Doyoung

I. Introduction

Kim Dong-Young (Hangul: 김동영) , known professionally as Doyoung (Hangul: 도영), is a Korean singer and actor. He is one of the main vocalists in the permanent NCT sub unit, NCT 127. NCT 127 sings primarily in Korean, as well as songs in English, Chinese and Japanese. He is also one of the main vocalists in the the rotational sub-unit, NCT U and the fixed member unit, NCT DoJaeJung.

II. Career

III. 2013-2016: SM Rookies

Doyoung was born on February 1, 1996. He was recruited by SM through a singing contest in 2013, then introduced as a member of the pre-debut group SM Rookies on December 23, 2013. Doyoung began appearing with other members of the group in live performances and variety shows. In 2015, he and group mate Jaehyun were MCs on the music show, Show Champion.

IIII. 2016: NCT

He made his first appearance in NCT on April 10, 2016, as part of NCT's rotating combination unit, NCT U. NCT U utilizes different members to match the song and its accompanying performance, as well as serving to debut new NCT members. Doyoung appeared as a singer and dancer in "The 7th Sense," NCT's debut single, as well as a singer on "Without You" in the Chinese and Korean versions.

Doyoung appeared in the ongoing NCT reality show, NCT Life, from varying periods throughout 2016-2018. In April-May 2016, he appeared in NCT Life in Bangkok, focusing on the members of SM Rookies and their journey to debut. As part of the show, he prepared for shows and appearances in Thailand with other members, including Jaehyun, Hansol, Johnny, Taeyong, Yuta, Ten, Taeil, Mark, Jeno, Jaemin and Jisung.

Doyoung also appeared in the second season of NCT Life in Seoul in May-June 2016, featuring the members touring around Seoul and completing missions. He joined several of the other SM Rookies featured in Season 1, including Taeyong, Yuta and Jaehyun, as well as new Chinese members Kun and Winwin.

In July 2016, he featured on "Cool," with SHINee's Key for an OST.

In October-November 2016, he appeared in the fourth season, NCT Life: Korean Food King Challenge, a cooking competition show featuring NCT 127 members, as well as non-NCT 127 members Ten.

His outgoing and friendly personality made him instantly popular on variety shows, starting with a beauty variety show in November 2016, Lipstick Prince.

In December 2016, SM announced it would be adding two members to its permanent NCT sub-unit NCT 127: SM Rookies Johnny and Doyoung. He also participated in a song for SM's digital Station project, "Sound of Your Heart" with other SM Entertainment singers, including Yesung of Super Junior, Sunny of Girls' Generation, Luna of f(x), Seulgi and Wendy of Red Velvet.

IIIII. 2017: Limitless and Cherry Bomb

Doyoung debuted with NCT 127 on January 6, 2017 on its second EP Limitless as a main vocalist. Doyoung is one of the power vocals, with an emotional and agile voice, conveying deep emotion while scaling a range of notes. It's his voice you often hear in soaring big notes. Doyoung's soaring notes often set the tone for the song or chorus and lead into the richer, fuller voice of one of the other main vocalists. His airy vocal will come in to offset either the rap or more industrial elements in a song.

In February 2017, Doyoung was announced as one of the three new MCs for the weekly music show, Inkigayo, alongside Jinyoung of GOT7 and Jisoo of Blackpink.

Doyoung returned to Thailand for the sixth season NCT Life in Chiang Mai in March-April 2017, with NCT 127 members Taeyong, Johnny, Yuta, Jaehyun, Winwin and non-NCT 127 member Ten serving as a tour guide.

NCT 127 released its third EP Cherry Bomb on June 14, 2017. It made its first appearances in live shows in the U.S. throughout the summer.

In June-July 2017, Doyoung appeared in the seventh season, NCT Life in Osaka, featuring NCT 127 members Taeil, Taeyong, Doyoung and Winwin touring Osaka with Yuta as a guide.

He continued to appear in variety shows and recorded songs for an OST, "Stay in My Life" with NCT 127 members Taeil and Taeyong, and SM's digital Station project, "Star Blossom."

