Fandoms should take a page from ARMYS' playbook

  • There are outliers and anomalies here and there, but for the most part, ARMYS portray BTS members as strong, independent men capable of making their own decisions. They won't blame the company and cry about "mistreatment" if a member doesn't have a solo project. Instead, they respect what the members choose whether it's style, dating, tattoos, or anything else.

I feel like this way of portraying BTS has benefitted the group positively, as it challenges harmful stereotypes and makes them seem more credible as artists.

More fandoms should adopt this strategy.

I feel like the constant infantilization of idols actually does more harm than good. People cry mistreatment when their bias in a group doesn't get a solo project even if the particular idol might not even want a solo. People essentially push for a heavier workload for their favorites even if the members might have other obligations or need a break. They put pressure on the company to give them what they want, neglecting the members' feelings and well-being. This potentially causes burnout and affects the group's longevity.

Meanwhile ARMYS are cool with whatever they get thanks to one simple mindset:

"Whatever BTS decides, I'll respect and support."

This makes it easier for the members to coordinate their solo projects and group projects while also maintaining a healthy work-life balance. They also feel TRUE support from their fans instead of feeling like they're only there to give in to fans' demands.

  • is it really true though? I saw so many tweets on twitter claiming HYBE/Bang mistreat V and Jin

As I said... anomalies and outliers. The majority of ARMYS don't infantilize the members, not even their bias member.

I feel like complaining about mistreatment when it's not there does a disservice to the group's chemistry. It puts the members in an awkward spot, which potentially affects their morale in the long run. It makes members question whether or not the company is actually mistreating them, and that messes with the group dynamic.

  • This is so funny. :pepe-joy:

*Jin has been asked countless of times why he doesn't do k-dramas or acting projects that he had to address it.

*J-hope had to release a physical version of his album because ARMYs complained about having only a digital/weverse album.

*The fans who felt vindicated that JK, the maknae of the group, would be making songs about having it seven days a week.

    *And others

Idk. How I view ARMYs changed after seeing how they can throw the members under the bus.

  • When it comes to normal kpop fans, Armys aren’t special, no fandom is. All sane fans will do all the things you mentioned, and only the crazy ones will make a big deal out of nothing. So, if we’re talking about the typical kpop fans you see online, Armys are no different, in fact maybe even worse. I can even think a few already in my head.

And the fact that the fandom is now popularly referred to as "Boys' Moms", and yet you think they’re different from other fandoms and not infantilizing the group is even more laughable. And Supporting the boys dating? The boys never had confirmed relationships for a reason, honey. Lucky for Bts, Dispatch has their back. That whole rumor about Jennie paying a model to cosplay as V spread so much in the fandom that new fans actually believe it’s true. That's how crazy they're.

  • It is enough that they are from Hybe, I am sure the fandom makes a minimal contribution to the popularity of the group, I think the main contribution comes from Hybe. Streaming, news articles about BTS, discussions on forums, the recent leak of information only confirmed the fact that Hybe's main focus is on the media space. The fandom is only proud of its achievements on different platforms, or whines about oppression.

  • I mean, they've had a lot of cb and group variety shows + their company brags about every credit the boys get (no matter how small)

If only my girls agency could do the same, they even do a VLive in secret...

  • Many akp armys have a healthy attitude but army as whole does not, sadly. Still I do think we should respect the choices of idols as much as they try to respect the feedback of fans. (At least Bts does try to keep in touch with the wishes of armys, Jin for example went to the talk shows armys recommended.)

  • It is interesting to note though which users are bothered by any kind of praise for any of the armys. Those users are great examples of toxic fan culture. 😞

Just to note it, army is slowly becoming an older fandom. A lot of fandoms will grow up with time. Most fans had gone through failure, success, ridicule, toxicity, fandom wars and etc. with Bts. We had times when Bts had to make their boundaries clear, so many members of the fandom matured, some did not. But I think the better ones learned to respect the members and accept their way of promoting or dealing with their careers.

No, that's still ARMY, the most toxic fandom in K-Pop history. I was content to leave meme images and go about my day, but we can have a real tea spill party if you actually want to deflect attention to other fandoms, as if ARMY aren't actively slut shaming, doxxing, mass retweeting misogynistic Zionists and even sending death threats on a daily basis.

And then have the audacity to cry about people having no empathy for Suga after his legitimate crime.

ARMY have been the biggest stain on all of K-Pop fandom this year, and I don't give a shit about the one or two good apples, since the whole bunch is spoiled and rotten, a festering and decaying monstrosity of oppalogists and company sycophants.

Congratulations. Your comment has re-ignited just how much I despise your fandom. AKP ARMY should thank you.

