How come it's always SM Idols who become judges/MC's of survival shows?

  • Taeyeon in Queendom 2 and Queendom Puzzle

    Changmin and Yunho in Kingdom

BoA, Taeyong in Street Woman Fighter

BoA, Eunhyuk in Street Man Fighter

now Sooyoung in R U Next?

even in the past when there were more then Taemin was in The Unit

also remind me wasn't BoA also MC in Produce?

ah and she now is MC of K-909 altought this one ain't competition, it's more like Yoo Hee Yeol's Sketchbook

    like how?

  • SM seems like a company that provides more individual oportunities, they managed SNSD so well that a big group is known as a whole. And most of the mentioned idols are 2nd gen, SM dominated 2nd gen lol Taeyong was the only without a legendary status when he was a judge, so SM connections helps a lot too (that's why they're so good at blacklisting idols :pepeshut: ).

  • the answer is just this and that's all.

Privilege the same way the girl from NJ got to sing the Disney song.

Well, I don't think anybody would question SNSD girls, BoA, Super Junior, Shinee members or TVXQ as judges/mentors, their resume is too good and they're legendary idols always mentioned as role models. If they aren't qualified as judges, then who are?

For Street Woman Fighter or Street Man Fighter I do think no one in kpop is qualified, the contestants have better dance resumes than them, most kpop dancers wouldn't even be good enough to be contestants. :pepe-legs:

  • SNSD are the gods of idols for a reason.

Taeyeon been host for mnet shows

    Tiffany for produce

    Yuri for my teen girl

Hyoyeon a judge on various dancing shows

    Sooyoung for Hybe

They have massive respect and impact on the industry including creating new idols and groups.

  • The street are saying mnet is trying to get Key to MC street women fighter 2

It's the connections of SM that give them the place nothing else, it's not about talent. When you join a big company their connections give you access to a lot of things that others don't. Talented people there are plenty everywhere. You want proof ? Look at park bom, CL ex YG career right now, look at Fx Luna career right now. They suddenly lost their talents when they left YG and SM?

  • SM was much more dominant in earlier gens, so that many famous idols who have now reached the age where they can be respectable judges that are clearly older than all participants (say: above 30) are from SM.

Once 3rd gen has aged and stopped being active in their group, expect BTS, Twice, BP, MAMAMOO members etc to also be asked for these kind of things.

I never said it was solely based in talent, actually, in my first comment I mentioned popularity and connections, the two os them. Sm provides more longevity to their idols (with the price of a slave contract :skull: ), so while 2ne1 was popular back then, their brand power isn't near SNSD members, so it makes sense SNSD members are the choice for judge/mentor gigs. I don't see trainees mentioning 2ne1 as their role models as much as I see them mentioning SNSD.

  • Some of you are pointing that Super Junior, TVXQ or BoA are there for accolades yeah I agree to that but... I don't think any of them attracts and brings extra viewers.

Taeyeon of course is different. It was same when Lisa was in Youth with You.

With MTG and Boys edition most clips which went viral were also with Soyeon...

This is why I've asked it as well... Let's be honest more people would tune in for mentor Nayeon or mentor Bang Chan...

Not to mention what would happen if someone from HYBE like V, RM or Mingyu be a mentor/judge or MC.

At some point even Knetz will point out that at least for males SM is sending remnants from the past. Same with BoA. K-909 was supposed to like weekly/seasonal music TV Show on JTBC but it ain't working as much as it would if MC would be someone popular from 3rd gen or early 4th gen.

SM Octopus should end soon tho. Unless they will cook MC Karina somewhere.

  • when the show gathers a lot of attention and they are judges, not just mc, the reception doesn't seem good. A very know example its boa

No idol would be respected as a SMF/SWF judge. Shownu is being hated because he was casted for the new season, and I can't think of an idol whose resume can compare to the best SWF/SMF dancers.

Tbh those aren’t really great examples because even while part of their labels none of them really had many side gigs outside music.

2ne1 barely ever appeared on tv or interacted with other idols so none of them built a name for themselves. Bom only significant TV appearance was for Queendom which was waaaay after she debuted. CL did even less. Dara had some gigs here and there but nothing to the the level most other idols including form smaller companies were doing. Minzy had nothing and a reason why she left. Ironically after leaving YG Minzy has been on tv the most of any member.

Fx Luna had the least jobs in fx while others were acting or going on shows. Once fx was over she didn’t have anything to fall back on.
