kpop is not its own genre. It's just POP sung in korean. But it's still pop, and pop is universal and can sound different and similar depending on the song, not the country. And lots of kpop songs are not produced by koreans.

sorry but sm and jyp are desperate af, jyp with the shitty eng versions of itzy songs and sm with basically everything new they try
bighit recently started being pushy with bts's all english songs but they still release tons of songs with their old vibes, same with yg.
try to tell me sm has released anything on the level of fx, snsd, early shinee in the last 2 years and i'll laugh. at least jyp has day6 and yg and bighit are somewhat maintaining quality. any non rv song in sm cannot be distinguished from group to group. nct superm aespa shinee (not all but most new songs for shinee) and super junior could be given one of any of the other group's songs no prob.

I take their album sales with a grain of salt. There are also rumours about sm cheating counting korean sales as sales in the u.s, which doesnt seem that farfetched when the streams of superm or nct are ridiculously low in the u.s

I think SM has a signature sound that they keep but they have taken something out of the individuality of the artists.
As another user said a lot of their new songs could be sung by any of their group but RV.
And seeing how they are pushing it too hard but release kinda dated music, even for kpop, it seems to me that they don't actually know what they are doing to keep kpop alive.

SM's western push has objectively been stronger than JYPs. You don't even have to look at Wonder Girls to see how much stronger SM has been.

I mean, I mentioned wonder girls because of their results back then not to exemplify jyp's or sm's efforts. But yeah sm has always pushed the most, perhaps even more than bh with bts yet they still haven't had an impact outside of a couple groups selling albums recently

It's incredibly hilarious seeing fans of groups that release nothing but unimaginative, generic, repetitive music, groups that are almost selling their souls to pander to the west come at SM artists for being uncreative and pandering to the west too. Is it lack of self awareness or just shamelessness? At least SM groups DON'T change their identity for anyone's approval and never changed their music style even if it flops.
And to the comedian talking about SM artists sounding the same, not when you stan Blackpink whose discography is literally an extension to 2NE1's lmao.
