Looks like nobody else is going to talk about BABYMONSTER flopping in Korea, so I will

  • I tried to refrain from being the one to make this thread, but after some provocation, I'm going to address the elephant in the room

What the hell is going on? A YG girl group just had a full album roll out with plenty of promo, and they couldn't get a single song in the MelOn Top 100.

I don't use the word "flop" lightly ever, but...that's what you have to call this. YG himself is a man who got pissed when 2NE1 didn't have a #1 song, and now his only active girl group couldn't get a #100 song

And I don't want to see a god damn word about Korea charts not mattering, because I see ALL of you losing your shit any time your favorite artists and groups do numbers on them, here and on all other platforms. So let's skip the "lol Korean charts are irrelevant" saga.

Anyway, why can't this group establish itself in Korea? I actually set the bar at a bottom 50 debut for them in Korea, and they couldn't reach it :meme-life-support:

  • They are different from the others YGE ggs which Korea loved. They debuted with Batter up which wasn't a really good song as debut so they already didn't have the YGE image, then they also didn't have the YGE sound people were expecting like the quality wasn't high even though I listen to batter up occasionally.

YGE doesn't know how to produce for minors groups like Treasure and Baemon, that's my opinion, their others groups were majority +18 with strong concepts so they matched YGE hip-hop image without looking "tacky" or "cringe" for Koreans.

Drip is a great song imo, but people are moving on quickly, if you don't impress them until your first cb then it'll be hard to keep the hype. And they are trying too hard to make Ahyeon baemon "face" and almost ignoring the others girls that also have the chance to idk go viral, become the stan attractor.

In the end they are the most talented YGE group, but with the worst music management as in choosing tts.

They will have plenty of chances to get a hit in Korea, but yeah, for now they are pretty much a nugu there.

  • YT music owns a larger share in SK than Melon so keep huffin on that copium y'all. Legacy charts.

Legacy charts but every group stan here goes crazy when their favorite act has a high MelOn debut, gets roof hits or gets All-Kills.

I'm not buying it. I see achievement posts all over AKP, X and reddit any time a group crushes it on MelOn.

On Korean sites, I see articles popping up every time an artist does big (or shit) numbers on MelOn

The ones coping are the ones downplaying the importance of Korean chart dominance :meme-mmm-tea:

And the Korean charts have historically been dominated by YG groups, more than any other company in K-Pop, so yeah, I think it's a valid talking point that BM can't pull any numbers there AT ALL.

They can't even pull Cherish numbers, and I think that was a relative flop compared to Magnetic.

  • Okay but in the same breathe kpop stans put so much weight in the kcharts that apparently BM are flops because they can't chart on melon, despite doing much better on YT than most top groups (I can post the ad free numbers again). If AKP wants to deem melon as the only measurement of success in SK then yes I'll concede babymonster are "flops" in SK, even though sheesh was top 10. But they are still bigger than groups like KIOF and Illit overall.

And yes I will be the first to make an achievement post if Drip starts climbing.

This isn't about those other groups. Kiss of Life is like the little engine that could. They started from a nugu label and escaped nugudom gradually with each release. Their path can't be compared to Babymonster, who are debuting from YG, the company known for their girl groups having explosive debuts and dominating the charts.

Their whole album failing to get a single song in the top 100 is frankly a big red flag. Their music, outside of Sheesh, isn't landing with the Korean public at all, and I'm just honestly surprised by it.

MEOVV had better charting more recently than BM.

It is surprising isn't it? Even without promotion Cherish managed to debut on the top 100 so yea I was surprised as well, since Drip is much more unanimously liked than Sheesh and it's not like they did anything to lose popularity since Sheesh.

Seems I will just need to keep pushing my YT music and Spotify agenda.

If people want my honest perspective, I legitimately looked at BABYMONSTER as the next girl group up for YG, expecting them to perform similarly to their predecessors. And as an obvious huge fan of another current generation group, I thought they may pull numbers comparable to them and make things interesting.

But they just really haven't made the splash I was expecting (neither did MEOVV to be fair).

Because of the YG girl group pedigree, my expectations for what a YG girl group does digitally are always through the roof. So yes, I am stunned when I see BM not charting on MelOn at all with a full album drop.