  • now I can't stop using ChatGPT to answer stuff because of y'all:

The most toxic fandom on the allkpop forums is often cited as the Army fandom. While they are recognized for their immense passion and dedication to BTS, there are instances of toxic behavior from certain individuals within the group. This has led to negative perceptions among some users. However, it’s crucial to emphasize that these toxic behaviors do not represent the entire fandom; most Army members are positive and supportive. Every fandom typically consists of a diverse range of personalities, including both constructive voices and those prone to negativity. Therefore, it's essential to approach these discussions with a balanced perspective and recognize that generalizations may not accurately reflect the behavior of all fans.

  • I really don't know much about Army, I'm not on twitter and mostly pay attention to the groups I follow. But what you described should really be a norm in all fandom, ideally. The fans should respect idols' decisions and understand that there are things going on behind the scenes we know nothing about until they're officially announced. And unless there's an open proof of mistreatment, we should not assume anything.

It's really not good when idols feel pressured to do something or act a certain way, just to appease the fans. But I guess that's how it is, most of the time.

  • The only thing I will take lesson from army was their join attempt to collect donation to support Palestine, and that other things during BLM or any country issue, under the name of BTS.

Too bad BSH take their potential and shit on them by sending money to paid lavish style of himself and Hybe America CEO.

And shame for RM too to give the big FU for his fans who relentlessly donate under his group name.

It's hard to blame them when they're also victims of toxic Armys here. Some of them are Tokkis, and from recent events, we all know how disgusting a lot of Armys have been towards Nj to protect hybe. They were even so loud here a few months ago, trying to blame the girls, call them pedos while trying to belittle every Nj fans here. Luckily, we don’t have many of them lurking here anymore for some reason. Now, imagine someone rubbing it in those users' faces, saying they should take notes from a fandom that becomes the biggest bullies to their faves and even them here. There's no way they gonna take it.

  • lidora 💜 You tried but we see how this thread turned out…

Nobody feels sorry for you. Miss me with the victim cosplay. Your fandom has been a toxic cesspool for months now, responsible for some of the most disgustingly shameful bullying I've seen in years, and I'm tired of you ARMY handwaving it away like MAJORITY of the chronically online segments of your fandom don't act like this.

I can go to reddit or even the AKP main site right now and easily post many, many examples of exactly what I described.

I will not sit quietly and watch you people try to downplay the LOUD toxic MAJORITY that is your fandom's online presence.

  • Just to note it, army is slowly becoming an older fandom.

If you don't do as top BTS army tyrant accounts tell you to do you are not "army" even if you were BTS member yourself. You will be spit on, insulted, ridiculed and bashed.

  • I laughed, respectfully, but I laughed.

Armys aren't a good example to follow in a dating scandal and I think Jennie slut shame and "cute nickname" tooooon of armys love to call her "seoul cycle" shows it.

Armys aren't good example of no complains towards the company as an army gave the example here with them complaining so much that the members are obligated to do things just to satisfy their crazy narratives bc they are crazy about numbers and stats when some BTS members just want to deliver their music and end.

And no, I'm not generalizating, I do see super nice armys, here in akp we have several!! But a fandom as big as them.. nope, they can't be a good example, not with how they act even towards others armys that don't "follow" their rules.

I think you, supersim, has this weird kink in wanting to be positive and trying to create positive things about fandoms :meme-side-eye: let's just say this isn't your best content :meme-overly-attached:

But I think armys are the best in supporting their faves, they are super open about real discussion on their music like they go deep analysing every lyric, concept, etc, this is nice, they really appreciate their faves releases and are respectful even with the songs they don't really like, they are great at creating campaign to help social issues, which is super super nice and praiseworthy. They value what BTS does and specially here in akp, I see that they treat the boys like human beings and this is nice.

Like if I ask armys to recommend me some BTS songs that has the same vibes as INY or Fire or any other song they'll give me plenty of choices and some will go as far as explaining all the b t s process which is amazing!

So while the examples you gave are wrong imo, I do think armys are good examples in some cases.

    That's it, i don't want to fight :exit-pepe:

  • I'm well aware of the behavior of some self-proclaimed Armys in response to dating rumors involving a BTS member. I've spoken up against this, making it clear I think it's hypocritical of them to praise BTS for philanthropic and activist endeavors while they (the toxic "Armys") engage in toxic behavior that opposes what BTS stands for.

I will always call out that hypocrisy because I think it's the most ironic thing in all of stan culture – the performative activism and virtue signaling while simultaneously engaging in toxic behavior that does more harm than good to society.

Whether or not they are truly Armys as constituted by the values and principles of BTS is up for debate, but I don't want to get into that at the moment. That's subjective anyway.

However, I like looking at the good side of things and giving credit where it's due. There are sensible Armys who operate much differently, and I think there's something we can learn from them.

  • Nope, it's armys. You'll prove yourselves in a largin scale when NJs gets out of Hybe. And tbh, this isn't a competition. Armys almost alone made BTS the top kpop artist in the whole world. In this sense they are great.

No, it's us and it's not even close really. ARMY trend useless hashtags on Twitter and threaten boycotts.

We got their shady ass company executives summoned to the National Assembly, and we've even filed criminal lawsuits against them.

    We are not the same.
