Is Aespa Sm’s most successful girl group?

they're on their way I think ^ give them a couple more comebacks
-
-
Hard to compare with peaks as 2nd Gen was a completely different time to current kpop! Most if not all charts have updated and new charts introduced! And then the global aspect
All people can take from this is SM remains relevant and produces a top group every generation lol

While you're all discussing success, all I know is the following:
S.E.S paved the way to my heart.
SNSD pioneered the way into my heart.
f(x) gave me heart palpitations.
Red Velvet continues to soothe my heart.
Aespa, well, they set up shop in my heart.

you think we cant adjust past costs according to the current inflation?

Yes! I’m not doing the calculations though
my point is a concert ticket or album price cost way more today by default so profit will naturally be higher than 20 years ago!
K-pop has expanded globally, different streaming platforms and social media which was still fresh ( different ways of making money) when Snsd were active and didn’t exist during SES time
It’s hard to compare fairly
-
Successful means money. Aespa already made more money than SNSD?
they’ve already sold more albums so

Dont have to be fair. Just have to be as accurate as possible.

SNSD???

SNSD were the uncontested 2nd gen #1 top tier girl group in practically all areas in their peak years.
I haven't been paying that close attention, but has Aespa already achieved that uncontested #1 level in these times? If not, then it's still SNSD.
If we're talking international success and album sales though, then Aespa might have surpassed SNSD: K-pop has exploded in popularity internationally and album sales are easily fivefold what they were in 2nd gen; many current gen groups have surpassed even the top 2nd gen groups when it comes to international metrics.

i don''t think so.. as much as i ADORE aespa but snsd in their prime was untouchable but hopefully aespa will come in second
-
-
that's so funny to see how people change their mind with successfull people
i was sure that one way or another aespa would be very successfull with their concept
but it makes me laugh when i see users who were saying " aespa will flop there's no way that they can be successfull with their concept " and calling them the first flop group of SM
to know discussing if aespa is the most successfull gg of SM x))
-
^THIS!!
I mean I'm a pretty big aespa fan, too, if not an actual MY who knows all their real names and follows all their reality content or whatever, but are you trying to set aespa up, or what??!
SNSD were the #1 Kpop girl group of their era, which everyone knows began Kpop as an international phenomenon today as we know it, arguably the biggest Kpop group in 2nd generation PERIODT (boys and girls included!) who started the entire Hallyu Wave for K-pop groups, which began in Asia and spread along to the West and everywhere else, (along w/Super Junior w/their song Sorry Sorry and TVXQ in Japan), and are the literal blueprint for like 90% of Kpop girl groups who were ever made/existed!! All the ones who aren't using 2NE1 as a blueprint anyway. (Or I suppose NJZ/NewJeans. And even they are just like SNSD in their debut era ITNW w/an underaged concept and extra y2k flair as a twist 🙄)
Kids these days really need to learn some respect, (and something about Kpop, too), sheesh! 🙄
-
They are not even close to having the impact SNSD had
-
Not yet, but there's nothing to say they can't get there.
SNSD are iconic, arguably still the most iconic gg, but there wasn't as much competition back then.
I don't think success has to correlate with Aespa being the biggest group of their generation.
There are other metrics to compare like album sales, touring stats, charting, social media stats and so on.
As the kpop landscape has changed, so should the means by which we measure success.

T-Ara
Brown Eyes Girls
Girls' Day
Just to name a few.
What competition does aespa have outside of
?
And NewJeans is easily the most popular of that grouping.
Nobody in Korea would put aespa on the SNSD level. We know this because last year there was a Gallup Survey on the most iconic girl groups

I dont care.
2nd gen had to compete with 2nd gen only.
WG - irrelevant after 2-3 years when they went to the US
2ne1 - mid version of blackpink
Kara - relevant for a couple of years only
T-Ara - scandal blew them up
Sistar - digital monsters with no fandom
Brown Eyes Girls - better version of mamamoo, but barely considered idols at the time
APink - peaked well after the rest of the groups above
Girls' Day - shortest peak of them all
Also, I said not yet. So stop crying and you can come at me when I say they've surpassed them and we can argue then.

I dont care.
Irrelevant. It's clear you don't care about being objectively wrong or you wouldn't double down on such an awful take
2nd gen had to compete with 2nd gen only.
LMAO
As if 3rd gen wasn't completely winding down by the time the 4th gen took off.
BP hasn't released a group comeback since damn 2022, and the rest of the top girl groups of 3rd gen are either barely active or comeback once a year, with nowhere near the digital dominance they used to display
The main competition for aespa has been other 4th gen girl groups.
If anything, it's LESS competitive, because aespa only has to deal with other girl groups, while SNSD and even Twice/BP had to deal with MASSIVE boy groups like Super Junior, Shinee, Big Bang, BTS and Exo, to name a few, who all charted way better than any present day boy group.

I don't care. Miss me with your caveats and qualifications. This is still COMPETITION, making your statement OBJECTIVELY WRONG.
But please triple down. I've been suppressing my need for argumentation for a while, and what better thread than this one?
Make my day.
Nobody on this forum knows girl groups better than me. Bring it

Tbh it’s not far fetched to say that Aespa has way more competition than SNSD indeed.
Other than SNSD NO OTHER GG sold close to them. That’s not the case now at all. Even touring was only done by very few groups. GG’s only had Korea and maybe a little of Japan to consider and absolute no other major music criteria.
Looking at just the digitals actually SNSD was indeed beaten by many of their counter parts in various stages of their career much like Aespa.
We now have far more criteria than before and that’s why it’s more difficult to rank GG’s.
And this also plays into how we remember groups as well. SNSD’s fandom support just seemed far more powerful thank everyone else so it’s easy to forget the rest and actual digital performances.
That’s why like I said at the beginning it’s very difficult to rank groups then and now because times are very different.
There’s no category in which GG’s fully lack in any more. You can even compare them with BG’s and they won’t lose all than much.
-
Not this comparison again. How many times we have to tell new Kpop fans that comparing groups of different era is not fair? SNSD is still on the top after 18 years. If any other girl group can achieve that, we can have a conversation. Until then, it's the comparison is pointless!
Aespa is probably in the TOP3 most poplar girl groups of THIS DECADE, but they're not even close to groups like SNSD, and never will be, if I'm being honest. And they don't have to, btw.
Put this post in the "recency bias" entry in a textbook.
I have a better idea! Put Aespa (or any other group after the 2nd gen) in the 2nd gen, remove their social media and streaming numbers and sales, and the high budget, let's compare them after that!
The 2nd gen was literally the most toxic gen with girl groups, and SNSD changed all that.

I don't even know what to say after reading this nonsense!🤣🤣🤣
Calling 2NE1 the mid version of BP, Sistar a digital monster with no fandom and BEG as the better version of Mamamoo.
Not to mention the biggest bs: "2nd gen had to compete with 2nd gen only."
Do you live under a rock or something?
G-dragon literally topping the charts and charting with multiple songs, Apink's Eunji charting better than Jisoo and most new gen groups with an unpromoted special Single.
SNSD in 2022 charted in the TOP5 with their Anniversary comeback FOREVER1, after 15 YEARS! So, tell me again, who are they competing with? Because literally beat every freakin' new gen groups and soloists!
