After two months, the song still gain over 117M streams in weekly chart and even Christmas season does not seem slowing down the song. I have never seen something like this. It potentially be even bigger than Gangnam Style, if it have longevity.
Do you think APT is bigger than Gangnam Style?

no shot. gangnam style is literally everywhere. almost every counrty have a video of gangnam style flash mob and alot of people on the side will just stop and watch coz they know its "gangnam style"
you see alot of kpop dance in public type video nowadays but alot of people in the side will just glance and think it's"k-pop" and went on with their business.
youtube is not as big as today but gangnam style is still up there being one of the quickest to get to 1b views. -
No. Times are different and Gangnam Style was 12 years ago; there was barely Spotify or any streaming platforms easily accessible to the masses except for YT where Gangnam Style reigned over.
The virality of Gangnam Style and how it took over the world will be impossible to match.
But I do think APT is the biggest kpop song after Gangnam Style - it's so viral and popular that even my mom knows it and sings it all the time.
-
-
Biggest after GS
-
APT is a Hit song but it's not at all comparable to Gangnam style, if you want to make a comparison it's more like "Dynamite" by BTS or "Money" by Lisa.
I can give you week 9 comparison of these songs. And that was the time once fandom still purely focused streaming in Youtube. These songs would not do as well anymore in current Spotify era. Still these songs are not anywhere close to APT numbers.

Gangnam style was the biggets song of the 10s, probably the song with the most impact we've lived and it would even be in the discussion of the biggest songs ever. Back then Spotify wasn't that big but it completely demolished Youtube, it was getting 3 or 4 times more views than the other big songs of the moment, it wouldn't surprise me if it was released today it would be getting 30M+ daily streams during its peak. Also impact, the song was literally everywhere, and the fact that it was in Korean just makes it even crazier.

It is easily the biggest kpop song after Gangnam Style but its not bigger.
Have to say though, the song have blown up for a longer period than I initially thought it would be
-
No, even as a Rosie bias blink- I think GS was a viral song which hit like Macarena or Barbie Girl did in the gp's consciousness for their time. Or Spice Girls Wannable(as I remember when it). Altho those songs might be barely known to young uns now(except those who were just born when GS released n their elders played the song when they were kids) I think APT hasn't reached the non kpop gp(or the wide audience tat GS, Macarena, Barbie Girl or Spice Girls' Wannabe did in their day).
Pop culture is just too fractured now(or been so since [ur choice-mozart or Elvis debut]), Swifties/1Directioners wouldn't give the time of day to APT (I believe), nor would Beyoncers(idk wat to call her fandom) nor Beliebers, Ricky Martin fandom either. Just as a matter of loyalty to their own fandom/taste wise I think APT doesn't crossover to those I mentioned in this paragraph; whereas at least GS n previous viral songs which crossover success to English language(n SA/Euro lang) countries probably only had rock/rap/heavy metal fans n not neutrals who dint listen/did not admit liking GS, Macarena, SG's Wannabe. There's a lot of polarity in music listening audience I think in English language(n SA/Euro lang) countries which is less I think outside of there.
GS broke through as kpop wasn't then seen as invasive/divisive as it was after GS/baby shark heyday(I believe). Either becos of backlash against Korean songs success or GS in particular, APT hasn't made inroads into those I mentioned in previous paragraph(unless u think there's swifties/1Ders/others who liked/listened/gave a fair hearing to APT/kpop in general?)
-
nah, I remember when Gangnam Style was big and literally EVERYONE knew it and still would if I brought it up. It was everywhere in schools and on the news. Those I know who have no idea what kpop is have no idea APT exists, that was not the case for Gangnam Style. Everyone and their mother knew the song and dance.

Apt doesn’t have the cultural impact of GS

Apt doesn’t have the cultural impact of GS
It doesn't have to.
It just needed to be very popular and that's what happened.
-
-
-
No, and I don't think any Kpop song ever will even come close. Gangnam Style is not just a matter of a hit song, it was a phenomenon and a viral meme everyone knew and watched, played and danced.
But APT. is the biggest song by a Korean act after Gangnam Style.
-
Nah, not even close

Well no…apt is another big hit like expresso, die with a smile etc but to say it’s bigger than GS because it’s doing well on Spotify and YouTube makes no sense.
GS was popular everywhere meanwhile APT is doing well in some regions and we don’t even know if it will do so well next year so no
-
HAHAHHAHA
Do I need to say more?

And if I say Expresso is a Gangnam style level hit
-
-
Ofc not. Apt is "just" a hit pop song and have no cultural impact, unlike GS, just like killthisfenty said. And it won't have.
Comparing today's numbers with numbers of decades ago makes no sense. Platforms today have more users and model of consuming content has changed. Nowadays passionate fans take streaming seriously like it's their job, plus payola. Lot of those numbers aren't organic. GS numbers were organic, the song became organically viral. People of all ages knew it and everyone tried to do the dance, celebrities included.
No song cannot be compared to GS.
-
Gangnam style was everywhere I mean Everywhere. It was big in every single corner of the world. Even 60-70 year old ladies know gangnam style. Not a single song released this year comes close to gangnam style not even Espresso or Die With a Smile.
-
The comparison makes no sense. Gangnam Style was a massive global sensation in a time where Kpop was barely a blip on the global music market, not to mention when the era of streaming had barely started. I was in (an American) university when it came out, and everyone was talking about it. My a cappella group had a reference to it in one of our arrangements and the crowd went wild every time. I'll add that not a single one of our members listened to Kpop before, including myself. The only comparable songs I can think of off the top of my head in recent memory are Despacito and Baby Shark, as far as global multi-generational virality.
-
GS was huge in a way that's impossible to recreate now. Like literally every single person knew that song, the dance etc but apt is still a song you only know if you're chronically online.
But that's how the market has changed. There used to be online + offline impact with popular songs but now it's kind of stuck mostly online. The vitality of apt is still impressive because I'm still hearing it a lot in non-kpop spheres which is a massive achievement.
-
-
I keep hearing that Apt is viral but I have not heard or seen the song other than when I log onto a kpop forum or I specifically type apt on YouTube. Barely anyone around me know the song existed. On the other hand, I didn't have do anything and I see and hear Gangnam Style all the time. Even when I got tired of it and try to avoid it, I still see and hear it.
-
Maybe if it gets hundreds of parodies like GS got
-
In sheer numbers, even mid-hits nowadays gather huge streams etc., because of the spread of social media and globalisation of Kpop.
So sure APT is it hasn't already, will probably cross the numbers of Gangnam Style.
But no Kpop song has come anywhere near the impact Gangnam Style has had upon the world, culturally.
People would recognize its intro, dance moves, even in utterly unexpected hinterlands of say India or Africa. I recollect hearing in random tiny shops during my travels in 2012-13 period and even occasionally today
Nothing has replaced GS as the representative song of Kpop to the world at large, much though ARMY and Blinks might protest.
They have to make do with other records set.

-
lmfao obviously not, the simple comparison is insulting

There are a million definitions for what is Kpop, what is yours?

The same as the Korean music industry: music by idol groups. This does not include first-gen hip-hop artists.
