well idk about dancing so hard it becomes distracting but there ARE a few idols who overdance in a group performance. Hyoyeon herself admitted of doing this during snsd’s rookie years since she had so few lines to stand out so it’s not even a thing only fans say lol, the idols themselves are aware

Dancing or not, not showing energy on stage is way more boring to watch.

Yikes not @ people in this thread not being able to tell the difference between properly executing dance moves and unnecessarily exaggerating them There’s a world apart between not slacking off / being sloppy when performing and aggressively exaggerating every move to the point it looks unnatural and not aesthetically pleasing to watch anymore, and many of yall are confusing the two loll
-
I agree, as overly exaggerated dancing often looks messy. When some people doing overdance, they loses their control and balance, the dance moves doesn't look clean, looks messy, which kills watch the pleasure. I'm not talking about high-energy good dancing, by the way.

Personally, I found that Chaeyeon used to overdance in the early Iz*one days. She eventually learnt to tone it down and blend better with the other 11 members but at first she just put way too much energy and power in which didn't flow as well.
However, Chaeyeon has seriously developed as a dancer since.

I agree to some extent. I don't think underperforming looks better, I'd rather prefer that they all try to do their best but i do agree that sometimes it looks off when someone is doing too much (or too less).
In BTS, for example, there are some great dancers but they don't go out of their way to show just how good they are in group performances. They will usually try to blend in with the group so the overall performance look harmonious (even though you can still see who are the better dancers).
On the other hand, and this might be an unpopular opinion, I wasn't a fan of Kai's style of dancing, specially in EXO's latest releases. Individually, he might have been performing flawlessly, but when you tried to look at the whole group, he would just stand out too much (in a negative way) for me. Is his fault for doing his best? No. Is everyone else underpeformig then? Also no. But imo, when you are in a group you will have to compromise at some point so the group dynamics don't feel off or unbalanced (this doesn't mean he has to dance badly to compensate, but either he has to level his energy with the rest or the rest will have to level their energy with his )
