kpop acts - international fame vs domestic fame (Korea)

Monsta X before getting a renaissance after Wonho's departure were pretty much nugu in SK but had 3 world tours, #5 on us billboard and #1 on bb japan. After Wonho left something happened and koreans started paying more attention to them and now they're pretty well known in SK

It doesn't matter if it's Korea, Japan, Thailand, etc it's not a question of domestic vs international the question is one market vs many.

Niziu and Gfriend both suffered from the same issue, total and utter failure to grow outside of their main target markets and when they start to decline in those markets they had nowhere to fall back on.

Korea is just a more extreme example of this. Korea gets over groups fast 3-4 years is long term success in that market. o having relevance in SEA, Japan, USA, etc is not only factually and provably better, but a requirement today.

Surely international fame is important for money and all but every artist wanted to be known by their own country people. Fans say they don't care but in reality artists do.

what about the inverse, can you think of ay groups with massive international fanbases that have tanked? i'm struggling to think of it

To be very successful you have to be popular internationally.

Gfriend, Brave girls had #1 songs in Korea and were popular in Korea only, and one has disbanded and the other I would consider struggling now. AOA, OMG, Apink are other examples.

Boy groups in general, even the less successful ones, are popular internationally, and get enough revenue touring, even small venues.

More popular internationally - Dreamcatcher, Kard. Dare I say maybe even Twice and Itzy right now?

Korea recently seems very fickle too. They seem to jump from group to group. It was Itzy, then Aespa, then maybe StayC, then Ive, and now New Jeans. So all in all, you may as well target the global market instead of the Korea one, since that is where most of the medium and long term profits are.

Momoland, laboum, lovelyz, clc... If not for the big companies groups, basicly the whole 3rd Gen got aabandonded in the Last few years.

BB Girls have allways struggled. Rollin sold like 1000 copies. They are an anomaly in Kpop run by the members dedication to their craft.

this is one of the true drawbacks of small company debuts. When the generation moves on, they tend to get stuck. Even big groups can struggle to stay relevant after a new generation

They haven’t “moved on” it’s actually the opposite. All these groups now have place on the charts and are successful. Sure they peaked and then have lesser performing comebacks but aespa spicy is still charting and charting decently. IVE continue to have hit after hit even if New Jeans are there and so does Gidle.

If anything girl groups of the new generation seem to all be doing simultaneously decently well on the charts.

So this argument is wrong.

I'd argue not today, it was ALWAYS required. It was simply not feasible to every company and every group

There is a reason why so many GGs careers vanished after 4 years, while for BGs their companies could ship them for touring in Japan, China or SEA once Korea stopped caring for them. TVXQ and 2PM come to mind

Maybe, but nowadays a third of idols are not even koreans. I'm sure for them korean popularity is not that important

I will argue Loona was never popular even internationally. They just had a extremely annoying ane obnoxious fandom on social media, but their streams were never big. Their biggest hit on Spotify is Butterfly and it only has 50 million streams. This is the same level of groups supposedly only popular in Korea like Oh My Girl

I meant k idols only. Obviously why would overseas one cares? Anyways end goal is money. But name recognition is important for idols locally as well.

Newjeans and Ive already have more hits than all other ggs of fourth gen despite debuting later than them. They have numerous number ones ( not a single one for aespa and itzy ) and another massive hits in case of newjeans. Other ggs don't have that many hits even debuting earlier. Can't be compared. Ive and newjeans are dominating at same time. Koreans have clearly liked the music output of these two on regular basis.

Not even new jeans biggest song is a #1. Let’s not confuse having a #1 with having a hit. Aespa have indeed had a mega hit and some moderate hits as well. Ofc new jeans IVE, and Gidle (even if people keep ignoring them) have more consistently performed.

Yeah but my point was newjeans Ive and gidle ( small hits and then tomboy) have way more massive clear hits than other three four namely aespa, stayc , lssfrm and itzy. They are clearly ahead in amount of hits and consistency.. And even hypeboy is their biggest, attention, ditto and omg are massive too and are on way to land in top ten year end chart which no one has ever done in circle history. Now supershy eta are smashing too consistently.

Aespa has only one massive hit in next level. Spicy will become a good size hit though. But they and itzy and stay c never had such consistent streak of hits whether number one Or not compared to Newjeans, gidle and Ive who have countless hits to backup their megahits.. Lssfrm are there too. They have good sized hits but lack that one. They have good sized hits though but just lacking some big ones to go to other level. The clear top three in hits are Newjeans, Ive and gidle by good margin

For touring, I guess International fame is better, since touring makes more money for the artist, but for endorsements or CFs, Korean fame may be more important.

Even if OMG are no longer doing gangbusters like they were for a short while, I still don't think Dreamcatcher's international fandom is comparable to OMG's Korean fandom. I often wonder how Dreamcatcher have evaded disbandment for this long. It's not like they're consistently touring in large venues overseas, which would be enough to make up for a lack of attention in Korea.