IIIV. 2018: NCT Empathy and first album

In January 2018, Doyoung appeared with Taeil and Jaehyun as part of NCT U on an SM Station song, "Timeless." Doyoung participated with NCT during the NCT 2018 project on March 14, 2018, featuring all NCT members, and debuting three new ones. This project also included the first NCT full album, NCT 2018 Empathy. He appears as a singer on "Boss," "Yesterday" and the re-released "Timeless," "The 7th Sense" and "Without You" in Chinese and Korean, as well as the 127 song "Touch." He is also a dancer in "Black on Black."

NCT 127 released its first Japanese EP Chain on May 23, 2018. NCT 127 released its first full album Regular-Irregular on October 12, 2018, featuring a popular English version of its lead single, "Regular", that was utilized during the group's United States' based performances. It also released a repackage on November 23, Regulate.

Doyoung continued to be a popular guest on variety shows, as well as releasing OST songs and cover on NCT's digital and social channels.

IIV. 2019: First World Tour

In January 2019, NCT 127 began its first concert tour, Neo City - The Origin, with worldwide stops until May.

The group also released its first full-length Japanese album, Awaken. The group then increased its publicity in the United States ahead of the release of its fourth EP, We Are Superhuman, including appearing at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. They also released an English version song "Highway to Heaven" of the Korean song on the EP and an accompanying video filmed in California. On October 24, 2019, NCT 127 released a live album based on the Neo City concert tour: Neo City Seoul - The Origin.

In addition to his activities with NCT 127, Doyoung continued to appear as a guest on variety shows. He appeared in the ninth season, NCT Life: Chuncheon & Hongcheon, with NCT 127 members touring parts of South Korea. He also appeared on King of the Masked Singer. He continued to release songs, including covers on NCT's YouTube channel and multiple solo and collaboration songs. He also recorded an NCT U song with his NCT 127 members Taeil, Haechan and Jaehyun for SM Station, "Coming Home."

IIVI. 2020: Neo Zone and Resonance

NCT 127 released its second full album, Neo Zone, on March 6, 2020, as well as a repackage Neo Zone: The Final Round on May 19.

Doyoung participated in the NCT 2020 project in October 2020, featuring all NCT members, and debuting two new ones. This project also included a 2-part NCT full album, NCT 2020 Resonance Pt. 1 and NCT 2020 Resonance Pt. 2. He appears as a singer on NCT 127's song "Music, Dance," as well as a part of NCT U combination units on 4 songs: "Make A Wish" in Korean and English, "From Home," "Light Bulb," and "I.O.U." He also features in the combination single "Resonance," which combines multiple songs. The entire project also appeared on NCT World 2.0, a competition-focused show.

Doyoung's powerful vocals and soaring runs captured attention during NCT 127's year-end MAMA performance and trended on Twitter. He is the singer in the black lace jacket.

IIVII. 2021: Double Million seller, musical theatre, second world tour and NCT 2021

NCT 127 released its second Japanese release, Loveholic, in February 2021. Doyoung made his acting debut as the lead of Midnight Cafe Season 3 - the Curious Stalker, as well as partnering with one of his idols, Baekhyun, on an OST song.

On June 4, NCT 127 released a digital single, "Save", a collaboration with the Korean hip hop label, Amoeba Culture. In July, he began a well-reviewed run in a musical theatre version of "Marie Antoinette." In August, Doyoung released a single as part of an NCT U unit with his NCT 127 group mate Haechan, "Maniac."

NCT 127 released its third Korean studio album Sticker on September 17, 2021, which was also certified as a 2 million seller. Additionally, Doyoung appeared in a new season of NCT Life, NCT Life in Gapyeong, and two other new shows Stick Together and Analog Trip NCT 127: Escape from Magic Island.

In October, NCT released a repackage album of Sticker, Favorite, which became a million seller. On November 3, NCT 127 released a digital single "Freeze" in collaboration with the video game Kartrider.