  • why are so many groups flopping on the kcharts? 5050, Illit, Ssera, BM, even KIOF? specially on melon? i think it's linked with the ceos arrest and what they did with their remaining entertainement agencies. basically they got rid of everything except melon i think.

and i also think they don't want to take any risks anymore and are probably stopping the payola / sajaegi stuff. the debut songs probably got a debut 'boost', but that's it. no more payola! and not just for hybe groups but for all.

the lesson i also learned from all the drama as i stated beforhand in another thread is that, reputation is everything for rookies. as we can see with both illit and BM. their agency's and producers reputation is in the gutter. it's totally ruined. obviously, it strongly reflects on the rookies.

ps: the only reason ssera and illit even charted in the top 100 is also probably linked to hybe streaming farms otherwise, neither group would have probably debuted in the top 100 like all the others. more so than the others actually.

  • It's definetly been very frustrating to watch Babymonster's journey so far. We gotta compare their impact with the previous groups under YGE and it'definetly underperforming worse than anyone could predict.

The way I see it, this is just the result of YG's bad management, as usual. But this time around the company outdone itself. YGE starved the fans the wrong way, the gap between their debut and the reality show was way too long, GP lost any interest and the same happened to iKon and I believe it happened with Treasure as well. And the Ahyeon lineup incident just rubbed the audience in the wrong way, it just showed YG's loose grip and got the company a even more 'disorganized' and 'careless' image.

Overall, BM just lost momentum. They've been losing momentum since the -180th day.

It also worries me the fact that this is their fisrt year of activities. Usually, YGE dungeons their acts after the 1st year. If that happens to BM, climbing that pit will be almost impossible, which is a shame. BM is amazing and YGE should just keep promoting them in every corner possible.

I agree their management stinks and about Ahyeon, dont get me wrong yes she is pretty but so are the others and they each have their own charms. They should be allowed to flourish. I think another issue is trying to make the hip-hop image out of minors its well kinda cringe.

Yeah, if they debuted with a song like Drip I'm sure they would be having more interest than now.

And yes, Asa and Ruka are really mentioned a lot even by Koreans, but everybody except Ahyeon is being pushed aside which is annoying imo. They all are talented enough to be the stan attractors.

  • They are a girl group. It's ridiculous to judge after less than a week. Especially for Baemon. People didn't believe sheesh would go well but didn't it rise? I'm not a fan of theirs but I'm laughing each time someone put that type of thread.

apparently someone provoked the creation of this thread, though not sure who :meme-side-eye:

  • lol wait when they start promotions. they might pull a sheesh later kind of like what happened with somi with dumb dumb and fast forward

They're not even in the top 100.

The, at this point, cliche line "just wait for them to promote" doesn't really apply here.

It will take a miraculous chart reversal for the song to even be a semi successful hit in Korea.

Plus that is the same line HYBE stans on Reddit gave me when I brought up ILLIT's underperformance, and 2 weeks later the song isn't exactly lighting up the charts.

Let's just call a spade a spade for once.

  • YG as a brand is no longer valid in Korea after the burning sun. All of the acts that did well under them in that period (BP, BB, AKMU) were from the fanbase that tehy already had.

None of their new acts is receiving any push due to this. They need to work the way up like normal company GG.

Because internationally, they have the fanbase associated with YG. In korea than fanbase is just dead so they need to gather their own from scratch.

    My two cents anyway.

  • you are right in some aspects

but they might with good promotions. Drip is a much better song than sheeh ( objectively speaking) and apparently some knetz like click clack. Two members are going to running men they might get people to at least check out drip out of curiosity. I bet most people don't know they released new music. I think with the right promotions they will do fine.

the big mistake was not to wait for Ahyeon to debut as a group and releasing batter up instead it seems like it was rushed and not well planned.

  • I think we can blame BP/YGE a bit for that. Because Blackpink still are not disbanded and gone, it's easy to look at BM as the "reserve team" YGE put on the field when Blackpink is takeing their long pause. If we compare with Blackpink, 2NE1 was gone when BP debuted and all attention could be on them.

Any maybe they just don't have the right personalty among the members, something that make people like them a bit extra. I feel they have more talent than BP, but I can't say I can really pick any member I like more or less among them. More members make it harder to pin down members compared to a 4 member group where it goes faster to know who is who.

  • Baemon international fan meeting was quite successful.I think they will grow on korean once their international popularity raised. Isn't that what happened with BP last time ? They score global first before hit success at home ?

BLACKPINK debuted with a Perfect All-Kill with Whistle.

It's literally the second biggest girl group debut in history

That's how high the bar was set.
