To be very honest, who is actually the no 1 gg in 3rd gen between Blackpink and Twice?

  • The Number 1 girl group right now 113

    1. Blackpink (91) 81%
    2. Twice (22) 19%

I keep seeing people said to wait till few years to really seeing who is really on the top for 4th gen gg. So now in 3rd gen, after all these years, who is actually the no 1 gg at the end? Is it Twice? But they are declining in sk. Is it Bp? But they are having cb once in a blue moon. I guess this is why there are still a lot of arguments from both fanbase about this.

  • It’s not even a close competition who is even asking this question in 2023 😭

Blackpink is the biggest girl group kpop has ever seen not just twice they’re bigger than SNSD and 2ne1 and literally every kpop GG in existence. Blackpink will be remembered as one of the biggest girl groups period not just kpop.

The only people who can deny this must be extremely delusional.

  • I would say picking one is perhaps impossible.

It requires you to artificially narrow parameters to favor one groups strengths over the the other.

In my opinion, in holistic assessment, both represent the 2 most important girl groups of the 3rd Generation, for different reasons.

A great way to evaluate this is to assess what they will overall be remembered for.

TWICE will be remembered as the Korean Nation's Girl Group and the group that defined and spearheaded the rise of cute Renaissance during the early 3rd age, and nearly single handedly brought back JYP to prominence. They will also be remembered for their domination of Japan and their overall status as the best selling girl group in kpop history and one of the most financially successful groups in kpop.

BLACKPINK will be remembered as the Korean girl group who defined and spearheaded the push of Korean Girl Groups into Western and non-Asian global markets. They will be remembered for spurning a wave of Girl Crush prominence in kpop overtaking cute in the later 3rd age, as well as their popularization of the Idol as SNS Influencer and Fashion branding archetypes, in addition to their massive sales and money making enterprise.

TWICE's critical mass and peak centered on early 3rd gen. While BLACKPINK's peak occured at the end.

TWICE opened the era. BLACKPINK closed it.

In this way, both are the 2 most important girl groups of their era. The legendary duo girl groups of 3rd.

Picking one or the other is a misleading framing in my opinion.

  • The better question is if Twice is still the 2nd best 3rd Generation GG.

I guess, overall they still are, because then can pull large arenas tours in Asia and the USA, no other GG can do that (outside BP)

Bun in Korea, Oh My Girl had a nice run, and their last comeback (37 on Circle) out charted Twice last comeback (94).

  • using the last cb charting in KR chart is weird :/

  • BlackPink debuted on 08/16, so I'm just giving 2015 to Twice by default, as it wasn't worth arguing RV vs. MMM vs Twice vs GFriend for 2015, and Twice had the biggest song of their era just one comeback later.

2018 I didn't really consider a tie just yet, because that's when BP first really had a huge record breaking comeback. I'd say they made it a conversation then, and I did say it could be argued, but it takes more than one comeback to take the crown in my eyes.

By 2019 they were doing Coachella and charting on our Billboard. It was not a tie at that point, and they've been the leaders ever since.

They were charting at Billboard since 2017, so if this is the requirement you should put Blackpink 2017-2023 then

There was no significant increase in popularity for BP between Square Up and Kill This Love. Rushed release and YG scandal prevented them to sell and chart better. KTL did significantly better in West indeed, but this was most an effect of them signing with Interescope and having local distribution which they didn't have for DDDD

But st that point Twice proved to be a consistent seller and were able to hold big concerts. BP had unediable bigger reach and popularity, but that's could be argued since 2018. At 2019 had stronger fandom and overall better footprint in markets where they could generate profit from like Japan

The cumulative hype and popularity BP was getting in 2019 only translated in 2020 when Interescope started to playing its cards. Lady Gaga and Selena Gomez collaboration did wonders and their Chinese fandom finally started their bulk buying. Ultimately I'd say in 2019 BP was already the bigger group but the lack of proper releases was holding them back

  • They were charting at Billboard since 2017,

It was a factor. Not a requirement.

Back in 2017, BlackPink couldn't even go head to head with Mamamoo and come out on top at least initially in Korea. Their power wasn't there yet.

