NCT Recording Diary


  • I. Introduction

    NCT Recording Diary was a YouTube variety/web series that followed members of boy group NCT during recording sessions for multiple releases from NCT and its sub-units.


    II. Overview

    The group structure of NCT is unique among K-Pop groups due to the fact that the concept of NCT is an ever expanding group with "unlimited" members and it is comprised of several individual subunits. Currently there are 23 members in NCT, making up four individual subunits.


    NCT Recording Diary followed members of NCT during recording sessions for the all-unit NCT 2018 Empathy, and two sub-units: NCT Dream's EP We Go Up and NCT 127's albums Regular-Irregular and its repackage Regulate.


    NCT primarily records and performs in its sub-units, then unites on a regular basis for an all-unit event, such as NCT 2018 Empathy and NCT 2020 Resonance, supported by albums, concerts, special social content, TV or streaming shows and appearances.


    The Empathy album included songs by all the sub-units at the time (NCT 127, NCT Dream and NCT U), as well as the entire group. (WayV did not debut as a sub-unit until 2019.) All 18 members at the time participated on Empathy, with two new members making their debut: Jungwoo, who would join NCT 127, and Lucas, who would join WayV.


    The series also covers recording sessions for releases from two of the sub-units, NCT 127 and NCT Dream. Regular-Irregular was NCT 127's first full studio album with a repackage album, Regulate. We Go Up was NCT Dream's second EP.


    This format of behind-the-scenes footage from recording sessions continued with a later series [Uncut] that typically features sessions from major sub-unit and full unit releases 2020.


    Seven episodes were released from May 31, 2018, to Nov. 27, 2018.


    III. Episode List

    Episodes were released on the main SMTown YouTube Channel, as well as the NCT Music channel, which later merged with the main channel. These episodes are 5 to 10 minutes and much shorter than later [Uncut] recording sessions.
