  • idk somehow sorns tiktoks seem desperate???

i appreciate that she's trying hard to get herself and clc a fanbase so i've simply blocked her and moved on.

i haven't seen any from alexa so idk

i do think that a lot of the english speaking kpop idol crowd are a lil cringey. the whole jamie-jae-bm-amber-that one dude i cant remember-eric nam are fun at first but slowly grate on my nerves. i do love their music individually but together they feel a lil bit try hard to me.

then again, all of them are aiming for a western fanbase so they do need to be try hards to get that audience.

there definitely are "classier" english speaking idols too, rm, jackson, bp, somi, tiffany, krystal etc, but they already have a fanbase so they dont really need to try too hard.

i sympathize with the try hard idols, so i just block and leave. they should ignore people like me and work hard since i would never be part of their target audience anyway

  • Alexa is nugu in comparison to Sorn

also a reminder that Alexa's mom is Korean...

so you have Sorn who is from Thailand, and obviously can speak Thai, and also she learned Korean and English and is fluent in those both languages

so in this case whatever Sorn does, kudos to her

as for Alexa well, I don't know where her company has money to release all those MV's...

  • Her company does the CGI work for other companies for music videos and commercials. So their main income is doing work for other labels/companies.

    ~ ω

  • they both irk me. Idk. I hate that type of relatable humor. Anytime I watch sorn's tik toks my face stays like this :|. She is not serving anything. Same with Alexa. At least make good music if your going to be bland. I hate how all English speaking idols have this humor, actually I mean idols from America or Canada. Just no flavor.

i wouldn't generalize this since i think somi/krystal/jessica are all pretty classy

i think it's the more irrelevant idols who are desperate and thus cringey that way

  • The audacity coming from an user named after Jennie lol I feel like these people never really followed an idol out of a big3 or that actually needs to make a name for themselves… I bet even Jennie herself did “stupid” stuff in her debut days

I actually do find her a bit cringe but idols need to do cringe things to have fans and engagement

  • Her company does the CGI work for other companies for music videos and commercials. So their main income is doing work for other labels/companies.

ah you mean Zany Bros yeah

but still I thought they have some budget for her because you know... she sells like 100-200 albums

im assuming this is about me since i'm the only one named after jennie in this thread-

you clearly didn't read my post, since i've literally said, "i appreciate that she's trying hard to get herself and clc a fanbase so i've simply blocked her and moved on."

not having a fanbase is why those idols are cringey, but bp have had a decent fanbase since debut, and barely gave us content, let alone cringey content. there is no "audacity" coming from me, when idols i stan like gfriend or loona have made a name for themselves from their concepts or skills, not pretending to be relatable and making weird faces on tiktok-

Your agurment is spot ont imo. Sorn and Alexa have to try hard because they need to attract any type of attention( similar to other English-speaking idols.)

I was talking about the tiktok user, they’re called jennietingz or something like that lol I never had a problem with your post

Blackpink had cringe content too the difference is that they don’t need to overdue it because they know they won’t go back to nugudom if they do not. Gfriend got famous because they had a concert they kept falling over and over, obviously people stayed because of their music but they needed to do something to be noticed or they’re buried by the hundreds acts that debut every year.

  • I didn't think of that, but true.

There's basically two types of English speaking Kpop stars

The more reserved ones who basically act like native Koreans and the cringe ones who are just super try-hard. The 2nd gen English speaking members are for the most part more chill. 3rd gen onwards are usually the try-hard ones. Alexa, Sorn, Jae, Jamie, BM, Coco, Peniel, Eric Nam, Keeho, the list goes on. Interestingly a lot of them are friends with each other. I like all of these artists but they are a bit much and I cringe listening to them in interviews. I think they're just trying so hard to appeal to the Western fandom and it actually does work because that western fandom is mostly highschool-aged and younger. I just think they're desperate to make a name for themselves. The more quirky they are, the more "stan twitter lingo they use," the more attention they'll receive.

    oh- oops- sorry-

also the gfriend falling concert bit, i think they got more popular for their professionalism and determination to finish the stage despite falling (it was rather endearing, and fans like groups who are working hard), i think that is just as much of a skill as just singing or dancing.

i however, dont think trying to get tiktok famous is a talent, unless it's for the music/dance itself (dance challenges and stuff like that)

but yea, they need the attention and i sympathize with them.

yeah...I also think that quirky stuff doesn't even attract stans....

like the reason ppl like idols is because we sort of idolize them you know, and being too relatable take away from that image. It's alright for an influencer to be relatable since that's basically their job. But for an idol, I actually think it cheapens their image and hurts their brand.

doesn't attract OLDER stans. I think the immature audience eats it up. Also I get what you're saying but I think that's kinda how Koreans feel about Kpop stars. They put them on a pedestal that is greater than though (so they have this perfect image to maintain which puts them under 24/7 stress). I think i-fans like having someone who is #relatable, who understands their jokes, their lingo, etc. Thing is I want someone who is actually relatable, not someone trying to be. But I don't think younger fans have made that distinction.

this makes so much sense. This is why I really liked Hwasa at the beginning. after home alone..but recently she's not as relatable.

still talented, but lacking the genuine feel imo.

Why is Jessi not in the list

  • Bad take all in all.

And not a teenage fan or whatever.

They are just doing their best to integrate themselves in the K-pop culture and whatever whilst trying to keep their own identities as not growing up in SK.

If that is cringe to any of you, fine.

    It's not cringe to me.

I've watched a lot and I mean A LOT of their podcasts and all they are doing is talking about how stuff is different for them and how they are trying to cope.

  • Life as a famous person is hard. If you're not that relatable, you're fake and robotic. If you share too much, you're a tryhard. tbh I kind of agree with the idols some of you mentioned which makes me sad. I feel like most of us would be tryhards if we were idols too. Usually, I get attracted to the other type of idols who don't show much but it bothers me that they don't show off their talents more or speak out of the script all the time. Because I know that if I were them I would be showing off all the time and would share my opinions about everything all the time because I can't help it. A true annoying tryhard. Yet when I see idols like that, I get turned off.

I heard her family is rich...

and she is "signed" to a company that makes music videos for cash...

    just saying.

  • I dont get it. Somi is literally half white (i dunno what Alexa's background is). Why is it considered "try hard" to want to be relateable to literally her own race??? That's like saying it's tryhard when a black person does hiphop or a Korean person does trot. Like wut?

I think a lot of us are praising Somi for not being cringe and try-hard. Also AleXa is half white (she is half Russian and grew up in Oklahoma)

I should note that it is offensive to include Somi in this because of her race and her english.

Somi didn't move to Korea for kpop. Somi is just as Korean as any other Korean idol.

She moved to Korea when she was 1.

Her company is one of the most successful and influential music video companies in Korea. They did music video for bts, sm and jyp artists, mamamoo, for example they did all purple kiss MVs. You should google them, they are interesting.

~ Retired exol, don't ask me about that group. ~

What Western fans are idolizing idols?

Did you saw Sorn and read Somi because I didn't see anybody say Somi is tryhard in this thread

On topic many western born idols have this cringe personality atleast when speaking english, using twitter lingo and sometimes using slang that is outdated by a few years, plus seeming to imitate the way people act in shitty teenage shows

But there is some people born and bred in Asia that act like this too and I find it even worse, these people sometimes may even end up in controversies for saying words that are considered racially charged like a prominent recent example

^Somi is literally in the title of this thread. I'm so confused.
