I mean I think people made it into a setup -- it wasn't really. 88rising has been looking to bring in a big act for attention, since they don't get too much press -- Rich Chiddy, Dumbfoundead & Rina (Hatsuke too) generally are known to be some of the best performers at Coachella but I'd say only Chiddy and Rina have press outside.
Esp with a big craze in virtual/techno stuff it makes sense they'd invite Aespa. Chungha is their only mainstream kpop artist signed to them (alongside Jackson who was there) who I was surprised to see not come but again, her company is going through stuff. And TBF, Jackson's performance was easily the worst of the lot...
The point of Coachella is to showcase new styles of music/performances, it's not really a status symbol unless you're a headliner. Again, hence why Epik High -- they're perfect for Coachella. Week 1 (Blackpink) is generally more of a fandom/status thing but Week 2 (Aespa, Raveena, Miku) is generally more music-based.
I think Aespa achieved what they came for: they have super hard songs to sing (can only think of 2-3 other groups with harder songs) and they performed pretty well for Coachella.
Don't have to be a top group to perform there, nor do you need to be a top performer. The crowd (for Coachella this year) was kinda average but again, even Meg Thee Stallion had a lukewarm reception (who had crazy energy). The real music festival with like crazy crowds has always been Lolla.
The real setup this year...was Mariah the Scientist vs Tony Lanez but you didn't hear that from me.

And my hyphothesis is that SM perfectly knew how the performance will turn out. Why would they send a group that's never performed live to a stage like Coachella otherwise?
SM knows that MY's will defend them so they doubled down on the mediaplay to rile up the other fandoms even more and then finally play the pity card.
Heck they even have an anti-hater song ready for it.

good for them
want some tissue with that?

Don't most groups have antihater songs?
Also anyone with foresight could have seen that Aespa would get a divisive reaction -- they always have. The point was to prove they could do it (esp to the fanbase) and have fun. Also COVID restrictions in Korea are really unpredictable, so sending them to Coachella in that regard isn't too farfetched.
Also you know the first group who was going to go to Coachella was Crayon Pop right...it's for the atmosphere.
Most companies do mediaplay to rile up fandoms so that's a given -- like YG trended consistently for their really bad Arashi mediaplay. Like look at Cube 3 days ago.
The point was attention which they certainly have now.
