Idol Group Hits vs. Regular Hits

  • Hi, I was inspired by salem9 to make this post. She mentioned that "idol group hits" are much easier to get than regular hits in South Korea, so I took it upon myself to see just how big the difference in size actually is. I'm only using digital points since they're the most recent metric we have at our disposal.
I knew her assumption was going to be correct, but the actual gap of ~483 million points is…..wow. To get into the top 100 of the full chart, you need 642,974,208 digital points. To get into the top 100 of the idol group chart, you need 159,598,722 digital points!
K-pop fans really do lower the mark of "hit" for idol group songs, because the difference between the two chart is stark, to say the least. Out of the top 100 idol group songs, as of March 4, 2021, only 23 are in the top 100 of the overall chart. 23% is less than 1/4 of these songs ("Dolphin" entering next week will make it 24%, but the "> 1/4" point still holds true).
NOTE: This is not to drag any group or song, these are numerical values. If you are pressed by numbers, log off and save everyone valuable time. Thank you in advance.

  • I'm actually surprised that some English songs are charting higher than idol songs in Korea. Makes sense now as to why Dynamite was received well among the Korean GP despite being an English song.

Interestingly, bad guy by Billie Eilish is in the top 20 songs w/ most digital points, at #19.

  • This is to be expected, since Koreans don't listen solely to idol groups.

I said as much in the OP.

I made this thread to show just how large the digital gap is between the popular soloists, indie bands, duos, etc. compare "popular" idol groups.

  • Wow - this is great and I can tell a lot of work. Since I was just bitching about it generally in another thread, I really appreciate that you've also included your methodology and context here (i.e. using digital points as the most recent metric).

this actually took me longer than i thought it would. I just hope i got everything correct lol.

  • Is it possible to add the group name next to song too omg I’m a flop I don’t know these song names eye- I just wanted to count how many entries per group.

  • Op how about older hits such as pwf,cu,tt,bst, aiiyl etc

Those are before gaon points are invented.

Those were running with numbers of downloads and streams

Edit: AIIYL 2nd half run is based on gaon points. So it is impressive that it hit 460m+ with 2nd jalf run only. (Same with red flavor)

Is it possible for it to surpass 600 by this year

  • Puts a lot of things in perspective. Thanks Massive and worldlove27!
