Great digital sales but lacking in album sales.
Is IU the "Dua Lipa" of KPOP?

Dua lipa got decent album sales for a western artist last I checked. The format is almost dead except for a few like adele, taylor swift, ed sheeran, billie etc (and even them are declining compared to before)

The Queen of Korea if she read this:

Compare their last few album sales to each other, IU is selling double taeyeon's albums now
Cumulatively, IU has sold 1.5 million albums in SK, 400k from her last album.

She reminds me more of ariana grande who also has surprisingly low sales
-
huh

Taeyeon best selling album has sold like 100k IU last album sold 400k albums she is behind rosé and Lisa. So yes she has a great selling power especially when album sales are dominated by groups.

Anyway this is disrespect to IU. She's probably up there with BoA as the most loved female idol in Korea. Sales are largely dominated by idol groups with strong international fanbases so IU is obviously at a disadvantage here. But if you compare them to other female soloists popular in Korea, such as Heize & Taeyeon, then they're great.
She literally went #1 with a random song from the vault if that doesn't show how loved she is then idk.

IU has 1,5m total album sales and her last album sold 400k. Taeyeon is at 1m total.
But for measuring popularity in south korea its a useless metric. Digitals is where its at and no artist beats IU there.

Physical Albums are an anachronism, dying medium. The uptick in album sales in recent years is a passing fad
And it is not by sales should artist be compared. IU's brand is her almost poetic songwriting, that is Taylor Swift in the US.
Taeyeon is not known for her lyrical ability, but vocal.
In SK, GGs/Women soloists do badly in physical and BGs in digital as a trend.
IU's best has been Lilac, hence her first ever Album Bonsang.
BGs the exception to poor digital trend are Big Bang and BTS, they hit all targets.

Top album of the world, 14th week , 2021
She sold perhaps 350k last year

Actually Lee Sora , active in mid-1990s, sold more than a million at her heyday but at that time stats were less accurately kept.
Lee Sooyoung sold perhaps 2.5 million copies in about 7-8 albums in early 2000s. She DID win the Golden Disk-Album (at that time there was no digital award) in 2004.
Lee JIeun has a lot of way to go to follow these two acts

IU has likely already surpassed Lee Sora's album sales but I didn't know that about Lee Sooyoung (forgot about her compilation and live albums). I always thought BoA held the physical sales record but apparently not.

Lol is this guy seriously comparing IU's album sales to artists from the 1990s, when buying CDs was pretty much the only way to consume music?

The music sticks tho
If it wasn't any good,it wouldn't stick despite the insane radio play she gets
Well scratch that, levitating & don't start now are the ones that stuck around

"Taeyeon best selling album has sold like 100K". That is such a straight up lie, if i remember correctly, since when Taeyeon debuted, she sold the most albums, IU album sales only skyrocketed during LILAC but before that her total album sales is on par with Taeyeon considering she debuted in late 2015
-
she sold 400k recently
i wonder if it is her chinese fanbase or korean fanbase buying so many albums

IU's album sales more than doubled from Palette to Love poem, and that would be thanks to i-fans (mostly chinese). Then her sales almost doubled again for Lilac, and the cause for that would probably be the fact that the Lilac album came in 2 versions (it was the first time she released an album with multiple versions). So I think that in total, her album sales are probably half domestic and half international.

Yes, Taeyeon always had an edge over IU when it came to album sales until Love Poem came out. But then again, Taeyeon belongs to one of the most successful ggs of all time and it is astounding that a pure soloist like IU has managed to surpass her in physical sales.

she is more like Taylor swift influencer and powerful

IU is kinda like Drake and Taylor Swift combined but like 2009 Taylor Swift. Like she's very popular and liked by everyone to an extent idk any American artist has ever been. And then Drake is the closest to her in terms of digital dominance (she had 5 songs in the top 10 when Lilac came out, and Drake had 9/10 when CLB dropped), but her biggest singles proportionally do even better than his.
