He's grown in popularity since his dumb scandal that happened that made no sense, and how he had to sit out of all of Kingdom. Stays were pissed about all that shit so of course they supported him and talks about him were everywhere. he's extremely talented, but as a huge 4th gen fan, i am not going to agree that he's an "it" boy. there's so many talented amazing artists out there in 4th gen alone that could be an "it" boy with equal popularity. That's just my 2 cents.
I see so much hype and threads devoted to this young fella. I feel like his name recognition and popularity among Stays and Kpop fans in general has put him just a tier under the very top of BG idols, just below the likes of the most popular BTS and EXO idols and a few other superstars and legends like GD, Daniel Kang, etc. I feel like he's already equalled or surpassed even other 3rd gen It Boys like Mingyu and Eunwoo.
So amirite? Is Hyunjin the unquestioned It Boy of his generation?
YES
But Yeonjun is also an It Boy in my heart. 
I don't like the tag 'It Boy', I don't think It's a real term not even popularly used for real well known It Boys like Kang Daniel or Eunwoo. It's not like the term 'It Girl' that is real. I only use as a meme to hype Hyunjin.
But I think he definitely is popular on his own and know how to catch people's attention.
There's articles about how his hair became trend on Korea and people go on Hair/Beauty Salon (I don't know If I'm saying right in english, It's not my first language) asking to try ' Stray Kids' Hyunjin's hair', Allure Korea actually wrote about it.
There are idols who have said they wanted to try 'Hyunjin sunbaenim's hair' and a couple of rookies has been mentioning recently him as a role model. People from his own generation!
His Psycho fancam blew up with non-fans on YouTube, Naver and Weibo (It's probably the biggest SKZ viral there after Thunderous on Douyin).
He has countless fancams with million views easily.
I know this is not the most relevant measure and only K-pop fans care about it like the Brand Reputation (that he charts every month too), but he was the only 4th gen idol on Top 20 of Google Searches of both Global and US.
Recently the author of a korean webtoon drew a character of his art that they said to be inspired on 'Stray Kids' Hyunjin'
So he may not be "it boy", but hes not passing without being noticed AT ALL.

By the way Yeonjun has been called an it boy for more than a year already so it's not because the article they started calling him that, but after the article he did get even more hate so not sure what hybe was thinking
