why APINK is never included in the discussion for top 2nd gen girl group ?

    i dont think people ever realize how BIG apink were during their peak, and plus they have massive fandom

    Mr Chu, No No No and LUV is a massive trilogy hits, and they also have Naeun and Eunji as their it girls

    but i never see apink included in the top gg discussion along with SNSD, 2NE1,KARA,T-ARA and WG (SISTAR to some extent)

    gfriend is known as one of the bigges gg during 3rd gen, and gfriend & apink have so much similarity in term of peak and popularity (apink is slightly bigger than gfriend tho) but u dont see people mentioning APINK

    I think it depends. f(x) is really popular back then and their earlier songs are hits. Their Electric Shock Hot Summer era was huge, and like you said they have better sales (I think?)


    Apink also has huge hits. To be fair both groups got less popular when new groups started to become more popular but I feel f(x) has some edge in terms of members popularity as well. Especially Sulli and Krystal, compared to any of the Apink members (Naeun was big though, then Eunji). That itself also gives a sense that the group is bigger.


    I think right now though things might have changed, Apink is still active in fact they are going to comeback in April.


    That's why I said maybe f(x)/T-ara because f(x)/T-ara had huge peaks but Apink is still active and they actually have a huge range of hits.


    I do however still think they are behind the SNSD/2NE1/SISTAR/KARA/WG gang, those groups were HUGE HUGE

    if not mistaken, Apink peak much later after SNSD 2NE1 FX MISS A


    Apink was definitely up there during their NoNoNo Mr. Chu LUV trilogy run, but it was really short-lived. From Remember onwards, they were gradually going downhill. Only One didnt win any trophy on music show at all and didnt chart well.


    Fx definitely did better than Apink. Coming from SM already gave them huge advantage. Their physical sales are great, and they have big hits like danger, hot Summer, electric shock. Krystal + Sulli are also super popular

    There are just so many big 2nd Gen GGs to really properly rank them

    Because they didn’t have something that really set them apart. They weren’t having multiple digital hits, they went selling loads of albums, they didn’t tour much, they weren’t making much waves outside Korea and so on.


    Other groups had 1 or @@@d45800f9-30f8-40cd-bada-6b8ec5604a6f@@@ categories where they excelled and could be considered one of the top groups for their categories which could then put them into the top gg tiers.

    Because they were not.


    Top usually means SNSD as the #1.


    Then arguments for 2NE1, wonder girls, Sistar, Kara and maybe T-ara.


    Everyone else falls below those groups, even Apink.


    You can say they are similar to say Itzy in the 4th gen hierarchy.


    Or what Mamamoo was for the 3rd generation.

    Like people said their peak was not exactly in the same time, back then they were considered the ''new SNSD'' because all the groups that you ask them to be compared had already peaked when they were rising, similar situation to AOA, Girls day or EXID. For reference for new fans it's probably going to be like Gidle eventually, peaking after Twice/BP/RV... and still peaking when the new wave of top ggs is coming out, but probably going to start being more inactive soon, so they will probably be left out of the discussions of both gens in the long run.


    Anyway I agree they're often underrated by ifans (similar situation to Gfriend in this case as you mentioned) probably because their concept was different and their success internationally wasn't that big. Anyway if we talk about korea they're definitely bigger than f(x) and probably even Kara. Eunji was also one of the most popular 2nd gen members in general (as an actress too).

    because they weren't. Lots of 2nd gen groups had a couple of hit songs. Just look at AOA...they had miniskirt, short hair, like a cat, heart attack, good luck and they had Seolhyun who was even bigger than Naeun. Despite that, not a top 2nd gen gg.

    Apink was more of a 2.5 GG, like Girl's Day, AOA and SISTAR. I think back then though SISTAR wasn't really ranked above Apink, SISTAR had huge hits but I remember they lacked a core fandom, that's why they really didn't tour much, I think they focused more on festivals. Apink on the other hand had a really strong fandom, and they did tour a lot.

    Mamamoo was competitive with all the other top girl groups of their era, specifically in digital performance, at the peak of their powers. So I don't get why you compared them to APink, when people are claiming the latter wasn't a top 5 group of their generation.


    It's highly questionable to single out Mamamoo. They've gone head-to-head with both Blackpink and Red Velvet (2016 and 2017 respectively), and went 4 straight years with a group or individual release hitting #1 on the charts.


    I know you likely just threw that comment in at the end of your overall point, but I'm just personally tired of people insinuating Mamamoo wasn't a legitimate top tier girl group at the height of their powers.


    GFriend would be a much stronger comparison, given they also had a huge 3-hit combo of songs (Glass Beads, Me Gustas Tu, Rough) before slowly tapering off in popularity.

    Apink and Gfriend do have the most music show wins by a single song.


    So you are probably right, Gfriend is a better comparison than Mamamoo


    "LUV" scored 17 wins.


    "Rough" had 15 wins.


    Only SNSD "Lion Heart" has as many wins as them with 15 wins.
