i just really cannot believe they won't get an exemption. i mean, it's korean matter and i have no say in it but i just can't get it
I imagine the people who don't support it (the military committee specifically) sees it as a slippery slope. Once you expand the exemption for X achievement, then what about Y achievement, then why is it just celebrities? And it just snowballs into calls for having conscription repealed which they can't really afford.
Voluntary military enlistment is way down in lots of countries and I've seen calls to bring back conscription even in the US every time an article is posted about how no one wants to join the military.

Honestly in my view of it, I think they are hoping that k-entertainment keeps it's level of visibility on the international market and continues to grow so they can have their soft power cake and eat it too. If the industry builds itself up enough that they can keep the majority of their market foothold without too much of a financial impact, then they'll have them enlist and get their "look at our good citizens sacrificing their place to serve the greater good" propaganda.

i get that it's a messy and complicated situation but what they've achieved most likely no one ever will.
is voluntary enlistment still a thing? if i were a man i'd never voluntarily enlist, why waste a year or few of my life. only mandatory enlistement or professional army makes sense to me

Voluntary enlistment is indeed still a thing and it's down because people realized you actually don't need to join the military to get out of wherever you live. When men turn 18 they have to register for selective service because if war is officially declared they can instate a draft, but honestly when I was in high school 15 years ago it was way easier for guys to take welding, carpentry, or masonry at the technical college because they were 12-18 month programs and they usually helped with career placement so you can get hired on a crew and get out of the crappy small town I grew up in way faster than enlisting.

The age limit for normal people is 28. The law is that you have to enlist in 1 year since you turn 28. That means before you turn 29.
Example : Baekhyun of EXO. Baekhyun turned 28 in May 2020. He enlisted in May 2021 because that is the date before he had to enlist.
Just like Jin. He turned 28 on the 4th December 2020 so he had to enlist before the 4th December 2021 if not for 'BTS law'.
Now with 'BTS law', Jin's age limit is 30. He will turn 30 on the 4th December 2022. So he will have to enlist before the 4th December 2023 because of 'BTS law'.
I hope all the ARMYs read and remember this. Jin doesn't have to enlist till 4th December 2023. Calculate for other BTS members with their birthdays. But you won't need to think about it alot. Because BTS will get an exemption in the next 2 years. For sure.

I agree, it should be Dec 2023 for Jin so I am confused why media is saying 1 year. As per past precedents, he technically should get 2 full years which is before he turns 31.

Media more often than not don't collect the full information about the news they're reporting. They are always very eager to report the news as soon as they can. So they only create abstract of what the news is in the beginning. After reporting the news, then they start collecting full detailed information.
