Sejeong and then Suzy
That Emma Stone performance in Business Proposal completely pulled me into kdramas after I'd written them all off for years.
I forgot Krystal, even though I loved her in Crazy Love. Oops. Let me add her as an option. Technically, I watched a Victoria drama too, though it was a C-Drama--Find Yourself.
Bona and I'm biased because I didn't watch the others

She did such a great job in Uncanny Counter and Business Proposal. It's funny I didn't realize she was an idol until she had her solo comeback. I was like wait a minute I thought she was just an actress. I was happy to hear her music because she's so talented, and her voice helped me during that period.
Would Bibi fit into idol turned actress or does she fall into musician turned actress? I feel she's one of the best and she owned every role I've seen her in
Does Jang Nara count as an idol?
After all she is the only person to have won Daesangs in both singing and acting.
And then, idols who turn actors, largely cease to be idols. Yoona, Suzy etc , music falls drastically.
In any case, my choices would be
Seo Hyun Jin, IU, Sejeong, (Lee Junho, Im Siwan for males )- have delivered some critically appreciated works. Not just Romcom eye candy.
The most disappointing is Hyeri, she was perfect for Reply 1988, but since then she seems incapable of moving beyond that, every role she plays is very reminiscent of Deoksun.
DAMN! I wasn't expecting my Sejeong being on top! 😅
Anyway, this is my list:
1. IU - Not even a question, the only Idol who got a nomination at Cannes and probably the most versatile one
2. Sejeong - not as close, but close 2nd
3. Seohyun SNSD - I think she's really underrated, even tho she's versatile as well, and since she left SME, she's MUCH better!
4. Yoona
Yoona and Suzy are on the same level. Both had really good and bad roles, but they're good actors.
I don't think I've seen anything from Krystal or Hyeri, at least not as main actors. Sooyoung is also good, but I feel like she's not picking the best roles. The badass b-tch suits her, but the romcom girl is not so much.
Also, I have to mention Eugene from S.E.S, and Uhm Junghwa (not sure we can call her an Idol, tho), because they're great, and I think RV's Joy has a great potential too.

the fact that 99% of people completely forgot she was an idol and actually think that she's been an actress forever is a proof that her acting skills was so good that it completely overshadow her idol era
and now she become one of the most well know actress in korea

Don't get why Suzy is so low for many of you when she ain't playin one dimensional characters like some other mentioned idols turned actresses.
Sejeong is great that said her recent dramas were not level but two levels below Business Proposal.
IU is a soloist not a gg member therefore it's a different story.

Seohyun and Sooyoung are so good but :
- Seohyun doesn't play in a lot of drama who get a lot of exposure internationally so international fans doesn't know her really as an actress and underestimate her she really shine in the "time"
she needs to do more emotional character
and like you said Sooyoung doesn't pick the right role
i would love to see her play more strong female lead character and not the weak one who need a guy to save her
or play an evil character

Lots of stuff. She's been acting since 2012! She's been in 4 movies like Gangnam Blues with Lee Min-ho, Making of a Murderer, and The Great Battle with Jo In-sung.
And 7 k-dramas staring way back in 2012 with 2 million episode family dramas, and continuing to today with leading roles in things like Orange Marmelade, a teen drama, and My Country the New Age, a historical romance, and Summer Strike a murder mystery romance.
She's an old hand lol..... Don't forget about her!

I'll be honest. I didn't forget her. I just wasn't sure she should be listed with the A-Listers based on my drama watching history.
But I just looked at her wiki and I've literally not seen anything she's acted in
Light Shop is on my list though, and I see she's in that, so that will change soon.

But it has one of the most relaxing opening themes in K-Drama history
What a shame that the ML turned you off from the drama. Sooyoung was incredible in her role.
also it's a bit sad that international fans completely disregard UEE as an actress