And I don't recall As If It's Your Last charting on the Hot 100 at all, or even D4.

I don't have time to check that, but just to clarify, I'm talking Hot 100, not just any Billboard chart.

2017 was definitely still Twice's world. To me, 2018 was still their world but losing territory quickly to BlackPink, and then BlackPink clearly had taken over, culminating in their 2019 Coachella performance which was a huge deal.

I remember that representing the girl groups as countries was popular during 3rd gen, so I like using territories as a representation of the groups~

  • Okay, I checked. D4 did hit the Hot 100 for a week. Nothing before that song touched the chart for BP. So I'm comfortable with my year range with 2018 being debatable, but 2019 being the year where BP definitely took the crown and throne from Twice.

  • D4 peaked at 55 not that much worse than Kill This Love (41). As If It's Your Last charted only on Burbling Under (position #13)

KTL album also only sold 5k more copies than Square Up. There was some demand for BP in west but their popularity prior 2020 was always vastly overstated.

KTL had a much better peak on Spotify (4 million streams and charted on top 10, while D4 peaked in the 30s and didn't reach 1.5 million). The caveat here is the growth of Spotify in Asia. Let's that a country where BP was always huge, Philippines. In the week D4 was released the number one song did 180k, in a few months this number grewn to over 280k. Across the SEA results were similar. Of course KTL performed better still, but this can be partially attributed to the platform growth rather than increase in popularity only

In Korea is very well documented D4 performed much much better than KTL

Overall I'd say KTL was the most popular song, but barely. Even on Spotify the difference nowadays is not that big, 100 million more for KTL over D4

  • The problem for Twice is that they've lost Korea and their English charting still cant come close to Blackpink. Album sales seems to be the only area when Twice can defeat BP in the US, if you look at Hot 100 charting BP has charted every song since DDDD in this chart. Globally, Blackpink owns Spotify and Youtube. Blackpink can still chart top 2 in Korea whereas Twice has fallen off almost completely.

It was always a controversial statment but its a fact BP is stronger than Twice digitally since 2018. BP songs could get bigger ULs and had more staying power. Not no mention they could charted their whole album inside the top 100, even turn some b sides a hit. People who always claimed Twice was the most loved group in Korea were ALWAYS clueless that being liked as a celebrity is not the same as having digital power. 2NE1 used to chart better than Girls Generation even though SNSD was the most liked/loved group

BP having much stronger digital presence than Twice was always a given. Time proved that I was right all along and Twice nowadays can't even reach the top 100 of the dialy chart, whereas BP can reach the top 10 with a Blink of an eye

It sucks for my Twice girls but unfortunately, this all sounds legit. They're gonna be ok, their fanbase has exploded, and i wouldnt be surprised to see them raking in millions until they retire, they will be the first GG to sell 2M albums in their 10th year probably.

This another narrative completely false kpop liked to spread about Twice not being able to get popularity outside east Asia. Nowadays they are selling more than Blackpink in USA :skull:

And they didn't even needed to release anything drastically different. Their biggest song is The Feels

You know what is the funniest thing about all this? Twice reminds me a lot of Girls Generation. SNSD was a cute group who occasionally released non cute songs and where still MUCH bigger than any other GG in 2nd gen outside Korea, 2NE1 included.

  • They are both undisputable biggest gg in this generation. They shouldnt even competing with e/o coz they're moving differently.

First of all how many total songs do they have? Type of songs ? How frequent their comback? And many more coz no matter how much fandom/s deny this. There is disadvantage and advantage on this.

  • i love twice way more than blackpink while still liking blackpink but i have to say blackpink is number one in gen 3, about the user saying they are the biggest and bigger than SNSD, you can't really compare different gens and be fair so i rather not to say anything, blackpink is huge but let's not pretend all her records won't be broken sooner rather than later by 4th gen unless kpop started to decrease in popularity, also even tho blackpink is the biggest kpop gg the gap between first and 2nd and actually 3rd 4th 5th etc, isn't even THAT big, like if we compare BTS who is the number one boy group and compare them to the 2nd biggest boy group the gap is way bigger than comparing blackpink to the 2nd biggest girl group
