I haven't been keeping up a whole lot with K-pop. But I never thought that mamamoo would decline as steeply and as fast as they did.
And it's not exactly a downfall because they're still number 1, but the decline in blackpink also took me by surprise a bit. I don't think even if they comeback it's going to be all that hype.
Which groups for you?
I dont really think Blackpink really "declined". They are just not promoting their album well (both domestically and overseas) + other newer GGs are working hard to catch the GP attention hence tougher competition.
The Album promotional cycle was MUCH better + collabs did pulled extra attention to them.

I just think in comparison their new album and singles were just a non event compared to the past.
But they still are number 1 just not as hype. and might be due to the reasons you said I'm not soon sure
Nothing has been surprising as such. Third gen GG’s naturally saw their decline and 4th gen rose esp digitally. For me this wasn’t really surprising as such.
What would be surprising is for example if NEW JEANS or IVE next comeback flopped on charts or if SKZ suddenly start dropping in sales and Spotify. These type of things would be surprising.
Itzy collapse was surprising couple of years back now it’s just the norm. Same thing with twice in Korea.

But it's really not surprising. Even with BlackPink. Mamamoo will be a 10 year old group this year. BlackPink will be an 8 year old group. Every artist will decline from their peak eventually; even the biggest acts.

Sorrryyy lol it was a surprise to me because they just were on top of a while then just felt like they stopped trying not sure what happened.
Their solos are still pretty successful tho right.

It was actually surprising to see them decline so quickly in korea especially in comparison of their other 3rd gen gg colleagues like rv and blackpink

It was and it wasn't. Their direction was starting to change. Think this had a more international style.
But recently they aren't even doing well in that so that's sad.

Probably the non Big4 GG with the best digitals, might even rival some Big4 GGs
Came here to say Everglow, too. They were one of the biggest 4th gen ggs globally in 2019/2020 along with Itzy.
Not surprising if you consider circumstances and YG's incompetence, but I guess we could include iKON here as well.
Also, not a group, but I'm surprised at how little noise some soloists from Wanna One have been doing. Apart from Kang Daniel, all of the others have been flopping hard, despite actively releasing stuff. At least that's the impression I have. I remember talking to my Korean friends back in 2017/18 and according to them, people like Park Jihoon, Yoon Jisung etc were SUPER popular, the hype was huge in Korea, so it's interesting that only Kang Daniel managed to "succeed" since bg fans are usually more loyal.
