It's just fan stupidity. In reality all groups and idols paved the way. If you didn't have rain tvxq BigBang psy there wouldn't have been that early interest in kpop let alone Korea. Back then the internet social media and cultural spread was much much slower and visible than it is today. Most people couldn't even name a Korean or point out Korea on a map prior to 2001.

Agencies and idols slowly evolved to gain western auidences things started to become translated, companies began directly selling to the west and western record stores. Instead of people having to use ebay or some expensive middle man service to get kpop goods.

Forgien fans outside of Asia were rarely if ever allowed to join fandoms officially, and fansigns were a much stricter affair. Voting was also held out of reach. Once rain, Psy BigBang, exo and infinite set the stage for everything kpop bloomed. Many of these people doing their first tours in the west and slowly increasing Korean visibly and interest more people joined up. BigBang set the bar for idols producing their own music. Infinite set the bar for the best dancers and synchronous dancing with flashy moves the member L aka Myungsoo set the bar for kpop visual as everyone was judged by the L standard that's still used to this day. G dragon set the fashion and art trend evey year and is one of the most admired and inspiration for new groups. Even to this day a recent government survey showed in individual rankings g dragon still beat out Jungkook as number one and kookie number 2. That says Alot considering the group including himself haven't promoted in years and he still matches or in some cases surpass the most powerful group in history.

BTS is great a huge boom to our economy and culture, and their achievements legendary. But the reality is they would not be where they are now without all the current/previous generations before them. If kpop and our culture and thought process towards outsiders had been the way it was in 2001 in 2022 BTS would not have made it out of Asia. So many things were not ready yet like it is now. Tldr they all paved the way for each other to succeed.

Remember most idols including BTS inspiration to even began thinking of being an idol was g dragon or rain.

about it. It's a big WASTE OF TIME

Threads like this are so interesting to me because when I first joined the site everyone acted like K-pop growing in the west especially in the U.S was the downfall of K-pop. Now look at the growth. On the topic tho fandoms can’t gatekeep success. Even if people react negatively to something it doesn’t change much. Think about all the negative BTS got and still get and how it doesn’t affect their success. I don’t why K-pop fans complain so much about gatekeeping now as if second gen stans weren’t trying to force K-pop pop quizzes for entry into K-pop. That was more successful gatekeeping. The gatekeeping people complain about today can’t even stop people from trending on Twitter.

So now kpoppies who ridiculed BTS and say their faves don’t need western validation is crying because some little backlash from another kpop fandom?

You guys are lucky that ARMY were the ones being at the front fighting xenophobia every step of the way.. you guys cry about kpop fandom, you haven’t met the western fandoms yet. You guys haven’t had to face racist media and preconceived prejudice about kpop. ARMY and BTS have and we make it easier for you guys so you don’t have to.

All this talk about Rain, Psy, Bigbang paving the way. So they paved the way for the 3rd gen to be more known. Now why can’t you guys admit that BTS paved the way for kpop to be more mainstream in the US and especially making album sales becoming the highest that they have ever been?

You don’t pave one road. There’s plenty of roads and sometimes the road gets longer.
