If you didn't like your fave's cb, would you still support it?

  • Would you buy it? Stream it? Do you feel like you could be honest about how you felt about it in threads here? Would you vote for it to win awards?

Speaking of voting, please vote for MX to get a badge for Rush Hour in the linked thread if you like them (Or like me. Or just want me to stop talking about it. LOL)

  • no

    i wouldnt buy it

i wouldnt say I liked it on the internet

I legit borderline stopped talking about twice cause they disappointed me for 4 comebacks straight in a row

i still love the girls but no im not throwing fake praise

  • well, im the type who likes almost all the songs i heard so a song must really suck so bad for me to dislike it. out of all the kpop songs this year, there was only 1 song i disliked and couldn't finish lol

if it was my ult, i wont say it during the comeback period but probably a few months later in a confession thread lol, but honestly most songs i hate on the first listen grows on me so i usually dont have this problem

  • Yeah, sometimes I wonder if people can tell that I don't like something because I'm usually so vocal about the things I do love. I used to like to discuss a comeback even if I didn't like it, coz I love talking about my faves and me simply not enjoying one tt is not going to lessen that love overall, but I learned others aren't like that. I don't want to dampen someone else's joy.

  • this kind of happened to me with Love Shot lol, but I loved the b-sides and the song is fine I guess, so I supported it anyway. I honestly can't even imagine EXO putting out a song that I straight up disliked, let alone a whole album full of songs like that though. Tbh in that situation I probably would somehow brainwash myself into liking it if I had to guess. I just love the interplay of their voices and harmonies so much so I feel like just that being there would be enough to trick myself into at least liking it.

  • I dont try to categorize whether i like a cb within the first week/ first month usually

Mots 7 was my first cb and the songs i liked more at first listen are lower down my list right now 😆

So i dont have to pretend because i dont try to categorize at all lol

Oh, that's a good point. I've definitely had my initial opinions change. For example, I didn't like Fantasia for months, but weirdly fell in love with it when MX released the Japanese version. Now I listen to both versions all the time and it's one of my fave tracks.

  • To an extent, I disliked DCM but I still listened to the album, watched all the lives and would relisten to the song to see if it liked it more occasionally tho I also did this because they havnt cb in so long so if had been their repack I wouldnt have tried to convince myself I like the song - luckily Atlantis is great so no worries lol

And that goes for most acts I stan, if I dont like the song ill give a few more listens to see if my opinion was too harsh and I still watch most lives/promo

  • I would’ve no problem saying I don’t like it but I would still buy the album. I’m a completionist and having a collection of anything that is missing stuff would bother me to no end. Plus the photocards. Kpop fans have gone so crazy when it comes to pricing that sometimes it’s cheaper to buy the album and trade than attempt to buy the cards you want on their own.

So you collect photocards? Would you be in favor of kpop moving away from physicals and just selling digital albums, but selling photocards and other merch separately?

  • Tbh I don't stream a lot even if I like the song, I lack time and energy to do so. As for the songs I don't like, I'd still watch the live performances and whatnot. For the physical releases, I buy the cd if i like more than 50% of the songs, I don't collect photocards and there's no point in me buying something just to sit on the shelf.

  • No. I'm not going to go around shitting on it either (unless it's somehow objectionably awful), but I'm not going to promote it or spend money on it.

This reminds me of something GD had said once about how his popularity had gotten to a level that he could take a shit, and still rake in the money and accolades. Forcing yourself to pretend to like shit is how stuff like that happens, and then people will have the audacity to complain about the lazy efforts the company puts in, lmao. (Much respect to GD that he even admitted that; not many celebrities want to admit that their fame has reached a level where quality is no longer required to be successful.)

If I don't like a song, I won't listen to it or buy it(I can't really buy it lol).

I didn't like Film Out the first day I listened to it and only viewed it once and lowkey refused to listen to it lol. I heard it again a few days later through a video that had it as bg music and I started liking it. (Now I love it lol, so I guess it grew on me).

But there are songs that I will never support in my entire life in any shape or form(cough cough on ft sia and d4 remix)

  • I think in terms of songs, not CB, which to me is more about the title track.

I will still buy and stream the other songs if I like them. I never force myself to support or buy songs I don’t like. That doesn’t make sense to me. I like my bias because of what they produce, not the other way around.