In December, Doyoung won three awards for his acting projects: Best Actor Award at the Seoul Webfest for Cafe Midnight Season 3 - The Curious Stalker, Best Music Award (OST) for Marseille and the Focus Award (Actor) at the AAA Awards.

Doyoung participated in the NCT 2021 project in December 2021, featuring all active NCT members at the time. This project also included a NCT full album, NCT 2021 Universe. He appears as a rapper on NCT 127's song "Earthquake," as well as a part of NCT U combination units on 3 songs: the co-title track "Universe (Let's Play Ball)", "Know Now" and the vocally focused "Good Night." He also features in the all-unit song "Beautiful." As part of NCT 2021 promotions, he also appeared in a special short digital series EuMARKJUNGsim, co-hosted by NCT group mates Mark and Jungwoo, and NCT 2021 YearDream, around the group's lore.

On December 19, NCT 127 started its second concert tour, Neo City: The Link, with 3 nights in Seoul. Doyoung featured in a solo stage with the song "The Reason Why It's Favorite," a counterpart to NCT 127's song "Favorite (Vampire.)" The song was written especially for him SM's legendary songwriter and producer Kenzie.

Doyoung appeared with the other active members of NCT in December 2021 as part of the 2021 Winter SMTOWN: SMCU Express album on the song "Hope for Kwangya." He also appeared in the accompanying New Year's Day concert.

IIVIII. 2022: More acting roles and OSTs

In February, Doyoung released an OST for "A Little More" for Soundtrack #1. He also began work on another acting role in To X Who Doesn't Love Me. In March, he featured in the NCT Lab release "coNEXTion (Age of Light)." In June, he was announced as a permanent cast member on the TV show, Master In The House. He also continued to be a popular choice to MC events, including the massive annual Dream Concert.

In September, NCT 127 released its 2 million selling fourth album, 질주 (2 Baddies). A new promotional series was also launched with the album, Fill It Up, which was similar to Stick Together, a mini reality series tied to Sticker promotions.

NCT 127 headlined at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul for their respective tours, joining only a handful of kpop groups who have headlined there. As part of the shows, Neo City: The Link+, the group debuted new mini sub-unit tracks. Doyoung featured with Jaehyun and Jungwoo on a r&b song "Can We Go Back."

In November, he appeared in a new reality series with Shotaro, Sungchan, Doyoung of NCT 127 and Jeno of NCT Dream that introduces the SM Rookies members to NCT. The series, Welcome to NCT Universe, featured all of the NCT sub-units.

Doyoung also began to appear in CFs with the luxury brand Dolce & Gabbana in Japan.

IIIX. 2023: NCT DoJaeJung and Brand Ambassador

Doyoung continued to MC awards shows and events, as well as appearing in variety series. In March 2023, Doyoung was announced as a member of the first NCT U fixed unit, NCT DoJaeJung. This group contained his 127 group mates, Jaehyun and Jungwoo. The trio had performed a group number in the Neo City the Link+ concert, as well as year-end gayos. The group's EP, Perfume, became the highest selling sub-unit debut in Hanteo history.

In May, Doyoung was announced as the first brand ambassador for Dolce & Gabbana for Korea and Japan. Later in October, he was announced as a global ambassador for the brand. He also released more OSTs and won several awards for his variety work.

In August, he featured with the rest of NCT 127 in the documentary NCT 127: The Lost Boys. He also featured with the members on the NCT all-unit album, Golden Age and its accompanying all-unit NCT Nation concerts. He appears on "Baggy Jeans", the co-title track featuring members of the original NCT U The 7th Sense Unit and"Not Your Fault."

In October, NCT 127 released its fifth album, Fact Check.

- His official NCT emoji is 🐰 (rabbit or bunny, which is the emoji he uses to describe himself, as well as a nickname.)

- Doyoung was born the same year as Kun and Ten of WayV and they often joke about who is the oldest. It's Kun by a little over a month.

- Doyoung is affectionate and empathetic, serving as a loving big brother to younger members. He's also funny, sharp-witted and outgoing.

- He was voted as the most reliable member by the other Neos.

- Doyoung is a native Korean speaker, who is also fluent in English and Japanese.
