How unusual is for boygroups to have strong vocal lines?

  • I don't consider monsta x new generation tho, they debuted same year as gfriend and twice. Kihyun is part of the older batch of main vocals who really impressed me, so far I haven't seen that much in 4th gen, and like you mentioned jongho from ateez, I know he can sing but even as someone who is not an expert I noticed the way he does high notes can be damaging him? The rest of 4th gen guys in Kingdom weren't really stand-outs imo

My point is that while each boygroup may have their one great main vocal (like ateez and oneus, groups I noticed sing well) the rest of members fall short and sometimes they even drag the whole group down, while previous generations had groups like TVXQ, exo or btob, where almost all members are vocalists and even these that didn't have that position, were above capable.

idk I don't stan Monsta X I assumed they were "newer" due to how many stans they're gaining these past few years. As for Jongho, it doesn't seem to be damaging him. He is doing just fine, he has never failed it and he has never said it was damaging his throat so I wouldn't say it is or say its a downfall of his because he is continuously singing live and giving amazing performances.

I can see why you think that but that's the point of having a main vocal. There's one that hits the high notes and sings most of the song and the other members that are there for support and to help the song and the main vocalist progress. That doesn't mean they're bad vocalists or not strong however. Take The Boyz for example, they have main 2 vocalists Sangyeon and New. Their lead vocalists, Hyunjae, Kevin, and Jacob, are amazing support. In any other group, they'd most likely be a main vocalist. But due to Sangyeon and New's strong vocals, they are lead vocalists. New and Hyunjae, who are known for their powerful and sweeter voices, covered Baekhyun's parts in Call Me Baby perfectly. A lead vocalist and a main vocalist working together, that's what good support is. Despite being lead vocalists, Kevin and Jacob hit a lot of The Boyz high notes even alibiing whistle notes in some of their songs. The same can even be said for Skz, while Seungmin is the main vocalist, I.N, Han, Bang Chan, and Lee Know are great support. I'm not a professional I only know base level vocal technique and it's very clear there are some great singers with great potential. Plus the fact that they're new, they aren't gonna debut sounding like they're in a high note competition. Also let's not forget that hitting a high note doesn't make you a good vocalist or a strong vocalist. It just means you found hit a good pitch, something anyone can do. High notes are impressive but are mistakely taken as proof for who can or can't sing.

I'll check out more singing contents from these groups now, what you said make me interested on them. I'm not an expert but I think there's a few YouTube channel that make accurate rankings so I'll check that too, I want to see how they rank in 4th gen and in general

  • I'm not sure whether they are the last 3rd gen group or one of the first in 4th gen, but I would like to add 'The Boyz' to the conversation. They have 2 MV, 3 LV and even their sub vocalists like Sunwoo and Haknyeon have shown their skills, especially on B-sides (check out the song 'Scar' everyone). Every time I listen to one of their encores I'm pleasantly surprised.