If I don’t like it I will say a couple things initially, but I move on with my life and wait for the next release. I don’t tend to dwell on things I don’t like. I’m too busy for that

    Exactly this lmao

  • nah. i'm pretty open about disliking certain twice songs. i might still buy the album if i liked the theme. and i never aggressively stream songs, even if i really like it. i listen to music when i want to, not because i feel obligated to lol

Oh, I like that too. I think it's a widely-held belief that if something is popular, it must be good, but that's not necessarily true. Just like it's easier to get more money if you have money, it's also easier to reach higher levels of popularity once you are already popular. It has to be tempting to rest on your laurels a bit.

  • Like just the title track? Or the whole album?

I usually buy albums months after the fact so that part isn't really relevant, but in terms of streaming if I didn't like the title track I wouldn't stream it much. Maybe a couple of times spread out to see if I really didn't like it or if I was just disappointed it didn't meet my expectations. Same with the album. Even with B side songs I don't like now, I revisit in a week, a month, two months time to see if I still don't like it.

I'd still support the group and hope for them to be successful even if I don't like it because I'm not the only person in the fandom that matters. I wouldn't lie and say I liked it, I'd just say I was disappointed/didn't like it and then move on to hyping up the things I did like about the comeback (even if it's just a photoshoot, youtube promotion, or variety appearance).

True. Some songs will pbly always be a skip, but others grow to make us eat our words lol

The expectations thing is a good point. I think I have been overly hard on certain songs simply because I loved the previous cb so much that the new one had little chance of measuring up. But then, after I got used to it, I could love both on their own merits.

And yes, usually there are other things to hype and love. That's a beauty of kpop.

Expectations were definitely my case with two particular comebacks from groups I like this year, Astro's After Midnight and Seventeen's Rock With You. Both felt like letdowns because I had a certain thing in mind that didn't happen. Now months later, I've grown to enjoy both songs quite a bit.

I feel like that's the case for most people who find themselves hating a song and then loving it later... it's not that they hated it per say, it's just that it was probably different than they expected and once they manage that expectation then they find themselves liking the song.

  • Nope. (my brain doesn’t work I hope I can explain this right)-> I only call a group my favourite when I like majority if not all of their song. Everything else is casual listening.

If they next comeback is not for me, I will say it, don’t stream it or buy it but still listen their previous albums. And hope that the next album will be something I like or I wouldn’t be able to enjoy them as much as i did before. I would go back to their older songs but personally I tend to loose interest in a group if their music is no longer my taste.

  • Do you feel like your fandom is pretty accepting when it comes to fans expressing a negative opinion?

idk i've never personally had any issues but i feel like kpop fandoms as a whole have a hard time accepting negative opinions or criticisms from other fans especially. like how dare you not blindly praise anything and everything your faves do...even if it's not great

Yeah, I've seen that. Some will accuse you of being a "fake fan" or they just won't acknowledge you as a fan cuz you're "throwing the group under the bus".

  • No. If I didn't like the lead single I wouldn't keep watching it, if I didn't like the b sides I wouldn't buy the album.

This actually happened with Golcha once with Ddara. Sure I like ddara, not its b side though. I only got the album since its a repackage and I don't have the original album.

So you liked the added tracks for the repackage? (And man, when I started listening to kpop, I didn't realize all the stuff I would have to learn, including what repackaged are. I was so confused trying to figure out discographies lol)

The original tracks. The original album is called game changer and is more thought-out than ddara (imo ddara is quite rushed)

and ikr?! The terms of comeback and single album, mini album, repackage are so hard to get swirling in my mind, it's insane how many terms kpop fans have in this genre

  • A little bit of both. I don't buy physicals for anyone any more, but I have purchased solos from my ult group to support them, even if I'm not sure I'm going to like the album from the prerelease because I want to support them in their solo work. If I didn't care for that first solo release, I'm not going to buy their solos moving forward unless they come out with something that appeals to me. If I don't care for it, I'm not streaming it...

As for voicing my opinion if I don't care for it, I think I learned some lessons about that recently and you have to read the room - sometimes people just want to celebrate and enjoy and you can bring down the mood with a criticism when you could have just shut up and took that opinion somewhere else. There's usually a space (or an appropriate time) where people want to hear all sides (positive and negative), so you just have to pay attention to where you are when you speak. Ngl, it's a learning process for me tho.
