Aespa, Ive, Lesserafim all at the same level in Korea now

  • Just in Korea only

Aespa leads in 1st week album sales, but they are the oldest group and had the longest hiatus

Ive has the edge in digitals, but it is not in every chart, all times of the day

Lesserafim is in the middle for both digitals and album sales

Out of scope for this discussion is how they are doing internationally.

  • kpop fans would learn advance calculus in 1 day if they knew it will help them with ranking idols

like why?? why does it matter wen they are all doing well?

  • Nwjns has no competition in 4th gen international

They're about to become BP competitor in every way except touring following their upcoming CB (BP has no competition there)

    :whatb:

  • IVE had PAK with a prerelease with 0 promo and another PAK when title track dropped. Also, the peak ULs of both songs are higher than Unforgiven and Spicy.

I Am is holding off well against Unforgiven and Spicy despite it is more than a month old and already removed from new songs chart

I would say IVE = NewJeans > LSRF = Aespa for now. Aespa is slowly warming up for the GP after their long hiatus. People are clearly giving them chance as evident by the whole album charting on circle digital chart top 200.

  • Interesting that some people consider digitals (equivalent Korean general public love) to be considerably more important than album sales (equivalent to fandom strength).

Fandom strength equates to who will buy tickets to concerts and group merchandise, which is where the most successful groups make most of their profit.

You can’t use album sales to judge Korean popularity anyway because sales are worldwide. So it’s actually because of you that the direction of the thread went this way. You specifically said you wanted to talk about Korean popularity.

Ive is the biggest act in Korea right now.

Ive then NJ in tier 1.

Aespa and Lesserafim in tier 2.

Idle is TBD, we need to see how QC does.

Good point. When I created the thread I just assumed that each fandom sells the same percentage of albums overseas, so 1st week albums sales in Korea is something all would consider is a fair thing to compare.

There are receipts that a certain group sells ~50% and maybe more of their albums to China. So maybe another group is #1 for album sales to only Koreans.

Majority of GG sales are coming from outside Korea that’s why none of them have had huge tours in Korea. For GGs there is no big fandom talk in Korea. Even the biggest ones like Twice and BP have limited concerts and limited fandom support in Korea.

GG fandoms lie outside Korea. In Korea GGs are primarily only based on GP support. This is very common knowledge.

Also everyone’s sales is majorly contributed by China or Japan no two ways about it.

    Everything has changed since Covid.

It has always been with boy groups even if they promoted only in Korea, and made no impact digitally, they could be very profitable, just based on their fandom. And if you were a GG and sold 50k that was fantastic.

Now most top GGs are doing million album sales. So while previously Korean GGs depended primarily on GP support because the album sales were so low, for the top girl groups it is not the case now.

So even if a GG has 50% of sales outside Korea, the top girl groups now have huge fandom buying power by Koreans within Korea compared to pre-COVID. Plus there is also merchandising sales that we do not see.

You can now say that the top girl groups are like the boy groups of old, with huge fandoms and huge fandom buying power, and basically once you have a huge fandom, general public support doesn't matter as much.

This leads to the question that has been regularly asked in the last 15 years. What is more important to a group, fandom or general public support?

  • Idle is tier 1.5

they are not as strong as IVE and NJ in digital doing crazy things every comeback

but they had 2 back to back hit who had PAK with Tomboy and Nude so they have been much stronger digitally lately than aespa and Lsrf

no need to see how QC does to judge idle, why ifans love dismiss what IDLE have been doing in the past 2 years in korea '-'

  • This leads to the question that has been regularly asked in the last 15 years. What is more important to a group, fandom or general public support?

you need both to be a top group

Most boygroups have big fanbase which will keep them ongoing for years but many dont see them as popular or "iconic/legendary" because they are niche and rely on their fanbase.

Most girl groups (prior to 3rd & 4th gen) had only the general public support. They are not big physical seller but their songs are most of the time received very well (e.g. Sistar, AOA, Girls Day, 2ne1, 4minute, Miss A, Mamamoo). Performing digitally well give public recognition and guarantee you success in term of CFs and festival invitations. They rely on those instead of concert and merchs sales. Of course this landscape has totally changed now that GG fans are heavy buyers too.

Group like BTS BP and Seventeen to certain extent (Super is stable in top10) have both. Hence, they are the top in the game. More and more 4th gen GGs are showing that too - NWJS, LSRF, AESPA. They are definitely going to have a long career.

  • I think LSF took a lot of their fans when they promoted at the same time on their last comeback. Yes gidle out digitalled them initially with PAKs and a got huge amount of praise for the precieved Nxde message, but LSF outlasted them on the charts. While they are still a strong group and also a 1st week million seller, imo they are going down a risky direction with a redux of a sexy concept again, which hasn't been successful long term for any GG.

I am of the same view. I think LSRF is slowly overtaking GIDLE. Nxde started stronger but its longevity wasnt that good. Antifragile really did wonder for LSRF

  • In Korea it has not changed what makes you say that lol. Sales outside Korea has increased post COVID.

KPOP did not expand in Korea it expanded everywhere else.

Anyway since we don’t know how many sales come from Korea whether is 5% or 50% you can’t even give a ballpark number best you can do is go look for some big group order numbers but even then it’s not helpful.

So in short sales cannot be used in any way to judge Korean popularity and no it’s not 50% sales and we don’t know what the reasonable number is.

  • Check the streams on all of their 6 songs across all platforms lol

    Their charting in kor/jpn/US etc

oh man, it's only OMG that remain on top 50 spotify global. Cupid is #3 on that bracket, and #9 on spotify top US

    Spotify Daily Chart - Global

Spotify Daily Chart - United States

Spotify Daily Chart - United Kingdom

    Spotify Daily Chart - Australia

This is where Newjeans still charted at top 50 spotify daily regional

    Spotify Daily Chart - Japan

    Spotify Daily Chart - Malaysia

    Spotify Daily Chart - Singapore

    Spotify Daily Chart - Indonesia

  • I'm tired of people downplaying LSF in this forum.

Let me make this clear: LRS didn't have a single flop. All their title tracks are still charting top 100 daily on Melon, their longevity in insane. Fearless is not a mega hit but it's outcharting multiple mega hits released around that time or even later hits showing their interesting in SK is really big. They have big youtube support, good enough spotify stream (with Antifragile is doing wonder just behind NJ and Unforgiven is showing good number too), Apple music is their lane without competition, physical is only behind Aespa now. So with current releases here are the current ranking:

    1. Youtube: LSR >> IVE > GIDLE > AESPA > NJS (don't look at the views, look at the likes)

    2. Spotify: NJS >>> LSR > IVE >>> GIDLE >>>> AESPA (Aespa is so weak in spotify, can call them flop here)

    3. Apple music: LSR > NJ >> IVE >>> AESPA >> GIDLE

    3. Physical: AESPA > LSR > IVE > GIDLE = NJS

    4. SK chart: IVE = NJS >>> LSR > AESPA = GIDLE

So why would you put LSF last just because they didn't have PAKs?

Tbh if both Antifragile and Unforgiven release at some other times, they would easily get PAKs

  • No one is downplaying LSF. But this discussion is about how 3 groups are doing in Korea, which is LSF's weakness, as they are releasing music for the international market not the domestic market. There are certain music styles and concepts proven to work domestically that do not work as effectively internationally. Yet even at their weakest, you can strongly argue they are doing really well, amongst these 3 top groups.

  • Actually IVE have better sales then Lsrf

Ive is actually the second best selling 4th gen gg on hanteo
