Turns out being directed to look like you're having the time of your life on stage (which is probably genuine and not fully acting) leaves a better impression on people than being directed to look like you've never experienced human emotion before, which was the case for most of aespa's career.

I think aespa members are phenomenal performers individually but as a group they just don't work well together

Let's not forget that Aespa debuted in a pandemic and didn't perform in front a a single live crowd for 1.5 years until Coachella.

Also, their concept at the time was not exactly conducive to winking and smiling throughout.

newjeans, although aespa improved too

I prefer Aespa’s music, so I’d rather watch them lip sync than New Jeans.

I also really liked their Drama performances.

NewJeans but I think the choreography they are given plays a huge role in this

100% newjeans has the better stage presence, just compare their lalapalooza stage with aespa coachella stage and you will see the clear difference! but I will say aespa has improved this year, especially winter bc she used to use a single robotic expression

thebadguy i am a big fan of Aespa but as much as i think NewJeans are pretty average skill wise i been saying their charisma is their saving grace, also in the first 1.5 years of their carreer aespa was forced to perform while showing no emotion which fucks their stage precence, once they were allowed to do facial expressions (spicy) they became so much better and i think NingNing is the best performer of them all, but if we are judging just in the first 1.5 years i am voting NewJeans

In my opinion, Hybe groups teach stage presence and stage facial expressions. So, as far as I have observed, they teach facial expressions as part of their choreography. Stage presence is definitely something that is developed and learned. People who do not have natural stage charisma can present themselves as having stage presence.

I voted for Aespa, but it's no surprise that Newjeans got the majority of votes, probably due to the dance synchronization and more fun expressions. But to me they seemed a bit boring to me, I compared it to the performance of this year's awards shows as the deciding factor. Aespa so much better now. In my opinion, Newjeans isn't among the groups that gave the most charismatic performances in the 4th generation. When live vocals come into play, aespa gives a more charismatic image. Newjeans songs are a bit boring to me because they lack vocal acrobatics. I also liked Aespa's all Drama stages this year.

NewJeans, but aespa is not bad. There are times their potential is not properly used by how SM articulate their performances.

I thought this was groups overall so I chose aespa, then I realised it was based on the videos linked and I changed my vote to newjeans.

NewJeans have more than just "fun and smiley" performances. There is barely a smile in any performance of Cookie, and they have the whimsical, nostalgic vibe of Ditto down perfectly, which also isn't a song with a "fun and smiley" texture to it. And that's not even mentioning Cool With You.

Plus NewJeans have the best dance breaks in the business, delivering both quality and quantity.

Stop trying to weaponized the Gods stage, which was designed to highlight League of Legends, the World Championships, the pro players and the lore of the franchise, not exclusively promote NewJeans.

Cool With You is also one of the performances that showcased their weakness. When it's not a "smiley" concept, their stage presence weakens a lot. Present day Aespa can perform a non-smiley concept way better than them.
