Again, we're looking back with the knowledge of who made it but in 2013 or 2014 or 2015 or whatever, it wasn't so obvious.

give it a year or two really solidify where everyone stands.

That's true. Also, not being on top doesn't mean they are not popular. Lovelyz and WJSN are having a quite good amount of fans, even from a younger age.

It's still early days though. In a the early years of 3G ggs it was big 3 + Mamamoo, GFriend, OMG etc which was pretty competitive. It was a few years later that things fizzled out with only a couple of them still fighting for top spots.

Who knows in 3 or 4 years will the same 4G ggs still be competing with one another for top dog status? Will some have scandals or public loose interest? Maybe another gg comes along and steam rolls everyone.

I guess the starting point is what one means by popular

do we look only at the top 5/10/20 groups or something else

do we go by the entire span of the 3rd generation or only certain periods of time

hindsight is 20/20 and we can say now about oh those were the top groups of the 3rd gen now that the 3rd generation (timeframe wise) is over but I'm sure we'll be saying the same thing when the 4th is over

international fanbase increased a lot since then. we should be able to keep a lot more groups alive then years earlier. dont do anything stupid please.

I don't think it's hard to process what happen to gg landscape now.

1. We don't have hybe back then, they alone might have 3-4 gg and as a big company all their gg will have instant success. While big 3 in 3rd gen only produce 1 gg for each company. Other mid companies unfortunately fuck up with their management and ruin their groups' potential. Wjsn, Clc, etc... and some of the company not even debuting any gg and focus on their bg solely.

2. This is really early to tell but obviously 3rd gen has better run for small companies' groups. Now, it's all only gg from well known companies everywhere. We don't have any nugu groups that able to make it big and can compete with the big companies' gg especially in the charts like before. And how many years since this gen started? StayC can't even stay on the top 5 now. Jyp already has 2 gg, Yg might debuting one later, hybe will have 3 soon. With this you might think this gen produce many successful gg when in the reality, it's just big companies debuted more gg in the market.

i think people are sorely mistaken if they think all of the popular fourth gen groups rn are going to be on top forever. gidle, ive, lesserafim, newjeans, aespa, itzy, they're all still pretty much at their prime.. the oldest groups here have already seen ups and downs in their charting. more groups are going to debut and blow up and some groups are going to get left in the dust. its still very early in the cycle.

+1 on 101’s point. And we also have one more big company added along with the big3 that is HYBE who have debuted two groups and JYP who have debuted 2 GG’s in 4th gen as well.

So it’s a combination of too early to tell and in general there being more GG’s debuted from big companies.

Did you forget about AOA, EXID, Lovelyz??? 3rd gen started in 2012, you know, just some groups peaked and faded earlier. Same thing will happen with current gen. StayC are kinda already going Lovelyz steps, strong start, fast decline. Lets find out who will be AOA and EXID of 4th gen and then eventually Gfriend and Mamamoo. Twice, BP and RV are basically the last standing ggs, but a we had a lot of them shining back in the day.
