No one knows when generations begin. Usually the generations are decided democratically. When most people accept it to start, it starts. There is no big line when generations start or end.

4th gen still, more accurately 4.5 generation.

4th gen started in 2018 with Gidle, then Izone, Itzy, Aespa, Stayc. When Izone was disbanded, that set the stage for the start of 4.5 generation which began with Ive, then NMIXX, Kepler, LSRFM, NJ. Now we're in end stage 4.5 with Baemon and these new multicultural groups like Illin and Vichy.

For BGs, a group like Riiiiiiize is SM's 4th gen BG since NCT is actually their 3rd gen group. ZB1 is a 4th gen replacement group for the disbanded X1 for CJENM.

I think 5th gen starts in 2025 sometime with BTS coming back.

Even Kep1er was advertised as 5th gen group. Now they are almost two years old and nobody advertise them as 5th gen group anymore.

according to the korean herald and some other korean media we are suppossed to already be in 5th gen boynextdoor,Riize, kiss of life, xikers,baby monster,zb1 are all suppossed 5th gen groups

I agree it is quite confusing. I feel like the shift was I guess suppossed to like occur like at this time but like you said majority of groups debuting so far are boy groups and kpop girl groups debuting from small companies, but at the same time boy groups are technically breaking records (mostly with like album debut sales) which kinda reminds me of Itzy and txt breaking debut mv view records. but Idk just my thoughts.

It’s still 4th gen unless in a few years smth will prove that 2023 was 5th gen already but that didn’t happen yet

Well, then this would be a massive blow to all the diehards who think 4th gen started in 2020 lol. Because it would mean their version of 4th gen lasted only 3 years, literally. 2020, 2021, and 2022.

When people decide their new faves cannot get at the top of the current gen anymore (aka surpass NewJeans, IVE etc) they will decide it's 5th gen

this is not true there are girl groups that are 5th gen kiss of life consider themselves 5th gen

kiss of life, adya, i'll-it, sm gg and baemon there are more girl groups that debuted debuted (or gonna to debut) this year

rant: I don't understand why people are fine with 4th gen started too soon but make a big deal with 5th gen

technically 4th gen should have started in 2019 or 2020 but people include groups that debuted in 2018 or even late 2017

we all know the whole 4th gen talk started with txt and itzy. I'm gonna be honest I won't be surprised if new jeans or other groups that debuted last year might be included later in 5th gen

Personally, it feels weird to me.

It seems 4th gen is not at its peak yet and is still rising.
