Wonder Girls peak was bigger than 2NE1 peak but 2NE1 was more consistent throughout their career.
Wonder Girls lost some momentum after they got back from America.

I would say 2ne1 they were more consistent. Wonder Girls multiple hiatus hurt them.

WG going to America broke them.

On the other hand, I still wonder until now how big T-ARA could have been if no scandal happened at all. They have back to back hits, consistent promos, three members acting, good in variety shows, and they snatched SK, Japan, China, and Vietnam. Eunjung was in Dream High and Jiyeon was an "it" girl; Hyomin was doing good too.

That thread is weird cause if we go by stats 2NE1 is still by all metrics the 2nd most popular 2nd gen GG. I Am The Best alone has more streams on Spotify than any SNSD single & in terms of monthly listeners they're only behind SNSD. WG didn't replace them anywhere lol what kind of fictional reality

The ONLY answer is 2NE1. I was here for the WAR between Sones & Blackjacks for that number one spot. SNSD (GG back then)won but 2NE1 gave a good fight. At one point earlier on Wonder Girls and SNSD swapped places. I wish this site didn't keep clearing things out cuz A LOT of that stuff was right on here for you to read though how nasty it got. A lot of the older admins know this.

They had the bigger peak ig and earlier on they were the #1 girl group...but JYP shipped them to America and the rest is history

WG was ahead of SNSD until 2009 happened; SNSD had Gee and Genie plus a couple of above decent to smashing girl group debuts and comebacks including 2NE1. Meanwhile, WG was shipped off to the US.

2NE1 weren't any bigger than these other groups at their peaks, no matter how "nasty" it got here. This place doesn't decide a group's popularity.

They all had their moments tbh
Wonder girls was HUGE in korea with back to back hits, Sohee's "Omona" was really popular and they even charted in billboard Hot 100.
Kara had a lot of popular songs too and was REALLY strong in japan, they were the first korean gg to hold a concert in tokyo dome.
T-ara also had back to back hits and jiyeon was an it girl but other members were popular too. They were also successful in japan and specially in china.
2ne1 had the biggest success in the west at that time and a lot of hits in korea aswell. They were also involved in fashion and good at touring.
SISTAR was mainly successful in korea but almost all of their songs were hits with the gp.
There were other popular groups like Brown Eyed Girls, 4minute, After School, F(x), Secret, Apink.
Overall if I had to pick one, I'd say wonder girl

I'm sure the owners of this site appreciate your glowing endorsement, but thinking it actually matters one iota who was using this particular Internet forum back then is comical on a cosmic scale. Nowhere in the OP was Allkpop even mentioned. It's asking about OVERALL POPULARITY.

My telling Op they would have been able to find the answer in the archives (with Korean sources) should not have your blood pressure this raised unless you were an admin back then and had all that info removed. I'm pretty sure stats-wise overall it's 2NE1 even in the media about 2nd gen now they always get mentioned after SNSD(the groups are perfect foils if this was a book tbh).
Still, 2nd gen girl group rivalries were a trip, like even though SNSD was indisputably number 1, the competition below them was hardcore even if there weren't as many groups as today.
