Kakao is reportedly considering the sale of SM Entertainment due to legal risks. While 2-3 companies have shown interest, the sale might significantly alter the direction of Kakao's global entertainment business, hence they are taking a cautious approach.
An industry source said, "There is a company willing to become the owner of SM by offering about 2.5 trillion won. Given Chairman Kim Beom-Soo's decision to focus on core businesses to transform the company's DNA into an AI firm, rapid changes in Kakao are expected."

Meh weren't they also planning to sell Starship? If its true it is likely Hybe will buy SM but I wouldn't count on it as SM artists are million sellers and that would make IVE the only million seller group in Kakao. I know Kakao is a tech company first and foremost, but it look so stupid to sell their only companies that sell millions while they keep companies of other groups that sell half of that at most.

With the ongoing trial against Kakao's chairman and CEOs for stock manipulation this seems like a possible way out that they're preparing if things don't go their way. As long as the trial drags on it's hurting their reputation as well, so maybe they'll try to come to an agreement through this.
Kakao also wants to go full in on AI so they'll need some investments for that as well which they can get through selling some assets. Kpop in the end might have felt too much of a distraction for them lol especially with growth stagnating

Hybe too busy beefing with local Korean gov like Disney does. Over BTS sculpture etc. They better be careful before they get humbled by the government. Government can be real fuckn petty. HYBE buying all these agencies up. Kakao got hit once with a monopoly law. HYBE will be staring down that barrel too and get both barrels on monopoly anti trust and be force separated into separate companies without their consent on who runs them. So they better tread lightly. Nobody not even hybe or BTS is above getting slapped. The only thing above the Korean government is Samsung because Samsung controls literally everything 🤣
