well, casual fans are still Kpop fans. But can't hurt to also show them what Kpop was like in its earlier years.

Maybe because some people are more fixated on their faves, they don't truly listen to/appreciate other artists/music because their attention is elsewhere? Just a guess.

Well maybe I’m not as big a K pop fan as I thought as I’m only a casual listener these days. My interest has waned.

You make it seem like it's hard to name and know groups from 15-20 years ago, because we can just look them up and find out their influence on kpop. Since it's so easy, I'm sure many kpop stans have done it because they ARE a real fan of their music genre. You aren't obligated to listen to 1st gen or 2nd gen kpop, but knowing what their influence on kpop was would surely make you appreciate the genre to a great extent.

90% of statements with a stats number without using a proper source are just made up (including this statement).

I guess it depends on how you define each fan. I consider myself casual, but I check Kpop forum and I know a bit of how Kpop industry works and its history (as this sorta thing interest me). By your definition I'd not be considered "casual" as I can name some of old artists from 1st gen.

I don't see the point of calling someone casual because they can't name past artists. Most Kpop fans may like just an artist or a group or just a cluster of groups. They may be more passionate and engaged than someone who likes Kpop in general. By your definition the first type of fan is "casual" even if they spend lot of time and money on their singular fandom. Your criteria is a bit lacking as to make this distinction IMO.

Maybe there is an argument of calling single stan fans not really kpop fans as they may move on when their artist/group retire.

Kpop as a genre isn't tied to a style of music and more tied to fandom. This may be a complication for new fans to check past music. This may be not unique to Kpop, but pop in general. I started around 2nd/3rd gen transition years. I don't feel like actively check for 1st gen and early 2nd gen music. Pop music is a little ephemeral IMO with very few names standing the test of time.

I do agree most would fit the casual label (using a definition agreed upon by most). Kpop is also pretty young. Most of non Korean early fans would be second gen the earliest. I think they can name most groups from the gen they started just like lot of newer arrivals.

I've never thought of this distinction, but I guess I don't care about the semantics. I am a fan of K-pop, so therefore I listen to it.

i think it's also that kpop isn't a genre of music it's short for korean pop (which itself is short for popular) music which encompasses a vast array of genres itself...

there are people who are fans of 1 group which is fine. there are also people who are fans of more than one group...

but it doesn't mean that they are fans of all kpop groups or fans of all kpop generally...

I would say that people who claim to be kpop fans but don't enjoy any of the current kpop or anything past 2010 are probably not actually kpop fans either, btw.

I disagree with op. Being kpop fan means you enjoy the music of kpop acts. That's different from being a kpop stan. Kpop fans are like pop fans, rock fans, rap fans, they just enjoy listening to the music from specific genre

I don't agree that kpop STANs are supposed to know every single information and every single group too tho. Difference between stans and casual fans is that latter ones only listen to the music while stans engage in the fandom, stream, vote, buy albums and etc. I'm not supposed to know every single group out there because that's ridiculous. Everyone's focus is on what they care about so if that's newer groups only for people then that's okay

Not true at all. I bet I could grab 10 young rap fans and they would be hard pressed to name 10 artists or groups from 15 years ago. Maybe 5, and that’s only a few within the group. Same with country because modern poptry is very very different than Tanya Tucker or Waylon Jennings country. At best, they may know it because they grew up with their parents listening to it.

There's a list of artists ive been recently listening to in the about page of my profile... The underground scene is pretty rewarding

I did try to listen to the "classics" way back when; I am personally not interested, or impressed, by what the rest of the kpop industry has to offer. Now or then. I'm only a fan of my faves.

So no, I guess I would never call myself a "kpop fan", casual or otherwise.
