I just feel like why k-pop seems to be losing steam overall is the fact that we no longer have a girl group to represent the international side of things. Aespa is huge in SK and do well internationally, but they are not an adequate replacement for NJs or BP, who are in a different tier internationally. What do you think? Hopefully with BP and BTS returning, it will breathe some life back into kpop. I'll leave you all to ponder this for the day.
K-pop needs another NewJeans or Blackpink

-
Kpop need Lee Soo Man

-
Yea I agree, it clearly peaked during covid time and it's not even just huge popularity that is missing, BP and NJs were good "gateway" groups for kpop.
-
Without NewJeans. It feels... flat. Hopefully, aespa will be able to inject some life back into it...
What doesn't help when it comes to having another Blackpink-like group is that you now have several GGs from the YG family, and extended family. Before, there'd only be a one. Now, all the efforts from Teddy and YHS are spread out to 1... 2... 3... 6 GROUPS (including that one funded by YG or smth)?! It doesn't help to have so many, when that time, effort, and attention, could've been paid to just creating on GG.

Kpop is in a dire state without them. They brought life into the industry and are the perfect starter group. Hopefully Aespa can fill the void but I have my doubts with how the teaser sounded. We don't really have many groups pushing music forward and NewJeans was the popular group doing that. It also hurts that NewJeans was the group that people included among pop acts and didn't separate them with the kpop label. Many music publications I read included NewJeans when talking about top songs of the year.

Tbh, I can't really process your points in the last 3 sentences. Yet, my insomnia's got my brain in airplane mode now, so maybe it's just me.

Hey! Your pfp is back!

HELL NO! Again, HELL NO! What Kpop needs is a normal group with great discography and small fandom without toxicity! Not overhyped groups with average or worse songs.
No, I'm not talking about NJ or BP, I'm saying this in general.
The MAIN REASON Kpop is BORING is because it's too Westernized. Only smaller groups doing actual Kpop music.
BTS, TWICE, BP and NJ maybe popularized Kpop in the West, but that's not really a good thing, and I wouldn't say they should represent Kpop even tho this might hurt the feeling of some fans. Especially, because pretty much all of them are basically a Western group not a real Kpop anymore. Except maybe NJ, because they didn't even have a real journey yet.
-
Kpop needs great groups music wise, concept wise and funny wise. Before BP we had fun in kpop regardless of their international position imo. The same with njz, but now we are stuck with groups that while have good music, lack passion and personality. Kpop as a whole isn't iconic anymore.
BP and njz sure helped kpop, but I count Twice, RV, MMM, Exo, AOA, SNSD, wonder girls, BB etc etc etc the vast kpop groups as important to bring happiness and fun again.
Kpop never counted just in one group, it was always the combination of so many different and iconic groups and idols. Nowadays we don't even have iconic soloists (from groups) from new gens like we had in the past gens.
-
No, it doesn't. And I don't see any points in this thread that really push that argument forward. It just seems like people are bored with the music coming out, and it's fine if you are, but K-pop isn't in a dire state just because you are bored. Dire state for you interest is as far as I would give you.
Especially since this forum and other English-speaking communities, K-pop really just seems to mean "groups from big companies/soloists from big groups/popular mid tiers, often females."
-
-
It's all good. I was trying to state they're the kpop group western publications would include among western pop acts. It's rare for a kpop group to get that treatment and NewJeans were the group getting that treatment.

lol

I'm using this thread as evidence as to the relative weakness of 4th gen in order to further prop up future 2nd gen supremacy discussions by the way

-
-
No offense, but both BP and NJ are copycats as well. They didn't invent anything. BP is basically the pretty version of 2NE1 or even Brown Eyed Girls.
And what NJ did concept wise is basically just a 2YK concept that many others did before them. The only difference is both BP and NJ was (and maybe still) more popular.

Need another of them? Well... no. Teddy and YSH are busy flopping in trying to generate the next BP, and will fail again and again.
As for another NJ? Wait another ten years for that to happen again. I'd rather have another MHJ x LSM collab with something experimental, like how the production of f(x), who are superior to NJ.

not really aespa is giving to me everything i need in kpop and what nj, blackpink, or most gg didn’t give me
- hard hitting music and addictiv3
- great concept and aesthetic
- try new things with how they present their album
- musical diversity
Aespa is the only 4th gen groups that actually remind me why i fell in love with kpop in the past

"another" NJs and BP will do nothing but plague kpop with an endless cycle of recycled formulas.
The funny thing is I'm kind of saying the exact opposite of this. By "another NJs or BP", I mean another fresh group that gets people excited and has both domestic success and very broad international appeal, acting as a good gateway into the genre. And of course k-pop does not NEED this, but I feel it is currently missing. Definitely not saying we need more groups that act and sound like BP/NJs

Or we can start listening to nugus or any group we usually wouldn't give a chance. Fandoms can be great but oftentimes I find that kpop fans lock themselves into boxes too much... Kpop isn't boring, y'all are just looking in the wrong places!! And I think everyone doomposting about kpop being over or dead or failing only keeps y'all from enjoying what is being put out!!

-
Blackpink were the last group to capture the interest of both Asian and Western markets with the members and New Jeans were the last to capture these markets with music. I don't see any current groups capable of either. As we all know 4th gen music has been either too niche (i.e. "noise music") or too generic and everyone is bored to tears. And there are few groups like IVE and AESPA with 1 or 2 extremely popular members but none with the stacked line-up of a Blackpink or BTS where every member had significant fame and solo potential

Well said. If all you look at is the top companies and no further then expect to be disappointed. I have said it so many times, stop looking at the big named companies and you will stop feeling disappointed. There is so much out there you people refuse to see because it's not popular enough. That's your loss and your fault.

But I will happily stream, especially SMORZ!

This is a pretty interesting statement (I agree with it too).
