a ton of BTSs old album (like their debut one) are having their best selling year this year.
Overall BE has 994k sales in 2021
The LY Series and MOTS Series all each have around 200k sales each in 2021 (ie LY Her, tear, answer, mots persona, 7 have all sold around 200k each in 2021)
the HYYH series and Wings/YNWA have around 100k sales each. their least amount of sales for an album this year is 75k for their debut album (an 8 year old album) and it'll still be that albums best selling year (beating out all previous years).
HYLT single album has sold some this year: Not much but it's still there - 4,523 in 2021

not long ago I was shocked that they were selling one million
stupidly thinking they were always gonna reach one million in back catalogue sales 
but this is next level

This is really interesting - for all the shouting about the death of Kpop, this chart seems to show that people are still getting into it or expanding their interest in it by seeking old albums by these artists.
Way to go to all on the list, but I think there is some good info here when people are surprised by the sudden growth in a group’s sales (NCT, SKZ). People may have not bought initially but discovered the back catalog along the way, became fans and now are fueling new releases.
This is why it pisses me off when companies won't restock. They're literally leaving money on the table.
In fact album sales don't make much money for the company or the artists because they have high production expenses and many involved parties that need to get paid. So if the artist is not promoting (which in normal circumstances includes events, advertisements and is followed by tours especially for big artists, all of which are profitable activities), it's understandable why companies wouldn't go out of their way to produce old albums just to make little profit. In SM's case I don't think they make any profit at all since they all go to their Unicef campaign "SMile" (cmiiw).

I can’t speak for SKZ. But for NCT, it’s a combination of two factors IMO - the pandemic found a lot of people at home and NCT 127 launched a really eye catching video and a catchy song (Kick It) and had a ton of content both in 2020 and historically so it was a good time to discover the group (it feels like there’s a solid portion of people who come into the music from seeing the content, ie a funny video or segment).
I also think Resonance did a lot to boost back catalog sales: it made people go back and check out the back catalog, just as it boosted the sales of the albums that came after it. (And the Resonance albums themselves are still selling well into this year - the higher profile of Hot Sauce/Hello Future and Sticker is also pulling in people to check those out.)
One related note: people seem to think that NCTzens stan all units, which is not necessarily true. I think Resonance also may have shown off units to those within the fandom that they went to search them out. I’m thinking particularly of WayV, which it feels like got attention paid to them based on their Resonance work, but from my own anecdotal experience of one, I paid a lot more attention to the Dream release post Resonance because I liked what I heard of their vocals on that album and went on to buy the new albums and reconsider the older ones. (Still don’t care for the older ones but it’s possible others may have a different experience..)
