Album and vinyls, his own room and the infirmary. That made me think that those places aren’t part of his reality. And we may have just been taking glimpses at Hobi’s mind and his inner self. Hobi really left me wanting more and I can’t wait to see how the rest of his album goes
Overall the concept was well done and the video is just as interesting as the song itself.
