People say 3rd gen is only between 2014 - 2017 which make literally no sense. It only take 4 years. By that logic 2022 would already be 5th gen

I think 3rd gen ends in 2018

. . . who said this . . . lmao

. . . who said this . . . lmao
all 2nd gen gg stans say 3rd gen begin 2014
-
3rd gen started in 2012/2013 with exo.
Videos hype new groups up all the time as the next big thing. I remember some generation map showing 2018. 2021 very much was prominent for 4th gen ggs. I think a new gen will started for new groups to make competition easy lol.

Yes, but generation change different time for ggs than bgs? Thats why AOA is 2nd gen while exo 3rd gen while both debuted during the same year?

4th gen start is such a grey line IMO. like if you think about it, 3rd gen was like 7 years and 2nd gen was like 12?? it doesn't make sense. so yeah, if 2021/22 were the starting point- it would make at least a bit more sense. but at the same time, i think the starting point on generations depends on where the music starts evolving, almost. kind of like how 2nd & 3rd have two easily differentiable vibes. though, the beginning of 3rd gen also sounded like 2nd gen so like that's also another grey line.
tldr: yeah, 2022 is is def a 4th gen debut year

If we go by who went big there is no doubt 2019 would be the start for 4th gen ggs. Dalla dalla was big. And 4th gen bgs have not yet started. Also the first gg for 3rd gen that made it big was actually gfriend who debuted in 2015? Was there that big of a hit by what we consider 3rd gen ggs before that?

No. 4th gen came in 2018, we can’t change it. Groups are alr known as 4th gen, and fans have CLUNG onto the title.
Tbh I don’t believe 4th gen should have come in 2018, but fans started calling groups 4th gen cuz they couldn’t compete with 3rd gen and companies media played the heck out of it to make their groups seem more new and fresher so now it’s here to stay.
We just have to accept that 3rd gen will be the shortest gen. Bc unlike the other gen poeple became obsessed with the 4th gen title and named 4th gen on the spot.
It will be interesting to see when 5th gen becomes a thing. 4th gen stans are totally against it bc their groups will no be the new and shiny things then.

Generations aren't just built around the years, they're built around fundamental shifts in the music, styles, performances, sales, videos, etc. It's clear that 4th gen gg (and bg) are different than their predecessors. There are certainly some groups late in the 3rd gen who are more similar in style and format to 4th gen groups than 3rd gen ones, but overall it feels very right to me that groups like Itzy, aespa, Kep1er and Ive are very different to Twice, RV, Mamamoo and Momoland, just as those groups were very different to SNSD, f(x), Wonder Girls and 2NE1.
-
4th gen has already started you can see groups having 4th gen collabs at award shows as we had in 3rd gen. Kmedia has been using the term 4th gen, also all these companies like JYP, SM, Hybe consider aespa, Itzy, Enhyphen, TXT as 4th gen groups. What more do people want to indicate the beginning of 4th gen?

kpop is different from western pop. Kpop has a system like you become a trainee learn dance, and other skills, do variety shows, stay away from dating in your first years, and so on. This gen thing is part of the system too. If you compare it to other Korean artists like MFBTY, Crush, Yoon Jong Shin, Loco you can see that they are restricted by the gen system.

To me the reason 4th Gen started in 2018 is because at that time international appreciation for KPOP really started to explode. Thus groups that debuted in 2018 started with an international base viewership that didn't truly exist to any were near the same degree as in 2016. Even Blackpink didn't really blow up until 2018 with the release of DdDdDd. For me 2017 was the transitional time period as none of the groups in 2017 made as much of an impact as in 2016 and in 2018. When (G)I-dle, IZ*ONE and others debuted they instantly overshadowed all the groups from 2017 and had a distinct international and large fandom. A clear line was crossed at that point.

I don't know if there was hits, but there were atleast succesful groups from 2014 like RV and Mamamoo

I disagree. They may not call a "generation" but you ABSOLUTELY see this within genres and within even mainstream pop music as a way to categorize a specific sound - people talk about the golden age of hip hop or gangsta rap (yes it's a specific style, but it is also usually referencing a specific time period) or bling era. I think we're more likely to call it by the years in the West - like people differentiate 90s country to current country and 90s r&b is very different to today's r&b.

This gen thing is becoming as polemic as national hit discussions

yeah but I have seen pann articles and knetz were saying 4th gen started in 2019 there are mixed opinions about this and tbh only when itzy and txt debuted is when the whole 4th gen talk started.

But even in genres similar to KPOP like JPOP and CPOP you don't really see this type of stuff. Or at least it isn't such a huge debate as it is in the Kpop community.

Keeping up these discussions, in year 2025 we'll be in the 6th generation already.

omg I actually stopped giving a shit atp to me whether txtzy are 3rd 4th or 6th doesnt change anything
As long as people stan both, they can call them whatever

We are starting 5th Gen this year
-
I just accept that 3rd gen is too superior that everyone want them to go faster or else the new debuting groups will have no achievements. Like every of the 4th gen groups achievements will have 'the first 4th gen', 'the faster 4th gen', 'the most 4th gen', something like that in their narrative which is very sad to see as if you include them with the 3rd, they will easily get overlook.
