Would you have rather have a big fanbase in Japan or in China?

Japan has probably the best music audience and culture in the world.

Japan definitely way more money both for albums and tours. Plus funny enough less politically volatile especially if you have Taiwanese or even Chinese members. Also China is too big so touring would be more expensive but Japan is small and has a huge concert scene so it just is a no brainer

Easily Japan. Acts make an insane amount there from just touring and physical sales. It seems like digital sales from downloads and streaming are also rising. Dynamite alone made $11M from its first 4 months last year there and BTS made $100M+ from just sales on Oricon in 2020. Imagine how much more they would have made with touring?

Japan is also western acts go-to market among all of Asian countries.

Japan at least idols can perform there

Japan. Bigger market, more money, better music scene, dont have to compromise your morals (if they exist) and grovel before the CCP.

Japan will give you more revenue tho, and you wouldn't have to tiptoe around the CCP

Japan. Japan alone made BTS UMGs biggest money maker in Q2 of 2021 ahead of acts like Justin B and The Weeknd and Olivia who are all signed fully under UMG while BTS is only signed to UMG Japan. Japan also allows for their numbers to be included in Global numbers. Ie they use Spotify and YT and contribute to those numbers while China doesn't.

I rarely hear any kpop groups make a Chinese comeback. If groups can make Japanese comebacks aside from Korean comebacks, then that means extra penny every year

No that japanese fanbases are bad but I feel they grow out of idol members as soona s the group is inactive while Chinese fans go and stay with the member they like for a very long time

realistically is better to have both, chinese spend a lot of money on idols, are pretty loyal, buy a lot of albums, gifs, ads etc but if i had to chose one, Japan since they can tour and touring is big in Japan in general

Isn’t kpop banned in china? Are artists allowed to go on their shows and sing in Korean or tour?

Doesn’t really compare to TVXQ who has been the biggest money makers for SM for nearly 15 years thanks to Japan due to touring and sales. Didn’t they make like $200M in just 1 year from Japanese touring and sales?
